Here we are!

Roll up and sign in!

Oldies welcome, newbies welcome, anyone welcome!

It's basically a "what happened in church/spiritual life/anything else you want to chat about that's vaguely related (or not) to churchy stuff.

blackeyedsusan · 27/04/2011 18:00

ah, you have found the words to describe the songs i meant.. not enough sleep dealing with tummy aches, (terrified i was going to have to clear up sick) to coherant be [cgrin]

thanksamillion · 27/04/2011 18:38

Makes a lot of sense MHD. In fact just got back from church and 'lament' sums up the hymns we had this evening very well. In fact at lot that the church here uses are laments, apparently because a lot of them were written by the Christians who were in exile in Siberia. I don't always understand all the words Blush but they are very moving.

MadHairbaaadonroyalweddingDay · 27/04/2011 19:07

Sounds good milly. I think the lament songs should be used more than they are. Songwriters are keying into this more now. 'Blessed Be your name' by Matt Redman kind of led songs into a new era - more real perhaps? Loving it. Any links to those songs at all milly?

nickelbabe · 28/04/2011 10:00

Will catch up in a minute.

I want to express my OUTRAGE
[cangry][cangry][cangry][cangry][cangry][cangry] [cangry][cangry][cangry][cangry] [cangry][cangry][cangry] [cangry][cangry][cangry] [cangry][cangry][cangry][cangry] [cangry][cangry][cangry][cangry] [cangry][cangry][cangry]

They've chosen their hymns.

Guide me o thou Great Redeemer
Love Divine all loves excelling
Jerusalem.

The only one that's appropriate for a wedding is Love Divine !!!!!!!
Guide me - chosen because f the Welsh connection i bet? They couldn't think of anything else that was welsh? couldn't have thought "oh, we'll have the choir sing something in Welsh? No, they shoose the most overused and apparently only welsh tune in the history of the universe. How to tar a people with the same brush. talk about asweeping generalization. If I were Welsh, I'd be offended by the lack of imagination and the stereotyping... Hmm
and F*ing Jerusalem ??????
not even an effing hymn!
It's a blinding piece of music, granted, set to a poem that satirizes and critcizes the English condition - that says "we've done some horrid shit things to our people, but ooh, we're doing it in the name of God, so it's all okay!" -that was William Blake's intention.
It is not a hymn or a song of worship, and should never have been allowed to be used in churches full stop.

(it would have been more appropriate to use All things bright and beautiful and left the Rich man/poor man verse in Shock)

Now, what does that mean for future weddings in churches?
we'll be stuck with the same CRAP for AT LEAST 10 YEARS !!!!

No imagination.
even if they'd just used Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard, they'd have had over 500 hymns to choose from! Most of which are better and more suited to weddings than those they've chosen.
and i bet they didn't even chosoe them, i bet they just went "well, what does everyone else have?"
Feel sorry for their choir. same durge over and over again - they'll be jaded and cynical before their voices even break. [csad]
It proves that they're not church goers, that they have no respect for the church, that they probably don't even care about God.

It's hypocritical - this is the man who will swear to be "defender of the faith" when he's crowned King, and he has no desire to uphold that part.

How many wonderful hymns could they have had?!!!
I've got my hymn book open on "let all the world in every corner sing" at the moment - that would have been nice.
O Perfect Love
OPraise ye the Lord
O worship the king
praise my sould the king of heaven
all my hope on god is founded
Immortal invisible
The church's one foundation
Christ is our corner stone
Now thank we all our god

that's just off the top f my bloody head!!!!
they could have done so much better.

Fail.

Morons.

nickelbabe · 28/04/2011 10:09

(i put all my Hope on those hymn choices - It was supposed to make weddings more bearable for the next few years - now it'll be more of the same over and over again [csad]SadSad )

The top list of hymns chosen at weddings these days (based on my experience and looking at wedding websites for the shite they choose- in no particular order)
All things bright and beautiful
morning has broken
Lord of the dance
Jerusalem
Guide me o thou great redeemer
Give me joy in my heart
one more step along the world i go
love divine
make me a channel of your peace

but it's usually the firt three in our church :(

MaryBS · 28/04/2011 11:20

They probably picked ones they thought most people would know. Is it definitely Jerusalem or is it that Wedding hymn to the tune of Jerusalem?

I agree though, very unoriginal.

nickelbabe · 28/04/2011 11:22

But there are soooo many other hymns that people will know!! And they'll have a choir so it won't matter if people don't sing!
we had 4 hymns at our wedding, a church full of people who don't go to church (at least half of them don't go regularly, or hadn't been since childhood) and most of them sang!

They said on the news Jerusalem - they didn't qualify with anything else, so I assume it means the proper one. :(

MaryBS · 28/04/2011 11:32

I picked hymns both DH and I liked, and refused to pick ones just because people would know them. . We had the choir as well. Apparently I made the vicar laugh with my joining in the hymn singing Blush

nickelbabe · 28/04/2011 11:38

yes, please tell what you had!
(mine are in the front of my memory!)

this is exactly the point ,isn't it!
we chose hymns on Merit - brilliant hymns that summed up the feelings, and had decent music to them - especially O Worshi pthe King, mainly chosen cos of the awesome descant! Grin

MaryBS · 28/04/2011 12:02

. The first was a concession to picking one the average nonchurchgoer would know. Not overly keen on the tune but the words are lovely...

Lord of all Hopefulness
Bind us together
O Lord all the world belongs to you

And the reading we had was 1 John 4:7-12

MadHairbaaadonroyalweddingDay · 28/04/2011 12:04

I agree nickel. I really can't stand Jerusalem and hate it when it gets in church. And did those feet? did they bollocks.

I'm quite fond of Guide me oh thou great redeemer though....

dh gets asked loads for Jerusalem, Lord of the dance, all things bright and Give me oil in my lamp

We had ahem quite a lot of songs at our wedding

Quite a few no on knew

We had:

And can it be
Shout to the Lord (My Jesus, My Saviour) (well it was the 90's)
He brought me to his Banqueting table (ditto)
I sing a simple song of love (arms of love)
Brother let me be your servant
Crown Him

know we had more but can't recall for now :)

MadHairbaaadonroyalweddingDay · 28/04/2011 12:06

oh yes we had 'It is the cry of my heart' anyone remember that one? loved it at the time [cgrin]

MaryBS · 28/04/2011 12:06

Wow, you had a lot of hymns, MHD!

MadHairbaaadonroyalweddingDay · 28/04/2011 12:09

Yep - it was a fabulous worship service, great band. I have it on CD somewhere, must dig it out sometime and have a nostalgia fest Grin

nickelbabe · 28/04/2011 12:15

I see, Mary.
never mind, it was a long time ago, when those hymns weren't overdone! Grin

there you go, MHD - they'll do!
I know it is the Cry of My heart, I think.

See, you had something imaginiative - chosen because they're good, not because people will know them!
We had loads of music, but only 4 hymns because we know how long it makes the service.
DH is quite proud of the fact we had our reception in the church - he said this mronign "yeah, and I bet they're not having a buffet after the service in Westminster Abbey!" Grin Bless him . (because we were lamenting the fact that they have proven themselves not to be church goers in this simple act)

We haven't got our service recorded at all - it was being videod, but the battery ran out and only saved the first20 mins or so (at least we got the vows)
and I was recording the sound on my mini-disc player,r but I think i put it in the wrong holes on the sound system control board, cos I got 2 hours of silence :(
and it was the las ttime we hada proper decent full choir, with loads of real voices, and we did O Thou the Central Orb, and we haven't got it. :( :( :(

MadHairbaaadonroyalweddingDay · 28/04/2011 12:28

Oh that's a shame nickel :(

We do have a video of the reception barn dance thing which is a bit of a hoot. We also had our reception in the church and it was awesome, people did it up so nicely for us, was better than any old impersonal hotel I reckon. Our service was quite long due to being a worship concert [cblush] but everyone seemed to love it, even the non churchy people had a lot of good to say (well they may just have been being nice but hey!)

Shame about Wills and Kate not being into church...doesn't seem so at all though does it. Church and state heads to the imminent split and all that.

nickelbabe · 28/04/2011 12:31

we had so many comments about the reception - everyone said how cool it was - I think mainly it was because they were allowed to get drunk in church Grin

that's the way the world is going - no one wants to be associated with the church anymore.
we're a dying breed. :(

nickelbabe · 28/04/2011 12:41

They chose Guide Me because it was the last hymn at Diana's funeral.
that's just sick, really really odd.
I can't believe they chose a hymn based on what was had at a funeral.
I can't understand it.
how on earth can they have a happy occasion with a hymn that was chosen for a sad occasion?
Confused

there's a website here listing all the hymns that the previous royal brides have had.
why couldn't they have done something like that???
"Lead Us, Heavenly Father, Lead Us"
"Praise My Soul, The King of Heaven."
"Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise"
etc

nickelbabe · 28/04/2011 12:43

she's walking into I Was Glad (parry)
and they're having Fantasia on Greensleeves.
and Prelude on Rhosymedre
Serenade for Strings in E minor Opus 20
The Courtly Dances By Benjamin Britten
etc

here's a list

thanksamillion · 28/04/2011 13:26

We started with Love Divine, then had Here is Love, erm.. and some others

nickelbabe · 28/04/2011 13:30
Grin
PandaG · 28/04/2011 13:32

Have just sat and read entire thread - hello to all, haven't been around on MN at all for Lent, and not much on the Prayer thread or ever on these I think - some of you may remember me I think.

I'm mostly a Happy Clappy I'm afraid Nickel - but I can sense the majesty and glory in well played classical music or a choral hymn too - the music for our Holy Week meditations had me in tears more than once.

I hate Jerusalem with a passion too!

thanksamillion · 28/04/2011 13:46

hello Panda - welcome!

OK have order of service now:
Love Divine
Here is Love
Amazing Grace
My Jesus, my Saviour
Take my Life and let it be.
Grin

MadHairbaaadonroyalweddingDay · 28/04/2011 14:00

Hi Panda :) I'm v impressed you've stayed off FB and MN for Lent. I have no such discipline Grin

nickelbabe · 28/04/2011 14:07
