Hi I am new to the thread. Only stumbled on mumsnet a few weeks ago, Was only looking for the Boden discount. Now completely addicted. Soooo Glad I have found you. Been looking for something like this for ages. Bible believing happy clappy christian who has been through my fair share of ups and downs.

PositiveAttitude · 24/04/2011 21:00

Welcome Ohhappyday Smile

MaryBS · 24/04/2011 21:56

Welcome OHD!

meant to come back and say Fernando Torres finally scored a goal for Chelsea yesterday! Did you see how happy he was? [bugrin]

CheerfulYank · 24/04/2011 22:25

Happy Easter everyone! :)

We didn't go to church (haven't found one we like yet) but spent the day with family.

I vow to go try the Lutheran Church in the next few weeks! :) I'm looking for something that is a bit modern but still traditional IYSWIM? I've gone to some of the big non denominational ones before with the cappuchino machines in the lobby, etc, and they're a bit too modern for me, but DH's very traditional church feels very stiff and formal and I don't get much out of it.

BetsyBoop · 24/04/2011 22:35

Sorry I've not been around much lately, life (and children...!) getting in the way ATM.
I will try & catch up with everyone's news at some point...

Just wanted to pop by & wish you all a Happy Easter :)

TryLikingClarity · 25/04/2011 18:42

Hello all :)

I am a MN regular, often found in AIBU or Feminism section, but I saw the post OHD did in Chat and she told me to follow her over here.

Not really sure what is thread is about, so will go back and read the OP and will most likely be back Grin

TryLikingClarity · 25/04/2011 18:44

Okay, have read OP and have something to add (I often have things to add to threads and discussions)

DH and I went for a lovely picnic today with our DS and the families of a local church which is at the tiny early stages of being planted in a nearby area to us. Is going to be such a blessing to the area, I have faith in it!

Exciting times :)

MHDateallthechocolate · 25/04/2011 19:17

Hi Clarity

Sounds exciting, especially as dh and I are moving in the summer to do the same thing - scary. Glad to hear things are going well, how have they started the process out of interest?

Had a lovely day, picnic with friends, chilling mainly. dc back to school tomorrow. I am very ready Grin

TryLikingClarity · 25/04/2011 20:00

MHD - I will private message you the details of the church, if you like? It has a website and info about the founders and things they are doing. I'm sure the leader would be happy to answer an email or a call about it if you had any questions.

Reply to me here to let me know if you want a PM.

blackeyedsusan · 25/04/2011 20:18

hello tlc... quite new to this thread too.. not had chance to read it all yet either.

thejaffacakesareonme · 25/04/2011 21:43

Hi tlc and ohd!

A belated happy Easter to everyone. We've been away at my parents house. Great to be away from home for a few days. Back to real life with a bump tomorrow.

MHDateallthechocolate · 25/04/2011 22:34

TLC, that would be great, thanks :)

nickelbaalamb · 26/04/2011 10:13

I like loud music, mhd!

I just like it loud on an organ sung loudly by a good choir Grin
which ours was - I was hoarse by the end of the service!

then we had to go to St Mary's in the evening, cos DH was playing for them.
I went along because I get bored at home on my own.
It was a good service there, but it didn't feel like church .
that's the weird thing about it - when I go, I usually enjoy myself, but i don't feel like i've been to a church service; it just feels like i've been to a church social event.

We had two of the same hymns - Jesus Christ is Risen today and Thine be the Glory, but he difference between them being played on a proper loud organ and being played on a digital piano - it's uncomparable - the organ sounds sooo much more overwhelming, exciting, triumphant, praising than the piano in a church that looks like a church hall.

We also did Ye CHoirs of New Jerusalem at St Michael's , which was fabby. Grin Not printed in the Hideous Book (that's Complete Anglican Hymns old and New to the newcomers - called Hideous Orange Book because it's very, very crap, and orange), but we sang the Alleluia, Amen at the end, which sounds just lovely. (and did as well)

blackeyedsusan
"stupid question nickel but why couldn't you put it down?"
no such thing as a stupid question Grin
the idea of holding the cross is that everyone takes turns holding it at the front of the church. You can't put it down because it has to be held at all times - there's nowhere to put it down, and it's symbolic, holding it. You can only give it up when someone comes to take it from you. I thought it was a bit mean of them to make a pregnant lady hold it for that long (it wasn't heavy, it was the standing that got me)

Mary - i weep every time that part is read. "please, sir, tell me where you have taken him so I can restore him" "Mary "Rabboni" Sad

I told DH about your sermon, and said it was that that gave Torres the chance to get his goal! Grin

Welcome to the thread ohhappyday :)
and Clarity
It's getting quite big on here now! GrinGrin

Got loads of video footage of services this weekend - I filmed the Good Friday service, and also the St Michael's Easter day service (that one was sound only- most of my videos will be sound only now, cos it's easier to place the camera to get everyone's voices without worrying what they all look like!)
so over the week/weeks to come, I will make some visuals and post them on YouTube for you all to see.
As Jesus Went to Calvary has had 57 viewings now, which is great! Shock
link for those who haven't seen it
(you have to hear it a couple of time as it's quite weird-sounding to start with, but it grows on you - I love it to bits now!)

Okay, that's the biggest update I've ever done!
Blush

MHDateallthechocolate · 26/04/2011 10:31

Nickel :) I do see where you're coming from re triumphant organ in lovely old church versus plinky old piano in effort church hall type place, I really do Grin I don't know what it is really. I just don't like the sound of an organ. I know - I'm wierd. In all preference I find hymns like 'Thine Be The Glory' most wonderful when done with a good band including keyboards, drums, guitars, bass, brass, woodwind and good singers, in a huge barn or some such Grin with 5,000 people. Oh yes, that would be New Wine :) Plinky piano in church hall I would agree a bit meh.

Morning all!

nickelbaalamb · 26/04/2011 10:39

to be fair, it's a digital piano and comes through the speakers Grin but it just lacks that umph .

I can imagine it to a full orchestra, like in the Albert Hall, but not a "praise band" [meh]
Grin

nickelbaalamb · 26/04/2011 10:40

(not necessarily in the Albert Hall - any big concert venue will be fine)

MHDateallthechocolate · 26/04/2011 10:43

Yes full orchestra would do it for me too :)

Digital pianos I like though - better than organs I'm afraid. Although it has to be a reasonable piano - some older ones are hopeless. We use one in our contemporary worship service which packs a lot of ooomph on it's own and with the guitar and bass and oboe it's fab, especially in the big old church :)

nickelbaalamb · 26/04/2011 10:58

yeah, that sounds okay.

they are not better than organs! and they're only as loud as the sound system! In St Mary's, it really hides away (the sound), and full-blast on the volume control doesn't help - it's fine when the singing group is on their own, but for a congregational hymn, it doesn't work. :(

St Mary's has an organ, not a great one, but an organ noetheless, and it hasn't been used for so long that DH wasn't sure if it would work properly. So he had a go with it before the service on Sunday. Most of it works okay, a couple of the stops don't. that's quite interesting, because it might mean that he can use it for congregational hymns (he has to get permission)
It didn't even sound much out of tune.

MHDateallthechocolate · 26/04/2011 11:29

That's a problem in our church too nickel, the sound system - for our contemporary service we borrow one from one of the other team churches - ours is hopeless and doesn't work at all, whereas the organ does a magnificent job really (will admit that even if not my preference) So yes in this case I'd agree organ better, but in my little world It's Not. Meh Grin

nickelbaalamb · 26/04/2011 11:30
Grin
nickelbaalamb · 26/04/2011 11:33
(tread carefully on this one cos DH played that for our wedding.... Wink )
MHDateallthechocolate · 26/04/2011 12:00

I do like that first one nickel sort of.....at least I understand its grandeur. Will that do? My puters not linking other linkys for now, will try later (it's something with me and youtube at the min, don't worry)

I had 'Arrival of the Queen of Sheba' and the other weddingy one at my wedding and loved them....so it's not all bad Grin (had lots of worship happy clappy ones in between though) Grin [bugrin]
