DO I COMPLAIN ABOUT WHAT I REGARD AS NEGLECT...OR NOT?

My neighbour has two guinea pigs living in a hutch in her garden. I am a guinea pig owner myself and hate to see any animal, especially guineas, being neglected. These two pigs are only about 6mths old. They're in a hutch which is, imo, too small. They rarely see the light of day due to a very soaked duvet cover being draped over their hutch - presumably to keep them warm/dry but considering the fact its soaked I hardly think it helps. About every 4 days the cover is lifted and then put back down again. Yesterday it was lifted and I noticed the pigs were both hanging off their water bottle and both hungrily eating from their bowl. I know that if the cover isn't lifted those pigs do not see a human hand. The neighbour rarely goes out into the garden unless it is to put her bin out and even then they get ignored.

I had to try and find an excuse to go into her garden today because I could see both the pigs were sat beside their empty bowl so I decided to put her wheelie bin back into her garden. I was horrified at what I saw...their hutch is a good two inches deep in soaked newspaper and absolutely littered with their waste. Their backsides are soaked and they looked so unhappy.

I gave the neighbour a bin liner full of lovely lush meadow hay only a couple of weeks ago and a big bag of food...she's a single Mum so I thought it'd help.

I went to her opened shed and found some hay which was wet thru (her shed roof leaks) but I put some in anyway and they demolished it. My DH re-felted her other shed roof so why on earth she leaves their food in a shed that leaks is beyond me. The garden is full with dog poo - she only picks the poo up when she cuts the grass - the grass is knee high and hasn't been cut since the Summer. The garden stinks. We have to sleep with our bedroom windows shut because it smells so bad.

So going back to the guineas...do I complain to the RSPCA or not? I don't want to fall out with her but surely this is neglect? She's just got two new kittens - to add to the two cats she already has - so I really don't think she gives a toss about the pigs. I'd gladly take them off her hands....but she'll probably say no....my DH has just said I shouldn't get involved but why doesn't she feed them? Laziness? Out of sight, out of mind? Makes me soooo angry.

Mine (I have 5) live indoors, they're cleaned out every other day, get given fresh hay and greens every day....these people should not have animals.

Vent over.

Hi Silver and thanks. Yes they're very happy - they've had their own Xmas dinner today, bar the spuds and turkey! And yes they're very cosy and warm - I've just put the heating on and they have got a lamp on next to their cage so they're happy! They had a story read to them last night by DD2 so goodness knows they know quite a bit about the Mr Men now! That combined with DD1 playing her Alexandra Burke CD on full blast in her room!!!

Happy Christmas to you too and to everyone who very kindly posted on this thread. Reading back I looked quite desperate for help/ideas/advice! I'm glad it came to a happy outcome too and made my Christmas. xx

THEY SQUEAK!!!!!!

I crept into the room this morning to open up curtains to let in the lovely warm Winter sun (DD2 already downstairs - they are in her room) and they both squeaked at me!!! RESULT!!!!

I have just cleaned them out and they're now tucking into a re-filled bowl of food and some fresh hay...and they're enjoying the very welcome sun too!

It's taken them a full week to learn to squeak again so now I know I have two happy pigs! Phew!!!

That is fab news. It is not possible for pigs to live with you and not be happy! I'm hoping those little non-squeaking pigs in the shed (on another thread) are now indoors.

My little pigs are so sociable and such lovely little things. They each had a full hour cuddle yesterday as they love them so much. During the week I make sure each of them has one cuddle a day (at least). After a while they started to chat to us and kiss us while being cuddled and hate being put back.

Hi silver...yes I did post on that other thread...I hope they've been brought indoors from the shed altho the MNr hasn't posted on it again since....I might just go back to it and bump it to see if she brought them in.

Our ice/snow has now gone - its just very wet and miserable here. I'm now dealing with a very hormonal DD1 who is not at all happy but that's another story!

Mine have been out for a cuddle this afternoon but boy piggy must have had enough as he bit me a few times.

Can they have spinach? I have a list but thought someone might know. TIA.

whispywhisp · 26/12/2009 19:17

Fab...I read somewhere that they can have spinach but in real moderation...ie a leaf at a time! I think it was known to cause too much wee and bladder problems!

Okay I will limit it.

Whispy - Just a thought.........
Im sure I read somewhere that you cant use paper for bedding as it will give the piggies paper cuts on their feet = ouch

Im glad your rescued piggies are happier now!
