DO I COMPLAIN ABOUT WHAT I REGARD AS NEGLECT...OR NOT?

My neighbour has two guinea pigs living in a hutch in her garden. I am a guinea pig owner myself and hate to see any animal, especially guineas, being neglected. These two pigs are only about 6mths old. They're in a hutch which is, imo, too small. They rarely see the light of day due to a very soaked duvet cover being draped over their hutch - presumably to keep them warm/dry but considering the fact its soaked I hardly think it helps. About every 4 days the cover is lifted and then put back down again. Yesterday it was lifted and I noticed the pigs were both hanging off their water bottle and both hungrily eating from their bowl. I know that if the cover isn't lifted those pigs do not see a human hand. The neighbour rarely goes out into the garden unless it is to put her bin out and even then they get ignored.

I had to try and find an excuse to go into her garden today because I could see both the pigs were sat beside their empty bowl so I decided to put her wheelie bin back into her garden. I was horrified at what I saw...their hutch is a good two inches deep in soaked newspaper and absolutely littered with their waste. Their backsides are soaked and they looked so unhappy.

I gave the neighbour a bin liner full of lovely lush meadow hay only a couple of weeks ago and a big bag of food...she's a single Mum so I thought it'd help.

I went to her opened shed and found some hay which was wet thru (her shed roof leaks) but I put some in anyway and they demolished it. My DH re-felted her other shed roof so why on earth she leaves their food in a shed that leaks is beyond me. The garden is full with dog poo - she only picks the poo up when she cuts the grass - the grass is knee high and hasn't been cut since the Summer. The garden stinks. We have to sleep with our bedroom windows shut because it smells so bad.

So going back to the guineas...do I complain to the RSPCA or not? I don't want to fall out with her but surely this is neglect? She's just got two new kittens - to add to the two cats she already has - so I really don't think she gives a toss about the pigs. I'd gladly take them off her hands....but she'll probably say no....my DH has just said I shouldn't get involved but why doesn't she feed them? Laziness? Out of sight, out of mind? Makes me soooo angry.

Mine (I have 5) live indoors, they're cleaned out every other day, get given fresh hay and greens every day....these people should not have animals.

Vent over.

Whispywhisp you are a star. You have made my christmas. I was so worried about those poor little piggies. I cannot imagine how you must have felt when you got them today. They must be so happy in the warm and being cared for by someone that loves them. xx

whispywhisp · 18/12/2009 15:04

I thought you'd be pleased silver!

Yes they seem happy. One of them has just ventured out to their food bowl but as soon as I called one of the kids to have a look and despite them creeping up on the cage they soon darted back to the corner of the cage again!

I know they're probably one of a few hundred hutched animals that are being neglected in cold dark gardens right now but I've done my bit for animal welfare today! Over the weekend I'm going to get them out, one at a time, and sit them on my lap to get them used to being handled. They're going to need quite a bit of work/fattening up/confidence building but with Christmas around the corner I'm not going anywhere now for the next couple of weeks (no school runs!) so they'll get all the time and attention they should've had for the last few months and what they deserve right now.

Oh Whispy. We have a spare 4ft hutch but are a bit far from you (far side of kent) otherwise you could have that. Ebay has some bargains if you search by distance in the drop-down box.
(where the 'ending soonest' etc is)
Mine are fairly timid after about 9 months here, which is a shame but it's because I never have time without ds2 around to hold them. They do squeak though and are far less skittish than they used to be. however, I always have to hold both at once, because if I take one out to hold the other one frets. They are very attached to each other - despite not being sisters!

Are these little guys neutered, does it make a difference behaviourally?

whispywhisp · 18/12/2009 16:25

Hi FA...I'm in Hants so yes, guess a bit too far!

Yes these are two boys...I've had boys before - I still have 3 males. I don't think neutering does help them and they certainly seem very close - they've spent the entire day snuggled up to each other. I've noticed if we leave them well alone they venture out and eat...if we go into the kitchen, where they are, they run back to their mound of hay they've built.

I've been trawling eBay all day. Ideally I'd like to get an indoor cage so I can keep them indoors for the Winter. I do have room to keep them indoors, just. There are some cages which are big enough on there but they're £40 and I simply don't have the spare cash atm. I do have a dog crate in the boot of my car which I could use, at a push, but its not ideal....

Yes mine love to hide as well...if there is the option of an igloo or a covered box they will take it except if they are out in the run, which they are every day in summer, and then they just go mad leaping around.
I had them on the sofa today and made them a little cushion hideaway, but they were so scared of ds2 they didn't come out at all.
i think I should have waited before getting them tbh, till he was a bit less shouty...

You could try freecycle I suppose. I might start a thread for you as well

silver73 · 18/12/2009 16:36

Hi Whispy

I'm trying to find out size of a cage and see if it is still available for these little gps. Are you a member of freecycle? I've seen hutches on there before now - sorry thinking ahead to the summer...

Those poor little things but at least they will soon know that they are safe and now they are being fed and kept warm and safe.

whispywhisp · 18/12/2009 16:52

Yep I've been doing the Freecycle rounds too! There's a couple of hutches on there but its a cage I'm ideally after. I've put on a 'wanted' request to see if anyone has one they don't want.

Three cheers for Whispy.

I am trying to persuade DH to go and buy an indoor hutch for my 2 but it is too icy for him to drive. Don't know what I will do tonight with them . They are in a box in the lounge atm.

Flightattendant · 18/12/2009 17:04

Local paper ads are often full of hutches and so on. Worth a shot maybe.

FabIsGettingReadyForXmas · 18/12/2009 17:08

I will look on line as we can't get out atm. Thanks.

nappyzonecantrunfortoffee · 18/12/2009 17:38

Well doen whispy

silver73 · 18/12/2009 17:59

Whispy what is the minimum size they need for an indoor cage?

Earthstar · 18/12/2009 18:10

do you have a paypal account - I could donate something towards a cage?

silver73 · 18/12/2009 18:11

That is a fab idea - I'd like to too.

whispywhisp · 18/12/2009 18:44

How kind! No, that's ok...I'll find one somewhere!!! To buy a new one off ebay is about £30 plus about a tenner for p&p. I can't justify spending that at the moment. DH would have a fit! The cages I have for my own pigs are about a metre long....that'd do for these two pigs I think.

I will keep trawling thru.....

But thank you for the offer of clubbing together...that is soooo kind but I couldn't ask you lot to do that...just having you on here for me to vent/off-load has been great...guinea pigs are such lovely creatures and it broke my heart to see them so badly neglected....I looked out about 2am this morning and they looked so miserable...I put our outside light on and could see them - they had no cover and no protection from the wind which was extremely cold. DH said to me tonight 'atleast by us having them you'll stop worrying about them...and nagging at me to help you should you report her and get some flack for it!'

I love all animals...but especially guinea pigs.

Well done whispy You did a great deed!

I have a grids and corex cage as shown on this site for our two - grids £26 corex £12 plus fleece blankets and old towels - much cheaper than a commercial cage and more space for the piggies

minimum cage sizes

Ours is just like the picture on the top left of the screen - click on the photo galleries and you can see loads more!

Earthstar · 18/12/2009 19:21

Aww wispy you didn't ask us to club together - we offered - that's different! Why not? Change your mind

whispywhisp · 18/12/2009 20:46

Earthstar...cos reading back it looks like I was begging for some help and I'm worried it came across like that!!!

I just mentioned to DH what you and silver had put about helping out with the cost of a cage and his reply was 'wow' !! He agrees they need something bigger but has told me we can't afford it! He's right. We are pretty skint, as usual! He then said he'd trying making something for them - he wouldn't usually suggest this but I think he also felt pretty sorry for them being stuck outside...but it'll take him a month of Sundays to design something let alone build it...especially as he usually does a 12hr day at work!

I'm so glad I've got them indoors. I've just been out to check on a neighbour's house (I'm house-sitting for someone else too!) and she only lives 3 doors from me...not only is it slippery out there it is absolutely freezing.....I'm certain these pigs would've struggled out there tonight.

Earthstar · 18/12/2009 21:14

Wisp of course it doesn't seem like a beg! I can't have pets - dd would love one though - so it would be lovely for us to be able to help a poor wee pet at cHristmas, that's my take on it!

FabIsGettingReadyForXmas · 18/12/2009 21:15

My piggies are in the cat's carry case for the night. Couldn't bear to think of them out in the snow. We have loads.

whispywhisp · 18/12/2009 21:21

Earthstar...well, I don't know what to say other than I'd be a complete idiot if I didn't accept your extremely kind offer.....yes that would be absolutely wonderful - any donation would be very VERY gratefully received...it'd mean I could try and get a decent cage for them.

My email/paypal is [email protected]

...I still feel really guilty taking anything though....it was my choice to take these pigs but I was just so desperate to get them in out of the cold I hadn't really given much thought to their living accommodation!

THANK YOU

Fab - snow? Where abouts are you?

We still have the same snow we had overnight which has now iced over...I'm so glad its the weekend and DH not at work for a couple of days - he went to Wales today and they had none at all! It is horrible out there tonight.
