DO I COMPLAIN ABOUT WHAT I REGARD AS NEGLECT...OR NOT?

My neighbour has two guinea pigs living in a hutch in her garden. I am a guinea pig owner myself and hate to see any animal, especially guineas, being neglected. These two pigs are only about 6mths old. They're in a hutch which is, imo, too small. They rarely see the light of day due to a very soaked duvet cover being draped over their hutch - presumably to keep them warm/dry but considering the fact its soaked I hardly think it helps. About every 4 days the cover is lifted and then put back down again. Yesterday it was lifted and I noticed the pigs were both hanging off their water bottle and both hungrily eating from their bowl. I know that if the cover isn't lifted those pigs do not see a human hand. The neighbour rarely goes out into the garden unless it is to put her bin out and even then they get ignored.

I had to try and find an excuse to go into her garden today because I could see both the pigs were sat beside their empty bowl so I decided to put her wheelie bin back into her garden. I was horrified at what I saw...their hutch is a good two inches deep in soaked newspaper and absolutely littered with their waste. Their backsides are soaked and they looked so unhappy.

I gave the neighbour a bin liner full of lovely lush meadow hay only a couple of weeks ago and a big bag of food...she's a single Mum so I thought it'd help.

I went to her opened shed and found some hay which was wet thru (her shed roof leaks) but I put some in anyway and they demolished it. My DH re-felted her other shed roof so why on earth she leaves their food in a shed that leaks is beyond me. The garden is full with dog poo - she only picks the poo up when she cuts the grass - the grass is knee high and hasn't been cut since the Summer. The garden stinks. We have to sleep with our bedroom windows shut because it smells so bad.

So going back to the guineas...do I complain to the RSPCA or not? I don't want to fall out with her but surely this is neglect? She's just got two new kittens - to add to the two cats she already has - so I really don't think she gives a toss about the pigs. I'd gladly take them off her hands....but she'll probably say no....my DH has just said I shouldn't get involved but why doesn't she feed them? Laziness? Out of sight, out of mind? Makes me soooo angry.

Mine (I have 5) live indoors, they're cleaned out every other day, get given fresh hay and greens every day....these people should not have animals.

Vent over.

It has just stopped snowing now but was coming down really fast. I can't settle until he is home.

whispywhisp · 21/12/2009 17:28

Still really heavy here. Just spoken to DH. He's stuck. He's only about half an hour away from here but has done 200yrds in just under 1hr. Fortunately he has plenty of diesel and has a hot flask of tea with him. He's so frustrated tho. He can't think of an alternative route home that takes him along treated salted roads or roads without hills that he know he won't get up. He doesn't think he'll get home much before about 8pm at this rate.

I hate it when we have weather like this. I'm always so glad to see his car pull up outside. I've just watched a transit van trying to get up the hill we live on....he gave up in the end for slipping around everywhere.

Problem here is we've got a good few inches of fresh snow which has fallen on the solid/iced over stuff that we had fall a couple of days ago which hasn't thawed....treacherous!

Anyway....I'm warm, the kids are warm, the pigs are cosy, the cat is out (must go get her in) and the dog is sat in her bed with a bone!

My cat is curled up next to me sleeping.

The kids have been sent upstairs in disgrace.

The piggies are sad and their newspaper is wet so I am just thinking where I can put them to have a play. Not allowed to let them run around in the kitchen.

FabIsGettingReadyForXmas · 21/12/2009 18:24

Piggies are now settled in their new house but we can't seem to fit the hay rack as per shown on the website.

whispywhisp · 22/12/2009 08:52

Fab...I'm just going to have a look at the PAH website and look at the hay rack so give me a min....

Thanks

DS1 says we need to attach it on the outside and I think he might be right.

whispywhisp · 22/12/2009 08:54

FAB...You know the rack fits on the OUTSIDE of the hutch? It clips on and you fill it with hay for them to pull through the bars...it doesn't clip on the inside of the hutch.

Thank you

Have to go out now, chat later. :

whispywhisp · 22/12/2009 08:57

If you clip it to the inside they'd not be able to get the hay out! Plus it'd take up valuable room in the cage!!! I personally find them a nuisance to use cos they drop a lot of hay onto the floor and when I used them I was forever picking up the hay..I use the hanging metal balls instead - you can hang that down from the centre of the cage and it encourages them to stand up on their back legs to get the hay, clinging on to the ball with their front feet..they're really cheap to buy - only a few quid and if you get the one with the bell on they love it!

That's ok fab! I've got to go anyway...DH has gone out to help a guy get his car out of the snow....we've got thick snow and its so icy underneath and now the freezing fog is coming in. It took DH 4hrs to drive just 20 miles last night.

GOOD NEWS!!!!

Bingo and Bob are mine permanently!!!!

I spoke to the daughter from next door this morning...she agreed they were better off with us and her response was...'atleast they won't die if they're with you'....

Yes but also atleast they will get cleaned out, fed, watered and tlc...she failed to remember all that too!

Anyway I'm very happy, relieved and can now enjoy being a guinea pig owner of 7 pigs!!! Yikes!

Merry Christmas Bingo and Bob!!

I have a metal ball and bell so will use that for the hay.

whispywhisp · 22/12/2009 12:02

Thank you toughasoldboots...I'm glad too. I didn't think it'd take much to convince them nextdoor they were better off with me. Bingo and Bob are now being included in a tea-party being acted out by my 6yr old! They're being asked what they want (she has a menu!) and so far they've chosen a muffin and coffee!

Fab - I'm glad you got the ball thingy! They'll love using that. It's as much a toy as a hay holder! My lot love them. Bingo and Bob have sussed it out too and aren't quite so scared of the bell now!

I'm hoping their new cage will turn up today.....

Fab - have yours settled into their cage ok? Bet they love it?!

Mine have ignored the ball mostly outside as the bell scared them. They also don't have a clue what any of their chew toys are for. I am getting them out for a cuddle later as they are hiding at the moment.

whispywhisp · 22/12/2009 16:25

Fab - hows yours getting on with that ball? Have they worked it out yet?

OP posts:
FabIsGettingReadyForXmas · 22/12/2009 16:27

When it was on their hutch they did manage to get the food out but nothing yet now it is inside. They are squeaking but I haven't seen them both out in the main part together yet. Hopefully they will come out later when the kids are in bed it is quieter. We have had them since Sept and they are still really jumpy. Need to spend more time holding them and less time cooking.

ilovesprouts · 22/12/2009 16:43

awwh glad they are yours now !!

whispywhisp · 22/12/2009 18:34

Yep lets hope if its quieter this evening your pigs will venture out a bit more fab....

Yes thanks sprouts - I'm glad too...they're currently tucking into slices of cucumber mixed in with slices of carrot....I've just given them a large cardboard roll - quite a large diameter roll which they're having a good sniff at and taking turns running through!

They now have their new cage (thanks again silver and earthstar!)....it is a lovely cage - really sturdy and quite heavy so they're happy!

FabIsGettingReadyForXmas · 22/12/2009 19:03

Just spent ages sat by the cage, nothing.

Sat down to MN and they are both out to grab some food .

FabIsGettingReadyForXmas · 22/12/2009 19:11

Girl piggy was just shouting at boy piggy.

How can you tell if they are happy squeals/squeaks or not?

FabIsGettingReadyForXmas · 22/12/2009 20:06

I think one of them has a cough.

silver73 · 22/12/2009 20:57

Hi Whispy that is absolutely fab news that you can keep those little piggies! And great news about the cage. Those pigs are so lucky to have you. Loved hearing about the piggie tea party your daughter had - she sounds lovely x

whispywhisp · 23/12/2009 10:03

FAB....a guinea coughing is absolutely perfectly normal....mine do it all the time and normally its when they're eating....DO NOT WORRY!!!!! It may sound horrible but providing their eyes are clear and there is nothing coming from their nose you have nothing to worry about.
