DO I COMPLAIN ABOUT WHAT I REGARD AS NEGLECT...OR NOT?

My neighbour has two guinea pigs living in a hutch in her garden. I am a guinea pig owner myself and hate to see any animal, especially guineas, being neglected. These two pigs are only about 6mths old. They're in a hutch which is, imo, too small. They rarely see the light of day due to a very soaked duvet cover being draped over their hutch - presumably to keep them warm/dry but considering the fact its soaked I hardly think it helps. About every 4 days the cover is lifted and then put back down again. Yesterday it was lifted and I noticed the pigs were both hanging off their water bottle and both hungrily eating from their bowl. I know that if the cover isn't lifted those pigs do not see a human hand. The neighbour rarely goes out into the garden unless it is to put her bin out and even then they get ignored.

I had to try and find an excuse to go into her garden today because I could see both the pigs were sat beside their empty bowl so I decided to put her wheelie bin back into her garden. I was horrified at what I saw...their hutch is a good two inches deep in soaked newspaper and absolutely littered with their waste. Their backsides are soaked and they looked so unhappy.

I gave the neighbour a bin liner full of lovely lush meadow hay only a couple of weeks ago and a big bag of food...she's a single Mum so I thought it'd help.

I went to her opened shed and found some hay which was wet thru (her shed roof leaks) but I put some in anyway and they demolished it. My DH re-felted her other shed roof so why on earth she leaves their food in a shed that leaks is beyond me. The garden is full with dog poo - she only picks the poo up when she cuts the grass - the grass is knee high and hasn't been cut since the Summer. The garden stinks. We have to sleep with our bedroom windows shut because it smells so bad.

So going back to the guineas...do I complain to the RSPCA or not? I don't want to fall out with her but surely this is neglect? She's just got two new kittens - to add to the two cats she already has - so I really don't think she gives a toss about the pigs. I'd gladly take them off her hands....but she'll probably say no....my DH has just said I shouldn't get involved but why doesn't she feed them? Laziness? Out of sight, out of mind? Makes me soooo angry.

Mine (I have 5) live indoors, they're cleaned out every other day, get given fresh hay and greens every day....these people should not have animals.

Vent over.

Hi silver...yes my kids are a bit daft at times! My eldest is almost 11 (just after Xmas) and she's a very grown up girl - into make-up/hair etc etc....whereas my younger one (almost 6) loves tea-parties/playing schools etc so my elder one is often dragged into a tea party...and they were both playing parties yesterday and the pigs were being asked what they want for tea!

They've settled into their new cage really well...its a lovely cage....I checked them late last night and pulled out Bingo, the darker more timid one, and held him up to the window and showed him what he'd have been living in (it was freezing fog and extremely cold/icy/snowy) and he gave a little squeak as if to say thank you!

My DH thinks I'm completely mad...I guess I am!?!

They're still eating so much food - I filled their bowl up to the brim last night when I cleaned them out. It was empty again this morning. Everything I give them they eat. Their favourite has to be apple although it still takes them a good few minutes to find the confidence to come and get it before they drag back into their mound of hay they've built - bit like a nest.

They are lovely pigs. They just needs loads of handling. I can feel their tummys are getting bigger now which is great cos they were quite skinny when I took them on. I do feel quite proud of myself for what I did and I'm pleased I can now keep them. I just hope my neighbours aren't stupid enough to go and get any more next year....

Thanks for that whispy. I have been worried. I thought they were choking.

I haven't seen girl piggie yet today, maybe she wants to hide from boy piggy.

whispywhisp · 23/12/2009 12:08

Fab - yes it sounds horrible doesn't it? There is no need to worry though. It's very normal.

You have a girl and a boy in together?!!!

OP posts:
FabIsGettingReadyForXmas · 23/12/2009 12:13

Yes but the boy was done before we got him from the rescue place. One was abandoned in a cardboard box and the other was taken from a woman who had 42 and wasn't looking after them properly.

I am cleaning them out once the kids have gone to my PILS. Could they run around in a laundry basket for a few minutes or is the cardboard box better?

whispywhisp · 23/12/2009 13:01

I'd say laundry basket would be better...easier to wipe up wee's!!!

Phew!!! re the boy/girl thing! I thought we were gonna have pig-babies to deal with next!!!

OP posts:
whispywhisp · 23/12/2009 13:02

How are they getting on with the hay ball btw?

OP posts:
whispywhisp · 23/12/2009 13:04

silver - I thought you'd be happy I'm keeping Bingo and Bob! You can stop worrying now!!! Just got to try and convince DH to give the girl next door some cash in recompense for them...he says we shouldn't cos if it hadn't have been for us..blah blah but they could easily have demanded them back and whilst I'd have fought it I know I'd have had to give them back...he says we're too heavily overdrawn to even consider giving her a fiver atm....so I will tell her she'll have to wait till the New Year...he has no time for 'them' next door....he can't stand them tbh.

all this talk of piggies are making me miss mine all the more one died in the summer and one in the autumn. the second one just missed his brother too much and stopped talking and just seemed depressed.

my bunny is in the shed, all warm and dry.

whispywhisp · 23/12/2009 13:33

misdee...get some more!!!! There's load that need homes...I was shocked when I looked on our local freeads website..the amount of cages for sale (I was trying to get one) that came with their contents too...guineas/rabbits ...because 'the children have lost interest' etc etc..

OP posts:
misdee · 23/12/2009 13:40

i cant i would prefer them to be indoor pets, and due to all the kids combined allergies and dh immune suppression, they would have to be outside ones again, and i dont want that

whispywhisp · 23/12/2009 13:46

Oh dear, that's a shame. All mine live indoors. I hate the cold myself so can't imagine animals having to live out there too.

FabIsGettingReadyForXmas · 23/12/2009 15:31

Just got home and there was some high pitched squeaking from the piggies. Are the y happy to have me home? I just went to see if they had had any hay from the ball and girl piggy ran and hid. Daft sausage. Boy piggy was pulling at it earlier, I think they might be still scared of the bells.

misdee · 23/12/2009 15:34

so would i.

if the kids didnt have allergies mny house would be a zoo. when i'm out delivery my books, there is a stray cat (not stray as completly stray, but belongs to everyone in one street who keeps following me home, well the lady who mainly cares for him, said if i wanted to envcourage him to stay at mine, then feel free (he is registered to her, as she sorted out medical treatment for him, but doesnt belong to her iyswim). and i would love to do that as he is a friendly cat, and dd1 loves him as well, but she has a lajor cat allergy so will make do with adding some care for him, and offering hi ma dry place in the shed as well.

whispywhisp · 23/12/2009 18:12

I've often said if I wasn't married, didn't have kids etc etc...I'd have a cottage by the sea surrounded by rescue animals....

Having 7 pigs, a dog and a cat plus 2 kids and a DH is enough for me although I'm sure I'd have even more animals if I had the room!

misdee....I would definitely feed the stray cat and give it somewhere warm/dry to live...we have a cat that lives a few doors up which isn't terribly friendly especially towards my own cat which has taken to sleeping on my back doorstep...I now leave a few biscuits out for it and I've left a cat basket tucked up under the patio table which has a towel in it to give it somewhere warm/dry to go to rather than a cold doorstep. No point talking to its owner cos he's usually asleep all day and out pubbing it during the night and normally high on something.

Fab - glad your pigs are now eating from the hay ball. As I'm sat typing this the bell on the boys ball is ringing so without looking round I can tell they're eating their hay! They've just had a bowl of cabbage, carrot and celery and pretty much all of it has gone! Guess they'll be looking for a pudding next!

FabIsGettingReadyForXmas · 23/12/2009 18:57

Mine started squeaking when daddy came home . I wish I knew what their squeaks meant. They were a bit surprised to be in the laundry basket while I cleaned them out but were okay tucking into their tea.

whispywhisp · 23/12/2009 19:09

Squeaks, imo, mean they're happy and content. I've got a book here somewhere about pigs...I'll go take a look!

When I'm chopping up veg, the rustle of a carrier bag or even me going to the fridge makes all mine squeak...one starts and they all start! It gets quite noisy in my kitchen sometimes!

FabIsGettingReadyForXmas · 23/12/2009 19:35

Girl piggy is having a drink and boy piggy is making a mess.. I know if I go over to them they will run and hide though. .

SimpleAsABC · 23/12/2009 19:43

Do gps cast their fur a lot?

I would love to have a wee pet, indoor, since i've moved into my flat but im allergic to cats and dogs?

Any ideas?

FabIsGettingReadyForXmas · 23/12/2009 19:48

My girl piggy loses a bit of hair at times but the boy doesn't. They are different breeds though.

And you will need to have at least 2 piggies.

SimpleAsABC · 23/12/2009 21:29

Could I have two boys?

What breed is yours?

I would deffo want to keep them inside. Are they smelly?? Obviously I would clean them regularly but just wondered honestly whether or not they are "odourous" little creatures?

FabIsGettingReadyForXmas · 24/12/2009 07:34

The piggies don't smell. There wee does.

I think you could have 2 boys.

One of mine has short hair and the other is an abersynian?? I think.

whispywhisp · 24/12/2009 08:56

ABC - Fab is right, the pigs never smell - they're really clean little creatures actually. It's their wee/poo that gets a bit honky!...so they need regular cleaning out if kept indoors especially. As regards fur - depends on what type of pig you get - I had a rough coated pig once - he never shed any fur - I have two long-haired pigs and yes they do shed their fur but hardly anything - you might get the odd hair here and there but they don't lose it as much as a dog would.

I have two girls together and two boys together. The girls are related - mum and daughter (mum had her daughter when she was just 4 mths old...then returned to PAH as unwanted so I ended up with her) - the boys aren't (Bingo and Bob - the ones I rescued on this thread)....

I was told many years ago that girls are fine living together but live happily if related whereas boys don't seem to mind. I agree pigs should be kept in numbers but then again I have three that live on their own and they live happily too but I do get them out a fair bit for a run around/cuddles and they live in the kitchen which is the busiest room in our house so they have plenty to watch/listen to.

FabIsSoExcitedAboutXmas · 24/12/2009 09:17

I just gave my piggies a big handful of grass as they haven't been able to have any for a few days and they wolfed it down. When I went over to them they were torn between stuffing their faces and running away to hide.

whispywhisp · 24/12/2009 09:53

Fab...I love watching them dive into their food! It's clean out day in this house today...I'm busily shredding newspaper for their bedding and they squeak when they hear the shredder running! I think they link the shredder running = fresh hay!

Hi Whispy

Merry Christmas. Just wanted to let you know how wonderful it is that those little piggies are safe in your hands. My little pigs are absolutely adored and so doted on. It is lovely watching them all warm and content tonight and knowing that those two little pigs that you rescued are living the same life now thanks to you xx
