DO I COMPLAIN ABOUT WHAT I REGARD AS NEGLECT...OR NOT?

My neighbour has two guinea pigs living in a hutch in her garden. I am a guinea pig owner myself and hate to see any animal, especially guineas, being neglected. These two pigs are only about 6mths old. They're in a hutch which is, imo, too small. They rarely see the light of day due to a very soaked duvet cover being draped over their hutch - presumably to keep them warm/dry but considering the fact its soaked I hardly think it helps. About every 4 days the cover is lifted and then put back down again. Yesterday it was lifted and I noticed the pigs were both hanging off their water bottle and both hungrily eating from their bowl. I know that if the cover isn't lifted those pigs do not see a human hand. The neighbour rarely goes out into the garden unless it is to put her bin out and even then they get ignored.

I had to try and find an excuse to go into her garden today because I could see both the pigs were sat beside their empty bowl so I decided to put her wheelie bin back into her garden. I was horrified at what I saw...their hutch is a good two inches deep in soaked newspaper and absolutely littered with their waste. Their backsides are soaked and they looked so unhappy.

I gave the neighbour a bin liner full of lovely lush meadow hay only a couple of weeks ago and a big bag of food...she's a single Mum so I thought it'd help.

I went to her opened shed and found some hay which was wet thru (her shed roof leaks) but I put some in anyway and they demolished it. My DH re-felted her other shed roof so why on earth she leaves their food in a shed that leaks is beyond me. The garden is full with dog poo - she only picks the poo up when she cuts the grass - the grass is knee high and hasn't been cut since the Summer. The garden stinks. We have to sleep with our bedroom windows shut because it smells so bad.

So going back to the guineas...do I complain to the RSPCA or not? I don't want to fall out with her but surely this is neglect? She's just got two new kittens - to add to the two cats she already has - so I really don't think she gives a toss about the pigs. I'd gladly take them off her hands....but she'll probably say no....my DH has just said I shouldn't get involved but why doesn't she feed them? Laziness? Out of sight, out of mind? Makes me soooo angry.

Mine (I have 5) live indoors, they're cleaned out every other day, get given fresh hay and greens every day....these people should not have animals.

Vent over.

My stomach is still churning after seeing those dead maggots in their old hutch....yeuck. There is no way I can let them go back next door.....

Can't wait for the squeaks!
I love how you are giving them cabbage and fresh veg!

whispywhisp · 19/12/2009 19:49

earthstar...what you mean by putting it at the front of the cage? It's the only way I can think of which'll encourage them to come out of their mound of hay that they've built around them! I have noticed this evening that the darker one of the two is the most confident - he seems to put his nose in the air when someone walks past...as if he's checking them out!

I'm just trying to find a cage...I've found one on eBay but the guy has only just listed it and I'm asking him if he'll let me but it outright from him...I've pleaded my case with him...ie explained why I need it desperately and would he let me have it cheaply rather than the £50 that it is worth! My next task will be to go and pick it up from him - he's about 25 miles from me but fortunately with the kids now off school I should be able to go up in the week.

Omg just seen the bit about the m*ggots

Are they clean underneath, Whispy? just worrying in case piggies can get fly strike like rabbits.

Flightattendant · 19/12/2009 19:53

I'm sure you would have checked already - sorry.

whispywhisp · 19/12/2009 19:55

Yea they're fine. That was the first thing I did when I saw them in the hutch. From what I could tell the maggots were actually feeding (or rather had fed - they were dead) from the sodden wood of the hutch as opposed to their droppings. The pigs are still very skittish but I did check their backsides. I couldn't risk having maggot infested pigs indoors with my healthy 5 pigs.

Oh well done...thank Goodness for that though, it would have been awful

Poor wee things. Sounds as though they are really starting to feel at home.

whispywhisp · 19/12/2009 20:45

I've just been and checked their backsides again! Both are fine. They're much better at me picking them up now which is a relief although if one of the kids knocks the cage by accident they run around like crazy. I've just shared my apple with them - I gave them one chunk and they did tug-of-war with it.

No joy with the cage for them. I'm beginning to worry I won't get them anything now till after Christmas. I'd forgotten they are quite expensive and I'm sure people bump up their prices for those who have pets as Xmas presents? I've seen loads of ebay listings where people are selling their cages for pets that are given at Christmas...another bug-bear of mine.

awwh hope you get a cagefor them

whispywhisp · 19/12/2009 22:06

Thanks ilovesprouts...I've pretty much spent the whole day today looking at different websites, checking ebay regularly, the local freeads website, pet rescue websites etc etc...DH has been supplying me with cups of tea - he is calling himself an 'Internet Widower' !! Must admit I'm not feeling too well this evening - think I'm going down with something so will probably give up now for the day and try again tomorrow. I've emailed a few people and texted a couple but so far no replies. I've decided to try and buy as big a cage as possible and put them upstairs in DD2's bedroom (the biggest bedroom in the house) because I've noticed they've got a bit excited now that they've discovered females in the cage next to them...iykwim! They really have found their paws this evening!!!

Cheeky things,lol!

whispywhisp · 20/12/2009 11:13

Morning! All ok with Bingo and Bob this morn. Just cleaned them out. They were quite hard to get out of their cage they're in - still very skittish. I've just put them back into their clean cage and put shredded newspaper in instead of woodshavings and they have been running around/hopping - probably can't quite believe they're in a CLEAN cage. I've hung a hay holder (metal ball) from inside their cage (I had a spare one) and filled it with hay. They're up on their back legs pulling the hay out..so they sussed that out quickly. The ball has a bell hanging from it and when it rings they run away! It's funny to watch. They're still not sure about fruit/veg tho and just sit and stare at a lot of it apart from cabbage and apple which they love. I'm still to hear a squeak tho.

Well done whispy!

That is the reason I wouldn't have g pigs or rabbits. I don't want any outdoor caged animals. They do tend to get neglected when they are out in the cold winter garden because it's too cold to stand around petting them . WHen I was a child I had a whole tribe of guineas in an converted wooden duck shed that I had lined with feed sackes and newspaper as insulation. They were quite contented in their own little kingdom and I could actually climb in the shed with them. But one or two animals in a small wooden hutch exposed to the elements - no!

One of the reasons we chose to have rats as they could be kept inside.

Wouldn't mind a house rabbit if I could house train it. Problem is so would my cat

whispywhisp · 20/12/2009 11:57

omiran...I'd love a house rabbit too but I also have a JRT! It'd be lunch for her!

UPDATE!!!

Have just spoken to the neighbour - told her the boys were extremely happy and settled in my kitchen....have asked that we keep them permanently...she has said providing I speak to her daughter (12yo) when she returns home tomorrow after staying at her Dad's and if she agrees then we can keep them....

Now considering the daughter has done sod all with them since she had them I'm hoping I'll convince her they're a lot happier with me plus she can always come round and see them when she wants etc etc....

That is great news.

I sent DH to buy an indoor cage this morning but he came back empty handed. I thought the one he was getting was going to be too small and he said we didn't have room for the bigger one.

Don't know what to do now. They are in all day in a cardboard box but then have to go to bed outside or in the cat carrier.

Flightattendant · 20/12/2009 17:41

I'd offer to get the daughter something in return as a bribe/swap kind of thing iygwim

Well depending on the chance of her agreeing I suppose! Hope you get to hang on to them.

FabIsGettingReadyForXmas · 20/12/2009 17:55

But definitely not an animal!!

whispywhisp · 20/12/2009 17:56

DH says we could offer to top-up her mobile phone (which she's always using!) once he gets paid at the end of the week....or do it over a couple of months or something like that. I'm fairly sure she'll say yes...I'll show her how happy they are and tell her the cold would've killed them - my DD1 gets on well with her and I know we'll convince her they're better off with me.

FAB - have you looked on ebay? There are some second hand cages on there. I can have a look for you if you want if you can CAT me your post code.

OP posts:
whispywhisp · 20/12/2009 17:58

FAB...no definitely not offer to get her another pet. They have a dog and four cats - I'm sure that's enough for them to look after. I've got their hutch too so hopefully they won't ask for that back and that'll put them off getting guineas/rabbits again.

Thank you whispy.

I will buy the new one but we only have PAH and I thought we needed the £60 one and DH was looking to buy the £40.

FabIsGettingReadyForXmas · 20/12/2009 18:01

I need one for 2 piggies.
