Is it normal for cats to act like they own the house?

Does anyone else have a cat who behaves like they’re completely in charge? 😅 Mine blocks doorways, stares at guests, and insists on sitting in the middle of everything like royalty.
Is this just typical cat behaviour, or is there something I should be doing differently?
Would love to hear your experiences!

I have a dog that does this. And then herds you to do what she wants.

TurtleAteMyHomework · 22/02/2026 09:25

I don’t understand the question. Cats do own the house. We are merely servants to their whims and we’re lucky they give us the time of day.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 22/02/2026 09:29

Not only do they own the house, they own everything in it. One of mine likes to supervise as I sort the laundry into piles on the bed. She then tries to savage anyone who attempts to remove any of the piles to put them away. She owns them, so don't touch!

They do own the house. You are there for them!

Harrietsaunt · 22/02/2026 09:31

Completely normal.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 22/02/2026 09:32

Definitely. Mine decides I need to wake up at 5am to feed her. And then does anything she can to achieve that. She's shut out of my room but knows exactly what to do around the house to get me up. I don't feed her at 5am. But she has been waking me up for YEARS to achieve this goal.

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 22/02/2026 09:37

There's a reason the Egyptians worshipped cats.

ZenZazie · 22/02/2026 09:41

100% normal. You are very lucky to have them. They don’t act like royalty, they are royalty. If they tak a dislike to a visitor and don’t want to let them in, trust their judgement over your own.

lemonraspberry · 22/02/2026 09:41

Dogs have masters, cats have staff. Not only do they own the house, you are only there to keep it running for them and accommodate their needs and wishes.

Amen 🙏 especially in this house

Ah yes I also enjoyed the 5am campaign this morning.......

The ancient Egyptians worshipped cats.
Cats consider we should too

LauraNorda · 22/02/2026 09:48

Our cats certainly own the house and everyone and everything in it. One of ours is the area boss cat so she owns everyone elses cat too.

caringcarer · 22/02/2026 09:52

I do worship my 2 cats. When they tell me it's feed time I rush to feed them. When I cook myself chicken I cook them a piece between them too, or they they glare at me. In the evening when it's cold I like to sit on sofa with heated throw. My cats sit on top of it because that is their due.

TheMorgenmuffel · 22/02/2026 09:54

If you're treating them right that's exactly how they act.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 22/02/2026 09:55

Yes. Next question?

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 22/02/2026 09:59

God yes. They have the best chairs, I put the heating on for them , I hold an umbrella over their little heads when they go out for a wee

And they aren’t even our cats

Toddlerteaplease · 22/02/2026 10:04

Err, yes. It’s their house and they just allow you to live there.

This is true. I had a cat who adored everyone. Especially men. I took note when she wouldn’t go near the surveyor doing the survey on my house.

Does my bloody head in. Other than this, she's totally loving and affectionate. But FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD at 5am isn't happening.

Cannot comment until cat tax is paid please

Walker1178 · 22/02/2026 11:10

Every empire has a ruler. In our house it’s Cat1, I accept it, DP accepts it and Cat2 and Cat3 fall in to line too.

Howinthehelldidthishappen · 22/02/2026 11:13

One of mine wakes me up by opening and shutting my wardrobe door. Loudly.
He did this at 2am this morning. Then when he realised I was awake, he hopped on the bed and scratched at the duvet until I let him get under it with me.
He's been outside. It was raining. He was wet. I was not impressed.

Danikm151 · 22/02/2026 11:13

You evidently don’t know that the cat owns you…. They are not your pet. You are their underling only there to serve to their demands.

My cat gets annoyed at me when I dare to work from home sometimes. It’s her space

ilovepixie · 22/02/2026 11:15

Cats not only own the house, they own the world!
