Is it normal for cats to act like they own the house?

Does anyone else have a cat who behaves like they’re completely in charge? 😅 Mine blocks doorways, stares at guests, and insists on sitting in the middle of everything like royalty.
Is this just typical cat behaviour, or is there something I should be doing differently?
Would love to hear your experiences!

In other news, bears have been found to shit in the woods and the Pope is a Catholic 😆

brightnails · 22/02/2026 13:04

I’d be concerned if they didn’t. our neighbour’s lovely cat acts like he owns this too lol 🐈

HoppityBun · 22/02/2026 13:07

Cat owners like their cats to behave as humans would if they owned the house. But that says more about the owners. Cats are just being cats. They don’t behave like humans.

Triflingjelly · 22/02/2026 13:10

I firmly believe the only reason they haven't taken over entirely is their lack of opposable thumbs.

Paperwhite209 · 22/02/2026 13:21

Oh yes.

I got my girls post-divorce and eight years on they are very sniffy about strange blokes.

I had estate agents round for valuations on Friday and I'm trying not to factor in that one of them actually voluntarily came out of hiding for one of them as a stamp of approval 😂

IsEveryUserNameBloodyTaken · 22/02/2026 13:27

What are you doing in their house.Have they given permission for you to be there.

auserna · 22/02/2026 13:34

It's abnormal if they don't, isn't it?

That cravendale advert always make me laugh.

God yes. They have the best chairs, I put the heating on for them , I hold an umbrella over their little heads when they go out for a wee

And they aren’t even our cats

I love this … don’t let the word get round though, I just get disgruntled looks when it’s wet, as if it’s my fault.

I have never had a cat of my own, but I thought that's the law. One of the reasons I sincerely hope I will be reincarnated as a cat 🐱

Fl0weryTwats · 22/02/2026 14:03

All three of mine are perfectly capable of using the cat flap, but they won’t. They will sit and shout until a human staff member opens the door. More fool us for indulging them!

Haha yes

Someone else remembers that advert 😻😻😻

Isn't this what cats are known for? I think it's fairly common knowledge that cats rule over their house and the house of any human they deign to visit. And any gardens they choose to roam. The only threat they face is other cats on their turf.

Rhubarbandcustardd · 22/02/2026 14:20

Er…yes 😂😂

Does my bloody head in. Other than this, she's totally loving and affectionate. But FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD at 5am isn't happening.

Maybe you could get one of those automatic feeders and set it every night to pop open at 5am?

Or Would she refuse food that had been out more than 5 mins?

Slightyamusedandsilly · 22/02/2026 15:46

She'd eat it. But she'd still want feeding again at 7! She's fat already (not that I have any room for talk).

I’m fortunate enough to work from home and have my desk next to the front door. Lynx has assumed I’m his personal concierge - at regular intervals I hear the meow to let me in / let me out. And yes, every single time, I do as he asks. Damn cat.

Overtheatlantic · 24/02/2026 21:27

Am I the only idiot who actually gets up and feeds the cat at 5am? And yes, they own all the real estate. Next doors has several houses in the neighborhood.

My husband was up at 3am (roughly) the other night because our cat wanted to look through the open door.
No. I'm not joking.

She woke him up and he got up and stood at the open door in the middle of the night so our cat could look outside from the doorway.

He expected sympathy from me!

Fat chance. I told him to start telling her no, to which he replied YOU tell her no! 🤣

This is true. I had a cat who adored everyone. Especially men. I took note when she wouldn’t go near the surveyor doing the survey on my house.

My dear departed girl was chill with tradesmen in her old age, but the plasterer - a small, quiet, friendly-seeming man - sent her scurrying under the sofa... My own spidey senses were pinging too, I was so on edge...

Later on he started talking about how men should never hit a woman and he'd never do such a thing... it was apropos of nothing, and I thought 'Miss Kitty and I have got you bang to rights...'. 😧🙀

Fifthtimelucky · 25/02/2026 12:34

Mine has now decided he owns the road.

A neighbour knocked on the front door this morning to ask for some help. Our cat was sitting under her car and she was trying to leave. She had got out of the car twice and enticed him out, but as soon as she got back into the car he ran back underneath!

Jasmin71 · 25/02/2026 12:57

It's the cat's house!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 25/02/2026 13:00

It’s not an act, @james5555 - they do own the house. CatBastard agrees with this.

We suspect my previous cat was abused by a man as she was very wary of them. Except for one guy who came to check the burglar alarm. She came in the door, ignored me (her chosen human) and threw herself on the floor in front of him, dramatically offering up her belly for rubs! She also quite liked the plunger but I think that was because he had exciting toys in his bag.
