Xl bully ban

Louise0808 · 04/02/2024 13:38

I have quite a big opinion on the banned dog list. It doesn't work for a start. I genuinely do believe the goverment have to do 1 of these things. Bring in a responsible dog owner law. Not just large dogs though, im sick of being attacked by small dogs too. Or make a law where every single dog is muzzled in public regardless of breed. I know the argument of large dogs cause more damage but a bite is a bite and regardless of size or damage it shouldn't be tolerated. Everyone deserves to be safe. I know someone will say my dog doesn't need a muzzle they've done nothing wrong but neither have mine and I've had to exempt my 2 american bulldogs which are a completely different breed because the criteria covers their breed too ( measurements).
And then today another fatality from xl bullies. Its ridiculous. I'm so sick of crappy people ruining dog ownership for the rest of us and taking peoples lives or causing injuries because they are irresponsible as. I'm not overly fussed by the exemption or the muzzles. It doesn't bother me. I know alot of people fear large dogs and it's my choice to have them. So they are well trained and now will be muzzled. That's fine. But what is being done to stop this happening again to another breed?
This banned list just doesn't work. There needs to be something else.
How do you personally think things should go?

@puncheur yep you’re right. I can totally see how that is needed. But that is surely a rare, unique and fairly isolated instance.

@CrispsandCheeseSandwich completely agree. The young boy around here who was mauled. That dog had already been aggressive before and the owner was spoken to. It should have been seized and put down. And that little boy wouldn't have lost his life.

Exactly what another poster said. People are to flippant with aggression.

I too agree with 'One bite and euthanasia'
Nice dogs don't go around biting people.

Children and dogs...Personally I wouldn't have young children with dogs- kids can be over excitable and 'rough' without realising.

In local Park, a little girl grabbed her dog's cheeks and twisted hard, ramming her face into the dog's face.

The dog backed away. The father said ''That's why we went with this breed {Cocker/poo type}...good with children''....But he should be training his children to respect a dog's space and face especially.

It seems as if there is no common sense around dogs any more.

@puncheur. Thank you.
I didnt think guarding breeds were that shocking.

Louise0808 · 04/02/2024 17:35

@oakleaffy well he's irresponsible. My children have always had rules to live by with the dogs. There are boundaries. They arent toys. Doesn't matter what breed you by. The rules are the same.

The issue really is breeds that are bred to bite and grip on to their “prey” - those are the ones that do the most damage. These are the ones that, most of the time, are going to cause significant injury to the recipient- be it another dog or a person. There’s a big difference between being snapped at, and being mauled. All those should only be owned with a licence (although I appreciate that is unrealistic). The only people I know with a guarding breed have them for that purpose. They are not pets. And they would happily pay for whatever licensing was required.

I also think people are too flippant about any breed showing aggression. The retriever discussed above- had that been my dog, it would have been euthanised immediately. Especially in “friendlier” or “smaller” breeds- these are not behaviours people take seriously enough. There seems to be a rising issue with inter-dog aggression as well. Again, regardless of the breed, any signs of this and they should be muzzled and on a lead at all times in public. Dog ownership in this country in general seems to have lost it’s mind- and people are much less keen to take responsibility for the animals they own.

Also agree 100% with this.
The Golden Retriever that savaged the postwoman's hand...that WASN'T euthanised.
It ought to have been.

All that happened was that the postmen and women didn't deliver there any more.

There definitely has been a sea change in dog ownership on the past ten years- People getting dogs without thought, without research, and just buying on impulse.
''Oh look! cute little XL Bully puppies!''...without realising they turn into giants that are very hard to physically manage.

People in cities buying ''Working line'' Cocker Spaniels and Border Collies.

It's nuts.

A lot of large Labradoodles and Vizlas about as well..these need a lot of exercise to keep them happy.

A lovely older woman near us always has nice dogs. All of them rescued ones, but she seems to always have lovely, gentle calm dogs...because she chooses wisely.
As she is getting older, her dogs are getting smaller...she knows she can't do the long walks like she used to be able to.

Sensible owner.

Louise0808 · 04/02/2024 17:45

@oakleaffy.
Completely slipped my mind but you are right. The amount of working spaniels and collies I see about which aren't for pet homes. Same thing.
Each breed takes serious consideration.
I imagine as I get older I won't own such large dogs. But for now I can.

OP posts:
puncheur · 04/02/2024 17:48

@MrsKwazi it’s really not. Many of them are also family pets although some are kept purely as guard dogs. If you see GSDs in the country chances are they are used for guarding premises. I’ve never actually seen a Bully XL, only read about them in the news.

Just pointing out that the vast majority of premises with guard dogs are perfectly legitimate homes and businesses. We don’t all live in cities with an active police presence - my nearest police station is 15 miles away, and that’s close by compared to many people.

I agree with you OP. BSL doesn’t work. The Calgary model is something I think should be seriously considered.

The problem with the Calgary model is that puts heavy restrictions on dogs that don't need them. Mine have never bitten, have excellent recall, and will walk off-lead to heel past livestock (sheep 10' away)*, despite having epic prey drive.

  • Before anyone starts, I had the owner's permission.
Missingmyusername · 04/02/2024 17:56

🙌👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻couldn’t agree more @Louise0808
As someone who almost lost an eye to my JRT! (Dementia, old age, I scared him- 100% my fault).

BSL does not work. I’m already waiting for the next breed to be created…. Badly trained, ill treated, nervous. We need to look at the human factor and address that issue. These dogs didn’t breed themselves.

@PinkyBlueMe - could be she rescued a pregnant dog and didn’t know or if you truly believe these dogs won’t be bred underground for use in dog fighting and god knows what then you are sadly mistaken.

FancyJapflack · 04/02/2024 18:03

Once these dogs get a decent hold they do not let go for anything. I do t mean their jaws lock - that’s a myth - but they are tenacious and incredibly strong. You can beat them in the head with an iron bar and they won’t feel it.

I am a dog lover but I can guarantee that I would grab the longest knife I could find and stick it in the throat of any dog who wouldn’t let go of a person. No point pissing about with break sticks and water or hitting them.

forgotmyusername1 · 04/02/2024 18:04

All dogs now have to be chipped.
Maybe as a part of that they also need to be registered to a central data base.
Police carry scanners and can scan problem dogs for chips. No chip = immediate seizure of the dog.
Owners have to have 3rd party liability and pay an annual fee for the dog.
Only way for the dog to come off the database is if a vet verifies the animal as deceased. Until that point the annual fee is payable with a fine for non compliance and seizure of the animal.

Make it so that dog ownership comes with a cost and responsibilities. Can't cope with the responsibilities, don't have a dog.

Louise0808 · 04/02/2024 18:05

@Missingmyusername
Another good point. Nobody is factoring in the breeding here.

The gsd? It's gone to pot now because of bad breeding, breeding unhealthy, nervy, weak temperament dogs. The local police have to give alot of their gsd pups to pet homes because they arent bred to the standard they need.
Same for alot of breeds.
Breeding plays a humongous part in this.

I can guarantee some idiots have gotten a male and female with aggression, weak temperament and put them together because they " look good".

I don't advocate for breeding in general unless the dogs are health tested, temperament tested etc. And then they need to be bettering the breed, not just increasing the numbers. Why add more when there is enough? Why breed if they aren't good enough? Sounds snobby but it's true

@QueenCamilla. I'm glad you feel safer but there is not enough police to enforce this ban in every area across the country so I do think a second law needs to be considered. There Is also not enough kennel space for this level of dogs.

All I can say for the owner of that particular dog is that he/she was very irresponsible. Sport dogs are not trained in public spaces by irresponsible owners. Pitbulls are a sport working dog. I dont believe just anyone should own one.

What sport? Blood sport?
The sport of ripping other dogs, animals or people to pieces?
No one needs to own one.

oakleaffy · 04/02/2024 18:08

Each breed /type does indeed require careful consideration.

A lovely family who used to own an off licence always had German Shepherd dogs {Rescued ones} ..They were well exercised and trained...Their massive furry ears visible behind the counter definitely put off thieves.

Now the family are older, and the ''children'' have families of their own and have moved away, they have smaller dogs.

Louise0808 · 04/02/2024 18:14

I said the same. All dogs are microchipped. I do think the police should be tracing these dogs back to the breeders and go from there.

Also most dogs bite and hold. It's a dog thing. Whether they rip or not is breed type I have to say. I'm glad you said lock jaw is a myth.
But you CAN get a dog off of any bite. You are actually meant to cut off the air way. With their collar. A dog that's biting will only let go for air. Beating them doesn't help, water? That's never worked. Of course this is if it's a dog on dog fight. I'm with you on the sharp thing if it's a person or child. There's no room to mess about. I've separated a few big dog fights ( not my own before anyone thinks that). And I've had to use the leads to tighten around one dogs throat because they were only wearing a harness. Dogs separated with minimal damage compared to what could have happened.
I wasn't hurt or the owners.
My friemd has separated a terrier fight and got bit by the terrier. Her finger was in bits and she has no feeling in that part of her hand anymore. She and the owners tried pulling the dogs mouths apart. Which did not help.
I think everyone should know how to seperate dogs safely that's the only reason I've responded with this.

The only sport pit bulls were bred for was dog fighting.

There are plenty of legitimate full-on dog sports, though, like IGP and Mondio.

79andnotout · 04/02/2024 18:22

Not all large breeds are aggressive. I have two greyhounds (30kg and 35kg) who combined weigh significantly more than me, and they are happy trotting along with me on lead. They have a high prey drive for squirrels but I can't ever see that translating into them biting and hanging onto a human. They are far more likely to run from conflict than to engage in it.

Having said that, I have muzzled them in the past while I was getting to know their personality post rescuing and would have no issue doing that longterm if that was the law.

I would fully support a dog owner license with training involved. We do training classes whenever we adopt new dogs to improve the bond and give them some socialisation skills with other breeds.

PinkyBlueMe · 04/02/2024 15:11

With the poor lady today, the family says there were 2 XL bullies but also 6 XL puppies. I thought they shouldn't be bred now???
It's often visitors the house that get attacked and I can't understand why you would visit a house with those dogs in. The owner went out and left the poor lady (and her grandson who I guess lives there) with them!

There are numerous XL Bully sites all over FB openly offering pups for "adoption"

Louise0808 · 04/02/2024 18:26

@EdithStourton yep that is what they were originally bred for but as that's illegal now people have adapted. The world isn't going to kill every pitbull because they can't dog fight anymore. They are here.
American bulldogs can't hog hunt here so they go to other sports. I'm not saying they are great at it compared to other breeds. But its a way to fulfil the dogs drive in some way.

As I said in my comment sport dogs are not trained in public. It sounds like that dog in particular was being worked on a bite. Which owners do. Safely with trainers in a suit. Not a street, so irresponsible of that owner to even try that.
I will call pitbulls sport dogs because they are. Just the sport they were originally bred for no longer exists. Thankfully.

@79andnotout . That brings an interesting point up. Are these breeds included in the large dogs people want removed? Greyhounds? St Bernard's? Huskies?
I mean my female is 33kg so in the same range as your greyhound. Is this all large breeds being targeted or is it just the bull breeds? The mastiffs?

I have had dogs continuously since I was seven years old. I always keep my dog on a lead. In town he walks on a short lead, in the park and open countryside he has an extending lead. I consider myself to be a very responsible dog owner. He exercises on the lead and in my garden. I don’t let him tear around off the lead and say ‘he needs his exercise’ as I’ve heard other owners whinge when their dog runs up to mine and lunges at him. This happens frequently. I see no reason to muzzle my dog (Irish Terrier) because he’s managed properly, so that he couldn’t cause problems to other dogs or humans. Recall should not be a consideration; recall can fail, dogs are dogs. It’s all about respect, care and courtesy. My suggestion (and I talk to many folks who say the same) is twofold: firstly, dogs should be kept on a lead - ALL dogs, end of. Secondly, no one should be in possession of a dog that they cannot overcome and bring under control if it goes berserk. I was walking my dog the other day and turned a corner to meet a man walking a ridgeback and a mastiff together. They were on a lead but lunged at my dog and he had an almighty battle on to keep hold of them. I was petrified and had nowhere to escape as we were in a narrow alley. I’m sick of these people who get large dogs with genetic guarding traits who could only look on helplessly as the beasts attack other dogs and humans.

Louise0808 · 04/02/2024 19:02

@Reflectivegran
I'm not disagreeing. It's irresponsible to walk 2 large dogs on your own because like you've Said he had a job controlling them. It comes down to being responsible. I've seen people walking large dogs in flip flops and I have to say something everytime. That isn't safe footwear to wear controlling a dog. I feel like most of the things mentioned on this thread are common sense but somehow so many people don't have it. Its a shame

it dreadfully sad but I believe that’s the only way to eradicate this problem. If they are illegal full stop the bad owners would be snitched on and their dogs seized. As usual, the few bad have spoilt it for everyone.
