Help me find a (close) replacement kitten for DS

One of my DS has quite significant anxiety. He is 9, but emotionally quite young & has been through a lot with various medical and emotional things going on.

I’d agreed with DS to get him a kitten, and we discussed that kitten would be a nice focus for him if he’s feeling anxious, and he was so very excited and proud at the prospect of caring for said kitten. I felt this may also in some way help regulate some of his anxiety and he loves to care for our neighbours and friends cats.

So we selected a kitten from a supplier, and DS set his heart on the one chosen, including naming him and choosing all the items said kitten would require. DS counting down the days until we can collect him - and I’d booked next Friday off work to be able to do this (also coinciding with an inset day.)

This morning we hear from kitten supplier that sadly kitten has passed away (evidently wasn’t viable and there were no signs or obvious cause, just one of those things, sadly.) I honestly daren’t tell my son - it’s been such a huge focus for him, and he’s been so looking forward to bringing kitten home.

Would the collective MN community have any leads as to a close-ish replacement? This may be a real long shot. But I simply can’t break this to my son until I have a back up plan.

Ideally replacement kitten would be in or around greater London / home counties / SE area.

Image of original kitten enclosed. I do appreciate the kitten is not replaceable but I’m really keen to at least have another close-ish option so I don’t simply come to my son with bad news.

Got on great @WannabeKittens - and thanks for asking! All set up for him, and all was all very straight toward via the rescue. Lots of good advice and DC is thrilled.

Waitingforsummer75 · 05/07/2023 21:05

Oh my goodness, he's absolutely gorgeous. Enjoy being a cat slave 😊

Floralnomad · 05/07/2023 21:11

He’s lovely , congratulations @TheJourneyAhead .

GardeningIdiot · 05/07/2023 21:13

What a cutie! What's his name?

This is my favourite MN thread (apart from the fate of the poor little soul that prompted it).

You've been a star, @Waitingforsummer75.

NeedleFeltedFox · 05/07/2023 21:23

Oh congratulations op what a little cutie!

TheJourneyAhead · 05/07/2023 21:24

Thanks for all the positivity! He’s being absolutely spoiled with cuddles and strokes currently. He’s got 3 extremely engaged older siblings who are just so ready to welcome him into our home and pamper him.

Aww, he does look a sweetie, just make sure the children give him some space so he doesn't get too overwhelmed.

TheJourneyAhead · 05/07/2023 21:31

Yep @Yarnorama ! Trying to explain to them he’s young and it’s his first night and he needs an enclosed quiet space to settle in!

Pleased you went with a rescue 😍 what’s his name?

PurpleReindeer2 · 05/07/2023 21:47

He's adorable 😍

99redballoons123 · 05/07/2023 21:48

Oh how adorable. Congratulations.
It's definitely good that your children know he might need space and quiet etc but just bear in mind not all cats do. I rescued my boy many years ago, had 4 children home at the time. He simply took all their affection as his due determined that we were all satisfactory and has barely left the house since. He loved the affection and noise of the household right from the start. When I tried to usher him into his lovingly set up quiet space he was not at all amused! So I'd definitely advise to just go with the flow and see what's he's comfortable with.

TheJourneyAhead · 05/07/2023 21:57

Thank you @99redballoons123 - that’s incredibly helpful and also rather heart warming! I do think there needs to be a degree of intuition. And so far he seems to be enjoying some pampering. But I’m trying to pace things a little and not suffocate him with our affection!

You was going to say some of them hit the ground running... 😊 I foster and have had them settle almost immediately if already socialised and not particularly nervous.

TheJourneyAhead · 05/07/2023 22:03

Thanks @GardeningIdiot - I could def use all the tips I can get right now. He does feel like a good match for us however. Very playful. Very confident. Curious!

He does sound perfect for you all.

I suppose it's about making sure he can escape attention if he wants to, making sure the children recognise his body language, and going at his pace.

Having said that, it's just me at first so a different situation.

He's a very lucky boy to have found you! 🖤🤍

SmartHome · 05/07/2023 23:53

Adorable!

My main tip is because he's a male he might be quite adventurous when older and wander and get stuck in sheds etc (our male cat did). So make sure you get him a nice collar and a tag with his name address and phone number on it before he's out and about. We also found a cat flap that reacts to your cats chip to open it was helpful too.

What's his name?

TheJourneyAhead · 06/07/2023 06:38

Loving the tips - thank you!

So he had a peaceful and uneventful first nice. He’s using his litter tray, and his preferred spot so far is my work chair (it’s got soft padding and a nice texture he seems to like.) Not interested in his bed 😀 - much like my own DC! He seems to have a playful, bold and quirky nature and is fitting in just fine.

We’ve named him Leonardo!

Thanks for your tips @SmartHome - I do get the sense he’ll be highly adventurous and get himself into all sorts of scrapes!

@GardeningIdiot - thanks v much for the info. I read the ICC web page as per your link - and it provides a brilliant capsule oversight for a novice cat owner!

Oh my goodness! I volunteer where you got him from and was going to suggest one of this litter! I recognised him from the photo, then the name confirmed it. They are a lively but confident litter who I had difficulty trying to take pics of a couple of weeks ago

This doesn't look like a cat in need of a quiet space.

This looks like a cat regally accepting adoration from his subjects! Clearly born to rule!
