How to tell what the gender is of a cat

I've just bought a 6 month old kitten previous owner told me it was a boy but the cat is acting like it's on heat.... if I post a picture would anyone be able to tell me the cat is booked in at the vets the 4th January...

At 6 months it should be quite noticeable. Definitely post a photo

DuchessDandelion · 19/12/2022 21:39

There was a helpful post on another cat thread recently (which made it into classics). If your kitten appears to have a : under its tail, it's a boy and it's a ; it's a girl (I think!)

Ideally at 6 months if a boy he should have little balls but I once had a kitten who's balls were nearly too dinky to neuter so...

I've tried looking on Google and I'm still confused

It's hard to tell from that angle, usually the distance between anus and sex organ is a bit of a clue, I have only ever seen examples with the cat stood up and tail lifted though.

givethistokevin · 19/12/2022 21:44

I would guess female
Form your pic though

Arabelli · 19/12/2022 21:45

It's female.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 19/12/2022 21:46

Sex. The sex of the cat.

Newuser82 · 19/12/2022 21:49

Looks female but would be easier with the cat standing up with tail upward

NeverDropYourMooncup · 19/12/2022 21:49

That's a female. Sounds like the owner assumed she was male because of the colour and then needed to get shot once she had her first season, especially as by 6th months, she could well be almost constantly like it, stinking the house out, howling her head off all night, trying to escape and propositioning the dog, Amazon man and anything that even slightly looks like it might have a penis.

I thought most cats identify as hairy menaces? (Mine bloody do)

Extratoebeans · 19/12/2022 21:50

If you can take a photo from behind with the tail held up while they are stood it might be abit easier, although I think girl from that photo.

FannyFifer · 19/12/2022 21:51

Well does it have bollocks or not, pretty easy to tell, just look from the back.

Borris · 19/12/2022 21:55

I'd say girl based on that picture. Has it not had vaccines as the vet would check sex then?

Jord8 · 19/12/2022 21:55

That's the best I can get with the cat stood up on me!

The previous owner said the cat has... we've only just brought the cat home today... I've booked the vets and they've gave me an appointment for the 4th January 😩

Yikes that is a close up!!
I reckon female.

IScreamAtMichaelangelos · 19/12/2022 21:58

Ask the cat if it prefers playing with trucks or dollies and you'll have your answer.

Neither of those sheds any light on its sex, though!

One of mine identifies as The Man of the House, Fabled Shadow Warrior and Tyrant of Rodents, King, Emperor, Master and Lord of Misrule.

Doesn't change the fact that he's a gormless twat who frequently falls over from a position of sitting down and has knocked the points off all his canines from faceplanting into the front room window at least three times a day for the last ten years.

Unfortunately people often lie about these things when selling animals. If its been vaccinated you should be given a vaccine record card or their vets can send your vets the medical history. If they can't prove its been done I'd recommend restarting the vaccine course ASAP to protect your cat.

Jord8 · 19/12/2022 22:06

@AwkwardPaws27 nope he didn't give me nothing a tiny bit of food that the cat was eating.. didn't seem to give a damn about the cat tbh, and soon as weve got the cat home I rang the vets to get an appointment and the first one they had for a full health check and for a microchip was the 4th 😩

Sex. A cat had a sex it doesn't have a gender.

Yes I
Think this is the reason he's done it too!

I agree with pp , it's a female ( I think ) my previous cat was a female we were told she had been spayed when we got her, we found out a few weeks later she clearly hadn't, she kept standing with her but in the air and crouch down at front , a bit like when a puppy was to play.

Keeping her in the house was next to impossible even if the window was only I tiny bit open ( locked in position) she would stand there and shout at the top of her lungs

COME AND GET IT BOYS
And boy did they try .

Fortunately we managed to get her booked into the vets fairly quickly.

Clicked only to settle quiet bet with myself on how quickly someone would correct gender to sex.
