woman wants to return cat?

hi all,

looking for some advice please …. so a few months ago we bought a rag doll cat, we’ve had cats in the past & had no issues, however, i noticed my 6 year old developed itchy eyes, tight chest, hives & cough …. i never realised that it was possibly the cat until we went away for a week & her symptoms disappeared :(. she has no other allergies so this has really came out of the blue but now she requires a blue asthma inhaler & been diagnosed with asthma which dr believes is allergy related.

anyway .. we tried everything possible to
limit a reaction… cat staying out of her room, hoovering, daily antihistamine .. & nothing changed actually she was getting worse! as a rag doll she’s an inside cat so couldn’t even let her out most of the day!

after trying everything we decided to rehome her, thankfully a family friend wanted her …. she’s only been there 3 days & she wants to bring her back!!! saying she’s hiding won’t come out biting scratching won’t eat much but to me i think she’s not giving her enough time & also forcing herself on the cat & needs to adjust her expectations!

family friend was very aware that cat wasn’t very affectionate they met a few times prior to rehoming & she has much experience owning cats so i’m a bit flabbergasted!

am i unreasonable in saying i cannot have her back? my daughter is at risk of asthma attack & dr said with increased exposure to cat this risk increases….. but i also feel sorry for the cat

what can i do???!

You need to take her back and rehome the poor thing responsibly! Or pay for a cattery until you can do so. Poor cat and I’m not even a cat fan!

SolasAnla · 14/08/2022 08:22

Ask the person that you bought it from if they can find a new home for it.

Ask your friend to look for a new home via her network of family& friends and you do the same via your network.

Ask the vet you use if they will put up a poster or have anyone who lost a cat recently who would be interested in rehoming the cat.

Seaweasel · 14/08/2022 08:22

Phone round every shelter you can and hope that one can take the cat? Ask the original seller if they will take her back? I wouldn't want to leave an animal with a family who didn't want it. It's a tough position to be in.

Pegasushaswings · 14/08/2022 08:24

I say do the right thing by the cat, it’s the least you can do-your friend sounds like an idiot, all cats hide or are nervous in new places and she CBA to deal with it basically, don’t trust her to find the right home!

GetOffTheRoof · 14/08/2022 08:26

You need to contact the breeder and ask them to take the kitten back. That's what a responsible breeder would ask you to do.

Poor wee thing.

PritiPatelsMaker · 14/08/2022 08:27

Please give her to a breed specific charity like Ragdoll Rescue who will know the breed and rehome her with someone who knows how to take care of her.

@ChiefPearlClutcher sorry but this is a bit rude? rspca recommend rehoming to a person you know so you can have checks etc… keep in context & know the persons character etc .. uncalled for.

Its not rude at all. This poor cat is being passed from one person to another probably getting more and more distressed as it happens and now going to be put with a rescue or someone else all at only a few months old. Please get in touch with a rescue who will take the cat and hopefully they will find a forever home and the cat can at last find a stable family.

Antarcticant · 14/08/2022 08:33

The poor little thing. It's hardly unusual for a newly homed cat to hide for three days. My boy hid for over a week ... now he's the most loving cat in the world. I hope she can be rehomed via a rescue to someone with a better understanding of cats than your friend. It isn't your fault, OP.

liveforsummer · 14/08/2022 08:44

This is the problem with private rehoming. Call a rescue instead. Maybe a breed specific one but this is definitely your responsibility to do. You may have to drive a distance but better in the long run. Poor cat

Wheelz46 · 14/08/2022 08:50

Could you go back to the breeder, most responsible breeders will be more than happy to take the cat back and look to rehome.

she’s been in hiding & she’s trying to stroke her etc that’s why she’s attacked!!!

liveforsummer · 14/08/2022 09:41

Not sure what the RSPCA will do. The cat hasn't been abused in any way from what I can tell. You do need to get the cat back though ASAP. It must be so distressed

PritiPatelsMaker · 14/08/2022 09:44

I think she's forced your hand.

I'd dose DD up with antihistamine and go and get your cat and speak to a breed specific charity, like the one I linked earlier. If you can't get hold of a breed specific charity just speak to your local animal rescue.

Beamur · 14/08/2022 09:46

Take the cat and get it to a rescue. Poor cat.

UserError012345 · 14/08/2022 09:47

Does the person who has her currently have any experience with cats? Tbh he doesn't sound overly bright or au fait with being a cat owner.

You are right to rehome as upsetting as it is. Your DD must come first.

Can you contact your local RSPCA or Cats Protection branch?

KentuckyDerbyandJoan · 14/08/2022 09:48

Go and get the cat back immediately, how dare that idiot threaten to take her to the vets. Pay for a cattery until she can be rehomed safely.

It's not uncalled for, the way you've rehomed this poor cat is completely irresponsible. The new 'owners' obviously have no idea about how to introduce a cat to their home properly and give it time to adjust.

You need to see if a rescue will take it and rehome properly, poor thing

unicormb · 14/08/2022 09:52

Did you sell the cat? Are you now going to have to refund them?

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 14/08/2022 09:52

Well Adam sounds nice!

You need to go get the cat. Keep her in a separate room from your DD and contact the breeder. They should take her back.

BorderlineObsessedWithYou · 14/08/2022 09:52

So many irresponsible humans. From breeders, to people taking cats that they’re not committed to. Poor cat.

You need to take her back and rehome her responsibly this time.

liveforsummer · 14/08/2022 09:53

OP said they bought a cat not a kitten so I'm not sure the breeder is on the scene?

unknown88x · 14/08/2022 09:53

yes 200 pound & they want a refund
