woman wants to return cat?

unknown88x · 14/08/2022 08:17

hi all,

looking for some advice please …. so a few months ago we bought a rag doll cat, we’ve had cats in the past & had no issues, however, i noticed my 6 year old developed itchy eyes, tight chest, hives & cough …. i never realised that it was possibly the cat until we went away for a week & her symptoms disappeared :(. she has no other allergies so this has really came out of the blue but now she requires a blue asthma inhaler & been diagnosed with asthma which dr believes is allergy related.

anyway .. we tried everything possible to
limit a reaction… cat staying out of her room, hoovering, daily antihistamine .. & nothing changed actually she was getting worse! as a rag doll she’s an inside cat so couldn’t even let her out most of the day!

after trying everything we decided to rehome her, thankfully a family friend wanted her …. she’s only been there 3 days & she wants to bring her back!!! saying she’s hiding won’t come out biting scratching won’t eat much but to me i think she’s not giving her enough time & also forcing herself on the cat & needs to adjust her expectations!

family friend was very aware that cat wasn’t very affectionate they met a few times prior to rehoming & she has much experience owning cats so i’m a bit flabbergasted!

am i unreasonable in saying i cannot have her back? my daughter is at risk of asthma attack & dr said with increased exposure to cat this risk increases….. but i also feel sorry for the cat

what can i do???!

Do you not have to return to the breeder ?

Have you tried the fur wipes on the cat ? It really helped my DH allergy - might not work long term but give you a bit of time to get the best solution

boatahoy · 14/08/2022 10:54

I'm surprised you said they were experienced with cats as from the message he sent you it really doesn't sound like it. Cats need time and tlc to settle into a new home and as a rag doll owner I find them to be the friendliest breed of cat. Ours is so friendly even to strangers who visit and a joy to have around. I agree your daughter comes first and you're doing the right thing by her but I would collect the cat and contact the vet, rag doll rehoming charity or cats protection as others have suggested, keeping the cat as separate from your daughter as you can. I hope you manage to find a good home for the cat.

Do you not have to return to the breeder

I think that's just dogs but not entirely sure.

It's not. Any reputable breeder of pedigree cats will do the same.

Bubbafly · 14/08/2022 11:15

You fucking sold the cat for £200! Now you are just pissed off you have to pay the money back AND find some other fool to pay that money for the poor animal.

after trying everything we decided to rehome her

I think you mean SELL her.

OpinionsUnseen · 14/08/2022 11:15

And seriously no vet will put down a healthy pedigree cat just because it’s scratched someone’s hand ! sorry but they absolutely would.

Friend is a vet nurse and says the hardest part of her job is when owners come in with perfectly healthy animals and have them put to sleep for inocuous reasons.

The reality is that at least euthanasia is humane whereas if the vet refuses to do it the owner could do the job themselves in a far less humane way.

But unless the owner is prepared to relinquish the animal to the vet they have an obligation to put it to sleep.

Bubbafly · 14/08/2022 11:22

Your title says "woman" wants to return cat but then you say it is a family friend?

Christmasiscominghohoho · 14/08/2022 11:25

Take the cat back. Poor thing.

rehome it properly!

Hobele · 14/08/2022 11:26

GetOffTheRoof · 14/08/2022 08:26

You need to contact the breeder and ask them to take the kitten back. That's what a responsible breeder would ask you to do.

Poor wee thing.

Exactly this. Didn't you sign a contract OP, that states you'll contact the breeder if you can't keep the cat for any reason?

Stripedbag101 · 14/08/2022 11:26

Being a pet owner is such a huge responsibility- the animal relies on you entirely For their welfare.

i am glad you have accepted you for this wrong and the cat is back with you.

a cat charity or the breeder should be able to find a decent home.

but please, no more pets. Don’t try a ‘hypoallergenic’ breed of cat or dog.

Hobele · 14/08/2022 11:31

OP, where's the original breeder in this story?
Did the people who took the cat in even separate the two cats? Ragdolls are meant to be very affectionate, are you sure yours is a ragdoll?

gogohmm · 14/08/2022 11:31

We have a ragdoll cross, nightmare! It's not my cat, it's dsd's we took it in. I'm allergic to it and I don't wish that on anyone. @Stripedbag101 it's tough isn't it? I like cats but my body doesn't either. As hard as it is rehoming through a charity is the right thing to do. I'm dosed up with antihistamines all the time now, I wouldn't want that for a child.

Ignore the horrible comments op, the first solution seemed ok until it wasn't. Hope a new home is found quickly

PritiPatelsMaker · 14/08/2022 11:38

Sounds like you've reached a good solution so far. DD should enjoy some one to one time with your DM and the cat will be safe.

Hope you get a reputable charity to take her if the breeder won't.

Spohn · 14/08/2022 11:44

Are rescues not snowed under with unwanted cats?

OP won’t answer why it’s breeder won’t take it back?

Suzi888 · 14/08/2022 11:47

ChiefPearlClutcher · 14/08/2022 08:22

You need to take her back and rehome the poor thing responsibly! Or pay for a cattery until you can do so. Poor cat and I’m not even a cat fan!

This^

RSPCA are absolutely useless, so I wouldn’t take her there.

Poor cat.

Please don’t get any more pets.

hi everyone

my daughter is staying with my mum until i find a solution for the cat i’m collecting het in an hour - i’ve taken all comments on board some not so empathetic but noted, i’m refunding & this has been a very horrible life lesson.

Well done OP. Difficult situation all round and not really of your making. You couldn't have predicted allergies or that the cat wouldn't settle.

Good luck with finding a suitable solution.

I really think that Cats Protection might be your best bet. They will have a list of pre-approved people waiting for a new addition. As she's pedigree I'm sure it won't be long till she's matched.

It's possible that the new person will have experience of the breed / pedigree.

BungleandGeorge · 14/08/2022 12:11

If she’s a pedigree the breeder will almost certainly take her back. Otherwise get a charity to rehome her. They will do appropriate checks to get her a nice home. They will also take her back if it doesn’t work out. Neither of these options will give you any money back but you really need to put the welfare of the cat first. The only reason people recommend selling pets is to reduce the chance of sending them to someone looking for dog bait etc. If you re-homed to a family friend that wasn’t necessary

birdfeeders · 14/08/2022 12:13

You need to get your cat back, then arrange for a.proper professional rescue rehoming. You can't pass the buck to your friend and God knows what will happen to your loved family pet whatever your friend fancies doing. Take responsibility and get the cat into the right home via the right channels

PritiPatelsMaker · 14/08/2022 12:59

Yes, they seemed to be able to sort it all out very quickly in the end didn't they? Almost too quickly...

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 14/08/2022 14:39

Yes @unicormb she moved unreasonable fast to say the new owner was threatening to PTS if she didn't go and collect the cat straight away!

Ffs 🤦🏼‍♀️

unknown88x · 14/08/2022 09:53

yes 200 pound & they want a refund

Ah, and here is the issue. Explains why you’re not doing the right thing for the poor cat and going to pick it up immediately. Awful

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 14/08/2022 14:43

Ffs people RTFT

OP has already gone to collect the cat!

SpaghettiSquash · 14/08/2022 14:52

@unknown88x Glad you've got the cat back. Will you now contact the breeder to return the cat to them? In the meantime try using this www.allergybestbuys.co.uk/products/petalcleanse-for-cat-and-small-animal-allergy

I have a cat allergy and asthma and this really helped.
