woman wants to return cat?

hi all,

looking for some advice please …. so a few months ago we bought a rag doll cat, we’ve had cats in the past & had no issues, however, i noticed my 6 year old developed itchy eyes, tight chest, hives & cough …. i never realised that it was possibly the cat until we went away for a week & her symptoms disappeared :(. she has no other allergies so this has really came out of the blue but now she requires a blue asthma inhaler & been diagnosed with asthma which dr believes is allergy related.

anyway .. we tried everything possible to
limit a reaction… cat staying out of her room, hoovering, daily antihistamine .. & nothing changed actually she was getting worse! as a rag doll she’s an inside cat so couldn’t even let her out most of the day!

after trying everything we decided to rehome her, thankfully a family friend wanted her …. she’s only been there 3 days & she wants to bring her back!!! saying she’s hiding won’t come out biting scratching won’t eat much but to me i think she’s not giving her enough time & also forcing herself on the cat & needs to adjust her expectations!

family friend was very aware that cat wasn’t very affectionate they met a few times prior to rehoming & she has much experience owning cats so i’m a bit flabbergasted!

am i unreasonable in saying i cannot have her back? my daughter is at risk of asthma attack & dr said with increased exposure to cat this risk increases….. but i also feel sorry for the cat

what can i do???!

Don’t take the cat back into your home - that is not fair on your daughter it could trigger an asthma attack.

If you feel you have to collect the cat do so but take it straight to a rescue centre or vet and explain but please, please do not risk taking it into your home - asthma attacks can be fatal and your child is the priority here.
Alternatively let them take the cat to a vet - no vet would pts a healthy kitten so call their bluff

liveforsummer · 14/08/2022 09:53

OP said they bought a cat not a kitten so I'm not sure the breeder is on the scene?

Ah I misread that.

Definitely breed specific rescue then.

unknown88x · 14/08/2022 09:55

they have a rag doll cat already so how am i irresponsible exactly - you can only take people at face value!!! plus their other cat is well looked after etc & they have experience with the breed?

liveforsummer · 14/08/2022 09:55

Oh god it gets worse . You didn't rehome the cat, you sold it. No wonder you chose that route over a rescue who wound have carefully vetted homes and been responsible of it failed

WhatAboutTheDesk · 14/08/2022 09:55

unknown88x · 14/08/2022 09:53

yes 200 pound & they want a refund

If they paid it’s their cat now . Their cat their problem I bet it was all great when they thought they were getting a rag doll so cheap

PurpleWisteria · 14/08/2022 09:58

Say they will have to rehome. It's their cat now and you cannot risk your child's health.

Then don't engage. Cheeky fuckers.

@ChiefPearlClutcher sorry but this is a bit rude? rspca recommend rehoming to a person you know so you can have checks etc… keep in context & know the persons character etc .. uncalled for.

But your checks on this person didn't help, did they? And now you're unwilling to take any responsibility that it's gone wrong.

I think Ragdoll Rescue, as linked above, is your best best. But in the mean time, bring the poor cat home and deal with it properly.

unknown88x · 14/08/2022 10:00

@liveforsummer this is very presumptuous? it is still rehoming whether their was a fee involved etc …. the cat was extremely expensive she’s a pedigree rag doll …. they wanted another rag doll.. i know them, they have experience, they wanted to pay something for her plus all her things! what’s the issue here? it’s not turned out as planned no but i thought i was doing the right thing..

OP can’t bring the cat home it could make her dd seriously Ill

If it was a tv that had broken after sake I'd agree but this is a living animal and if I was OP I'd feel responsible for its welfare. They made a bad call by preferring the cash over a rescue where they'd get nothing.

loves2plan · 14/08/2022 10:01

@LittleGreenBeetle she barely did any 'checks' though did she 😂 she sold it to whoever was willing to pay for a pretty instagramable little kitty.

Op, take it to a rescue and get it rehomed by people who know what they're doing and actually care.

You sold the cat. Ffs. What the fuck is wrong with some people? Fucking vile.

unknown88x · 14/08/2022 10:02

@LittleGreenBeetle whoever?? i know these people, they have a rag doll .. £200 barely coveted any of her belongings which were provided …. this is a story you’ve made up to suit your agenda … take your s**t comments elsewhere i feel bad enough

Fatarseflanagan09 · 14/08/2022 10:02

I wouldn’t let her have the cat back anyway, she obviously doesn’t care about it, I’d take it to a re homing center, poor little bleeder.

SuperCamp · 14/08/2022 10:03
  1. leaving a screenshot with 2 first names in it is outing and I think it needs taking down
  2. You muddied the waters by selling the cat rather than ‘re-homing’ . You turned them into customers, not new-homers
  3. It hasn’t worked, so for the sake of the cat you need to find a new knowledgeable and experienced home asap. And give them the £200 back.

OP in your position of course you would have thought they’d be ideal owners for this cat as they have experience. You weren’t to know this would happen.

You’ve done the correct thing - carry on putting your dd first. Don’t risk her health - asthma is very serious.
Tell them it’s their cat and they need to find a solution they are looking for the east way out after thinking they had a good deal getting a pedigree cheaply now they are being like this. Stick to your guns

liveforsummer · 14/08/2022 10:05

Tell them it’s their cat and they need to find a solution

They've already stated their solution. Not before the poor cat is distressed even more by them constantly harassing it. What a horrible outcome for this poor cat. Maybe you could wash your hands of it but I couldn't. Although I'd never have sold it just because it was 'an expensive cat' in the first place.

ladydimitrescu · 14/08/2022 10:06

Oh ffs.
You sold the poor thing like some second hand property rather than rehome responsibly.
When you "re home" an animal, it's your responsibility to ensure all is well, so you need to get the cat back. Your DD managed 6 months, I'm sure she will be fine until you actually find a suitable home for the poor cat.

Ps - if your dd still needs an inhaler, I would look at other causes of her allergies. Allergy induced asthma is usually reversible. It's very rare that it would cause chronic asthma permanently if the root cause is removed.

Toomanybooks22 · 14/08/2022 10:06

Posts saying that the OP should just wash their hands of the cat are really unpleasant and lacking empathy with the poor creature this is a living animal with welfare needs, surely it can be collected and taken to RSPCA / Cats protection / breed specific charity?

FiveShelties · 14/08/2022 10:06

Poor cat, please take it to a rescue centre and let it be rehomed properly. Don't let them have it put down, that would be awful.

NeedMoreMilk · 14/08/2022 10:06

Morally you do need to go and get the cat/arrange for the cat to be put somewhere safe until a permanent home can be found. Then I would be seriously rethinking this friendship.

I don’t think you’ve done anything wrong by rehoming her privately though, as it’s to someone you know. If their other cat (of the same breed!) is well looked after you had no reason to think they’d be so crap with this one. And at least by asking them to pay for her it saves them agreeing to have her on a complete whim.

unknown88x · 14/08/2022 10:06

noted - i’ve asked for it taking down

So refund her, take the belongings back and sell those.

blueblueelectricblue28 · 14/08/2022 10:07

How on earth do a cats “belongings” cost over £200? Mental

Selttan · 14/08/2022 10:07

That poor cat! You really need to take the cat back and go through a rescue.

This is why rescues have trial periods - where I rescued mine offered a two week trial and if you found it didn't work you were refunded less an admin fee.

For the sake of the cat just refund them and take the cat to a rescue.
