hi all,

looking for some advice please …. so a few months ago we bought a rag doll cat, we’ve had cats in the past & had no issues, however, i noticed my 6 year old developed itchy eyes, tight chest, hives & cough …. i never realised that it was possibly the cat until we went away for a week & her symptoms disappeared :(. she has no other allergies so this has really came out of the blue but now she requires a blue asthma inhaler & been diagnosed with asthma which dr believes is allergy related.

anyway .. we tried everything possible to
limit a reaction… cat staying out of her room, hoovering, daily antihistamine .. & nothing changed actually she was getting worse! as a rag doll she’s an inside cat so couldn’t even let her out most of the day!

after trying everything we decided to rehome her, thankfully a family friend wanted her …. she’s only been there 3 days & she wants to bring her back!!! saying she’s hiding won’t come out biting scratching won’t eat much but to me i think she’s not giving her enough time & also forcing herself on the cat & needs to adjust her expectations!

family friend was very aware that cat wasn’t very affectionate they met a few times prior to rehoming & she has much experience owning cats so i’m a bit flabbergasted!

am i unreasonable in saying i cannot have her back? my daughter is at risk of asthma attack & dr said with increased exposure to cat this risk increases….. but i also feel sorry for the cat

what can i do???!

I have ragamuffins they are very affectionate but also quite sensitive cats so likely this has all been quite traumatic for the poor cat, ours hid under the couch for sometime only coming out for food till he settled and then was amazing your friends clearly just want a pretty cat, if your child is asthmatic a long haired cat like rag dolls are not ideal at all even now having it in the house until you find a home for it it’ll be getting hair etc all over.

my breeder for our cat was absolutely amazing she’d have taken them back no problem so not sure where you got this animal from but hope you find it a suitable forever home - there is a rag doll rescue you can try? I’d absolutely go through a rescue who can properly rehome to a family who are used to the breed and can integrate it properly into their family

OP has already gone to collect the cat!

Just because she’s gone to collect the cat doesn’t mean she’s acted responsibly.

Had she bought responsibly originally, the breeder would take the cat back.

If it was purely about a good home for the cat, she wouldn’t have sold it. Also, having bought from a decent breeder, she wouldn’t have been allowed to sell the cat.

Answer:

There are a few things that you can do if your daughter is allergic to cats. First, you can try to keep your cat out of the house as much as possible. If that's not possible, you can try to keep your daughter away from the cat, and make sure she washes her hands and face after playing with or petting the cat. You can also talk to your doctor about getting allergy shots or taking antihistamines to help reduce the symptoms of an allergic reaction.
