woman wants to return cat?

hi all,

looking for some advice please …. so a few months ago we bought a rag doll cat, we’ve had cats in the past & had no issues, however, i noticed my 6 year old developed itchy eyes, tight chest, hives & cough …. i never realised that it was possibly the cat until we went away for a week & her symptoms disappeared :(. she has no other allergies so this has really came out of the blue but now she requires a blue asthma inhaler & been diagnosed with asthma which dr believes is allergy related.

anyway .. we tried everything possible to
limit a reaction… cat staying out of her room, hoovering, daily antihistamine .. & nothing changed actually she was getting worse! as a rag doll she’s an inside cat so couldn’t even let her out most of the day!

after trying everything we decided to rehome her, thankfully a family friend wanted her …. she’s only been there 3 days & she wants to bring her back!!! saying she’s hiding won’t come out biting scratching won’t eat much but to me i think she’s not giving her enough time & also forcing herself on the cat & needs to adjust her expectations!

family friend was very aware that cat wasn’t very affectionate they met a few times prior to rehoming & she has much experience owning cats so i’m a bit flabbergasted!

am i unreasonable in saying i cannot have her back? my daughter is at risk of asthma attack & dr said with increased exposure to cat this risk increases….. but i also feel sorry for the cat

what can i do???!

Put all the drama to one side. These people are not giving the cat a good home. If you care about the welfare of the cat, give them the money and get the cat back.
Pass it on to a decent rescue. If you cannot have it home, book it into a cattery until you sort it out.
The attitude of 'their cat now, their problem ' is really mean. Poor cat has been uprooted and hasn't settled and new owners are threatening to have it put down. They're vile. Come on, do the decent thing. This is a living animal not an inconvenient toy or accessory.

WhatAboutTheDesk · 14/08/2022 10:09

OP didn’t just sell to some random on gumtree !!!!! A friend who was already experienced with the breed and tbh the £200 sounds like it just covered the expense of the cats things ? OP probably hoped she could still hear how the cat was doing etc this just sounds to me like someone trying to do their best in a crappy situation putting their unwell child first not some uncaring animal seller !

CravenRaven · 14/08/2022 10:09

Give them their money back.
Take the cat back.
Surrender it to a charity.

You took responsibility for this cat when bought it. If you cannot keep the car then you still have a responsibility to do right by it.

And seriously no vet will put down a healthy pedigree cat just because it’s scratched someone’s hand !

@LittleGreenBeetle whoever?? i know these people, they have a rag doll .. £200 barely coveted any of her belongings which were provided …. this is a story you’ve made up to suit your agenda … take your s**t comments elsewhere i feel bad enough

Not so bad that you actually care about doing what is right for this cat

Could the cat stay with your mum instead or your dd as of the cat is in the house again it will likely cause her problems with her allergy again once she returns home ?

@loves2plan have you actually read my last post?

How on earth do a cats “belongings” cost over £200? Mental

My sons cats belongings have probably cost about 2k so far and they are only 7 months old , granted 1.3k was the large catio but they have a moccasin cat bed from the USA that cost a couple of hundred pounds . That aside if you are responsibly giving a cat to friends you don’t charge them anything . Take the cat back and shut it in one room at your house that your daughter doesn’t go in and then rehome her properly preferably through a breed specific rescue .

Floralnomad · 14/08/2022 10:14

X post - well done @unknown88x . A breed rescue will likely have homes ready so you should be able to get rid quickly

I hope you find a good rescue who will ensure she is rehomed to a lovely new home who will care for her forever.

BorderlineObsessedWithYou · 14/08/2022 10:16

Better late than never. Hopefully the cat will find responsible humans this time.

It might be worth then once the cat is gone to let dd stay a couple extra days with your mum so that you can air the house / wash soft furnishings etc etc and she may need antihistamines the first few days on returning home. I have a severe cat allergy that has hospitalised me twice as it triggered severe asthma attacks so it’s probably a good idea to try to clean as much as you can before she gets home.

Sorry you’ve had such a hard time it’s obvious you’re a caring person trying to do their best I hope it all works out ok Flowers

Well, they're clearly not real cat lovers if they can consider having a cat put to sleep for the "crime" of biting and scratching someone's hand when it's just been newly rehomed and is probably terrified. They sound horrible.

It's clear that you don't want it, and they don't want it either. Would you rather they put it to sleep? Because that's the threat here. Do you not feel sad that a pet which you loved(?) and looked after for a period may be killed because no one wants it? I can't dress this up in a nicer way.

Surely ALL parties can see that this is not a good outcome? - but it's a possibility of leaving it where it is (though I hope that no vet would agree to put a healthy cat down).

But in the mean time, be a grown up and take some responsibility for this poor animal and make some arrangements for it to go elsewhere, if need be, to a foster home until you can make a proper long term plan or get it taken in by a shelter.

Poor cat.

You’ve been hugely irresponsible here and are now dealing with the consequences.

I have pedigree Ragdolls and signed a contract with the breeder to say if I ever needed to rehome them, they had to be returned to the breeder. Do you have an agreement in place with the breeder? I’ve never seen a responsible breeder not have this in their terms and conditions.

mcmooberry · 14/08/2022 10:22

I agree the woman isn't really giving the cat a chance, she is probably petrified and she (friend) doesn't need to be getting so close to her (cat) that she's getting bitten and scratched!

Hope you find a more sensible long term new home for her soon x

TemperTrap · 14/08/2022 10:25

@unknown88x how old is the cat and have you contacted their breeder?
I know with dogs the puppy contract usually states they must be returned to the breeder rather than rehomed.

GrazingSheep · 14/08/2022 10:25

It’s good you are taking the cat back.
Did you buy it from a reputable breeder who will take it back? Rather than place it with a rescue.

TheManSellsFish · 14/08/2022 10:30

loves2plan · 14/08/2022 10:01

@LittleGreenBeetle she barely did any 'checks' though did she 😂 she sold it to whoever was willing to pay for a pretty instagramable little kitty.

Op, take it to a rescue and get it rehomed by people who know what they're doing and actually care.

Some people need to get out of the heat.

sunsetsandsandybeaches · 14/08/2022 10:35

unknown88x · 14/08/2022 09:53

yes 200 pound & they want a refund

This is why you don't sell animals privately over the internet Angry

If your daughter is allergic then you rehome the cat via a rescue centre!

liveforsummer · 14/08/2022 10:36

The question about the breeder has already been asked and ignored several times by the OP. In the OP itself she mentioned she bought a cat not a kitten. I assumed at the time that was a Mia type but now not so sure?!

LovelyLovelyWarmCoffee · 14/08/2022 10:47

Very kindly, how was that a « horrible life lesson » ? You are back to the same situation you were 3 days ago, that’s it, or am I missing something?

If your friend had waited weeks/months it might have been less clear cut, but 3 days…
