What's the most revolting thing you have had to do for your pet? Can you top mine?

DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE EATING!

Our cat has an abcess on her back due to an infected bite. The vet 'popped' it and about half a mugfull of gunk came out

It was absolutely the worst thing I have ever smelt in my life, a cross between fishy cat breath and really bad poo

We now have to wrestle with the cat to get anti-b capsules down his throat daily, but the worst bit - we have to pick the scab off the abcess and squeeze all the ick out about 4 times a day!

I'm torn between feeling really sorry for the poor cat as it can't be nice at all, and feelings of complete repulsion at what we have to do. I'm not normally squeamish but this really has me retching

I know, I know, I'm being pathetic and it could be worse and I should just get on with it!

Has anyone had to do this before? How long until it healed?

ooh, gross. The worst thing I've ever had to do was to try to get my terrified 35lb dog with sharp claws into the bathtub when I was 8 months pregnant because he had rolled in dead fish.

DUSTIN · 08/03/2007 13:21

Try emptying your dog's anal glands- lovely!!!!

dejags · 08/03/2007 13:23

OMG. That is so disgusting Yorkshirelass.

I thought the time both of my cats had the runs in their cat basket on the way home from the cattery and having to bath them when we got home to get rid of the all encompassing poo was bad - but you win.

happystory · 08/03/2007 13:24

I'm with Dustin, had to do the dog's anal glands- luvvverly way to spend a Sunday

Bucketsofdynomite · 08/03/2007 13:25

My mum used to have regularly vaseline her finger up to sort out an 'impacted' guinea pig.

Y0rkshirelass · 08/03/2007 13:28

There's such a thing as a anal gland??

You have to empty them???

A few occasions one or other of my cats has eaten something stringy. It has only passed part of said-stringy item... I suspect you can tell where I'm going with this so I'll stop there.

Iota · 08/03/2007 13:31

My cat gets an abcess on average twice a year - been there, done that, got the T shirt made the TV series

BTW it wont scab over if you are cleaning it 4 times a day, so you won't have to pull the scab off

and agree that anal glands are worse

fennel · 08/03/2007 13:32

I can top these

Our dog ate used tampons which came up in the drain in the back yard due to faulty plumbing. We had to help pull them out of the dog's bum when he tried to squat in the street to pass them out.

Winestein · 08/03/2007 13:32

My cat had an abcess on his cheek and I had made an appointment at the vets for when I got home from work. When I got in from work to collect the cat, the cat was looking back at me with half of his face missing and there was a vile stench in the air.
My DP had for some reason taken it upon himself to trim all the cat's fur away on his face and burst the abcess and cleaned it all out with salt water. Worse to come..... the cat was so grateful he kept rubbing his cheek on my partners leg. Or rather, the hole where his cheek was. Arghhh!

The cat got another abcess when I was pregnant. There was a bit of a strange smell around the cat's neck area so I squeezed and prodded and this huge pussy abcess oozed all over my hand. Took him to the vets for an antibiotic and he squeezed it and this huge jet of bloody pus shot out onto both of us.

And DP does the anal glands on the dog too.

Gross enough yet?

Winestein · 08/03/2007 13:34

fennel

Just reminded me of another one - DP has very long hair, and when the dog passes one you often see him in the garden with a piece of poo swinging around merrily, attached to his bottom. On go the marigolds.....

Incodnito · 08/03/2007 13:37

Fennel, that is so so disgusting.

Puke at all these stories, but i have had to do worse to humans

Iota · 08/03/2007 13:39

Weinstein - dp has very long hair????

DUSTIN · 08/03/2007 13:41

OMG Incodnito- what things do you have to do to humans that's worse??

MamaG · 08/03/2007 13:42

I regularly wipe the end of my labrador's cock with a baby wipe, due to there often being a small white blob there - he once shook himself, said small white blob flew across the room and landed in DH's cup of tea

I am a nurse, the things i have seen and the things i have had to do you wouldnt want to, will say no more

Gingerbear · 08/03/2007 13:47

My worst moment must be pulling a length of yellow/green earth wire out of dog's bum.
NOTHING compared to some of these though.

harpsichordcarrier · 08/03/2007 13:51

I once had to pick a whole load of squishy poo and maggots off a rabbit's bottom. it took hours and they had burrowed into the flesh
grim but not as grim as some it seems

Winestein · 08/03/2007 13:53

Iota - yes It was about 3 feet long but is only about 2 now. Takes some hauling out, I can tell you!

Winestein · 08/03/2007 13:54

Ewww, that's flystrike isn't it Harpsi? Yak.

harpsichordcarrier · 08/03/2007 13:57

yep fly strike
bad news if you don't like maggots
big bad news for the bunny

This thread is making me feel ill....

ROFL at Mama G's story.

OrlandoTheMarmaladeCat · 08/03/2007 14:01

I agree with the anal glands, one of our lurchers needs his 'done' regularly, and it is quite the most revolting thing ever.

Funnily enough one of the cats has an abcess at the moment and it really doesn't bother me. The children run screaming from the room, holding their noses but I'm fine.

I once had a horse who had torn part of her hoof wall off, she had to wear a poultice on it which I had to change twice a day and clean all the pus and blood out of it. So imagine this - big scaredy-cat horse standing on three legs, 'waving' poorly leg around at me whilst gnawing at my hair/ears/head/shoulders. Lovely it was.
