What's the most revolting thing you have had to do for your pet? Can you top mine?

DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE EATING!

Our cat has an abcess on her back due to an infected bite. The vet 'popped' it and about half a mugfull of gunk came out

It was absolutely the worst thing I have ever smelt in my life, a cross between fishy cat breath and really bad poo

We now have to wrestle with the cat to get anti-b capsules down his throat daily, but the worst bit - we have to pick the scab off the abcess and squeeze all the ick out about 4 times a day!

I'm torn between feeling really sorry for the poor cat as it can't be nice at all, and feelings of complete repulsion at what we have to do. I'm not normally squeamish but this really has me retching

I know, I know, I'm being pathetic and it could be worse and I should just get on with it!

Has anyone had to do this before? How long until it healed?

We had to 'express' our dogs anal glands a few times. Also our cat had an abcess on her tail, just like you describe, pus - o - rama, hardly had to touch it and it just kept coming out.

I once got trapped in the bathroom of our old flat with a cat with the squits. She'd eaten a whole bar of white chocolate and I was trying to get her to her dirt box, she did it by the door which I couldn't open until I'd cleaned it up.

smellyjelly just a few days, we have to take him back to the vet's tomorrow afternoon to see how the de-gunking is going.

The worse this is he keeps licking the flippin thing!

Urgh... so glad we don't have pets. I never knew about cats and their absesses. I've only coped with dogs' anal glands and washing of geldings willies in the past.

OrlandoTheMarmaladeCat · 08/03/2007 14:13

Ooh yes, washing flakey willies - that's a good fun job too

This thread is reminding me of my late lamented dog, who had terrible vet-phobia.

Once the vet was trying to squeeze his anal glands and the dog wriggled and anal gland juice shot all over the surgery... all over the dog, my shoes, the table, the walls and the ceiling. It was GROSS and the smell was in my nostrils for days afterwards.

Worse still, when the same dog was VERY old and doddery he became quite incontinent. Went to the vets to get him checked out for something and he got scared and lost control of his bowels and managed to projectile poo across the surgery, landing a lump in the vet's hair! I wanted to die. It wouldn't have been so bad, but she had already told me that we were the last appointment of the day and she was going to some swish vets' dinner straight after work. Ugh ugh ugh....!

And wasn't there a thread about washing your gelding's sheath a couple of weeks ago? That's pretty gross too. (I remember as a kid having to put purple spray on one pony's sheath... can't imagine what for. I don't think it was ever explained to me. Must've been about 9 at the time!)

Winestein - I think I misunderstood your post about dp's hair - I presume that the dog is eating dp's hair?

(thought you meant that the dog had long hair)

Y0rkshirelass · 08/03/2007 14:31

LOL @ projectile poo!!

inanidealworld · 08/03/2007 14:48

One year on my birthday, I got out of bed for a wee. Was sitting on the loo half asleep and our (then) kitten jumped up to sit on my lap just as I was getting up. He missed and fell in! And I hadn't flushed yet! Had to reach in and fish him out. Not a good start to the day!

Ceolas · 08/03/2007 14:53

Holy cow

I am so glad we just have a goldfish.

These are disgusting stories.

inanidealworld · 08/03/2007 14:53

This thread is hilarious!

Iota · 08/03/2007 14:54

Ceolas - you mean that you've never had to clean out the goldfish's anal glands??

inanidealworld · 08/03/2007 14:56

Why are all your cats getting so many abscesses?

Iota · 08/03/2007 14:57

because they fight and the bite goes septic

LadyOfTheFlowers · 08/03/2007 14:58

had to pull the chewd up crotch of my latest favourite pair of knickers from the dog's bum hole.
she had chewed my smalls up, eated the gusset and had tried to 'pass' them but they got stuck half way out- serves her right!
lol

Ceolas · 08/03/2007 14:58

Thankfully not iota.

Stupidly just googled dogs anal glands...

LadyOfTheFlowers · 08/03/2007 14:58

excuse typos! baby on lap.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 08/03/2007 14:59

ooooh, bad move! lol

Y0rkshirelass · 08/03/2007 15:00

I still can't get over the fact people have to empty anal glands.
You must really love your dog!

Y0rkshirelass · 08/03/2007 15:01

ew, Ceolas, you don't want to google things like that!!

Rofl at these! I'd pay the vet any amount of money rather than have to squeeze our dog's anal glands. Though I do have more sympathy with the dog since I got an infection in a bartholin gland from sitting on the saddle of ds's racing bike.

A friend had to remove her dog's lead from its rear end when they were out walking one day. She's wondered where it had gone to but wish it hadn't reappeared while they had guests staying.

And not a pet story but another friend has a sister who farms. They were at the farm one day when friend's 2yo nephew wandered by with a bottle in his mouth. Friend said to her sis 'I though X didn't have bottles any more?' at which sis looked, froze and then shrieked 'Arrrrghhhh! He's drinking the pig semen!!!!'
