Have to find a home for my old lady

I'm absolutely devastated. Had my cat since she was 8 weeks old. She is now approx 14/15. She's a house cat who is scared of children thanks to my Ds chasing her. We are moving house in a few weeks and no pets allowed. I'm gutted I can't keep her. We have been trying to search for some where that can take her and rehome her but having no luck. Don't want to just advertise on social media incase I make the wrong decision and send her somewhere horrid! I wold prefer her to go to a rescue so they could take care in rehoming her. Any ideas of places that do this? We are in the northwest.

Reality, comment what you like, I just don't like to see people kicked why they're down. OPs first line was I'm devastated.. yet people saw fit to call her disgusting, her mum a selfish awful human? erm, why have you used my name here? I haven't called the OP disgusting, neither have I even commented on her mum, let alone in a bad way Confused

HalfwayToFifty · 28/01/2017 11:21

I can't bloody win. Selfish for pts selfish for rehoming. What if she had a lovely life in a lovely home with a lovely lady/man she's anywhere between the age of 13-15. I think 15 as im sure it was before high school, the vet said there system may be wrong, I could maybe say for definite if she was in the last year or 2 of life but she may have a good few years ahead of her yet. Why would I deny her the chance to at least TRY and have a happy life with someone. I plan on asking the vet how they, an actual professional, thinks it may affect her , depending on health ect.

My apologies reality I got you mixed up with another poster. Sorry.

Reality16 · 28/01/2017 11:28

I can't bloody win. Selfish for pts selfish for rehoming first off I never said anything was selfish. I am looking from the outside in and the KINDER option without a doubt where an illness is involved would be PTS. It is also the option I would CONSIDER if rehoming was going to involve rescue centre. That would mean potentially 2 moves for the old girl, that's not fair. Rehoming would be ideal if you knew someone who could take her and she is in full health. But any other way PTS would be better. There is nothing wrong with having a pet PTS. certainly in an old cat that you need to rehome PTS would be much kinder than any treatment for a potential illness.

Reality16 · 28/01/2017 11:29

No probs wine

HalfwayToFifty · 28/01/2017 11:37

When I spoke to the vet they had some numbers for people who take older cats. Do you think it's rescue to home that would be stressful? Do you think she may be ok if she went straight to a lovely home? All she wants is to sleep and eat, it's all she ever done, she isn't interested in toy mice or feathers on a string. And run up and down the hall like a heard of elephants on the odd occasion. I want to do what's best for her, in this case it can't be staying with us and I hate it I really do. If the option is a new home, I want her to have a lovely home, this is why I wanted advice.

Can you just demand a vet put your animal to sleep when there is no medical reason?

JanuaryMoods you do realise that's not a legal reason to evict? It doesn't matter who in your family is allergic to cats, you don't live there. You song sound very professional

Reality16 · 28/01/2017 11:44

Can you just demand a vet put your animal to sleep when there is no medical reason. No you can't demand. You can discuss though. Often vets are happy to PTS rather see an animal end up in a bad situation. I had my horse PTS last year and I simply called and said I wanted him PTS. Get dint even ask why, just came out and did the job. When it was my old dog a few years back I chatted to the vet about the options, they were in agreement that 2 options were possibilities, and were happy to PTS Shen I chose that option.

Reality16 · 28/01/2017 11:46

Do you think she may be ok if she went straight to a lovely home? yes. One change of home is going to be much easier than being in a rescue centre then moved again.

Caprianna · 28/01/2017 11:46

Isn't this your mum's cat? Surely if you get a pet when your child is 10, then its your responsibility and not your child. So many irresponsible pet owners.

Purplehonesty · 28/01/2017 11:48

Was the woman in Cheshire who offered to take older cats not able to help?
She can come and live here if you are prepared to drive her up to Scotland?

sofiainwonderland · 28/01/2017 11:49

So your cat was gifted to you when you were 10, she was 8 weeks old, you're 25 now but the cat is 13, not 15... ooookay.

I do understand your frustration regarding your children vs the cat but the cat should be a family member by now!!! For ages, actually.

I would have found a solution no matter what for my dog....

Trainspotting1984 · 28/01/2017 11:50

Thanks reality

passmethewineplease · 28/01/2017 11:51

I'd really look in to sunflowers offer. Would be much better than going to a rescue.

HalfwayToFifty · 28/01/2017 11:58

I think at the age of 10 it's is the responsibility of the adult. At that age I was in no way able to have the sole responsibility of a pet. I could just about manage my fish at that age. My Ds is 4 he has fish. I clean them, I feed them. I would never buy him a larger pet such as a cat or dog. I would buy a family pet but not one specifically for him.
I'm going to leave the thread and get her nice and calm and snuggle her before the vets. I will come and let you know what they say. I apologise for my rudeness I just feel stressed at the situation and racking my brains for ways around this, being criticised wasn't helping. I appreciate that most of you are avid pet lovers and I'm probably a despicable human being to you. Despite what you may think I love this cat and want to find her a lovely home. I will forever think about her. The last few nights I've cuddled her and cried. I really do wish we had the option to take her to our new house. I thought by now my mum would have given in and agreed to keep her. My mum thinks due to her always having good health she will out live us all. It wouldn't surprise me.

HalfwayToFifty · 28/01/2017 12:01

I thought I was 10. The vets think I'm right and there system could be wrong from when she was neutered. As she was a house cat that was a few years down the line and could have been confusion about age from my mum. I definatly had her before going to high school so aged 10/11ish no older definatly no younger.

Plenty of reasonable advice re rehoming, and an actual offer from a person in the NE.

We understand your big issue is your housing, you are trying to sort it out.

However you do not pts the cat. As very many people have stated (and given links to websites) your cat could move from being with you straight into another home.

It's really not complicated, just time consuming. Get on with it.

YouHadMeAtCake · 28/01/2017 12:19

I agree with Beverleygoldberg VIvienne is spot on , and other PP. really OP, don't make it out like it has to be a choice of your children or your poor cat! You chose a home with a no pets policy, You have not even tried to keep her and you let a four year old chase a cat?! Why do you let that happen?! Your child clearly needs discipline. Four is old enough to know better.

I have lived all over the world and have ALWAYS taken my pets with me , dogs and cats. You have no decent excuses ,you are just selfish. I am disgusted by your attitude. Shame on you.

YouHadMeAtCake · 28/01/2017 12:25

Forgot to add, your attitude and rudeness to pp is terrible. Telling people, they shouldn't be parents?! You really do not sound like a very nice person. Neither does your mother. Poor cat.

JanuaryMoods · 28/01/2017 19:28

JanuaryMoods you do realise that's not a legal reason to evict?

Bollocks. It's in the contract that they signed. I think our solicitor knows better than you, random internet person. No cats in my house or you're out. Full stop.

OP, hide this thread. The "cats before people" mob will hang you out to dry. Normal people know you are in the right. Those writing with green crayon are best ignored.

LynetteScavo · 28/01/2017 19:42

Gosh, there are some nasty posts in this thread!

As someone who has rented with cats I can tell you it's not easy to find pet loving landlords.

You're doing the right thing OP. I hope you can find someone who will be able to have her.

I was once given a hard time on MN for saying I would rescue my DC before my cats from a house fire. Some of you are right nutters

FlissMumsnet · 28/01/2017 19:58

Massive thanks to all those who have supported the OP, we will be deleting posts reported to us which break our TGs.

Peace and love. Please? It's the weekend.... Wine

HalfwayToFifty · 28/01/2017 20:01

The vet was very pleased with her. She has a goiter? In her neck but doesn't require treatment. He's sent her details to a lady he knows who loves cats. He said he's doing it as a favour as he could actually see how upset I was. And he understood the circumstances, he understands LL are quite particular about pets. My mother has said she won't let it come to pts. I don't think she realised how much it was upsetting me until we were in the vets.

Can I just say how much I love the last 2 posters, Lynette & January 😂 finally people with some sense

GatoradeMeBitch · 29/01/2017 12:24

I agree that having an elderly cat PTS is much kinder the. The trauma of ending up In a rescue with a minor possibility of being uprooted yet again. Think hard about the cats welfare

Can I just say that I foster cats, and elderly cats are well capable of adjusting and enjoying a change of life? They don't bounce back as easily as young cats, but there's no more reason an elderly and relatively healthy cat should be killed than an elderly and relatively healthy person (my branch of CP is run very successfully by people who match that description!)

And not that it matters now, but if you have a cat whose litter tray aim isn't good, consider getting one with a cover.

I hope everything works out OP Smile
