It was also in Labour's manifesto.

Reducing the welfare state? Or reducing the private sector?

Beekeepingmum · 24/11/2024 10:09

Nina9870 · 24/11/2024 10:05

food security is definitely under threat, but more so due to climate change. Record numbers of crop failures this year alone. If food security is your concern, you need to look at candidates/ parties with a robust climate change policy. None of the main parties have these

Food security is no more under threat now than it was before. So little food comes from the UK - the biggest threat to the supply of food was Brexit and no-one was fussed then. In reality people want cheap food. No-one is campaigning to force the supermarkets to pay the farmers properly.

Kool4katz · 24/11/2024 10:09

Ah bless. They’ve got a billion miles to go before this government fails the economy as badly as loathesome Liz. 😂😂

Reducing the welfare state? Or reducing the private sector?

To be fair, Reeves was really clear that Labour was not the party for the unemployed. She's been saying it for almost a decade. Plenty of fair warning there

EasternStandard · 24/11/2024 10:10

You can see by many posters on here…they are. Shrink the private sector then the welfare and public sector will follow. As night follows day.

@Aduvetday has got it.

As for this petition it'll get more pick up than writing to local MPs, if the press go with it it's not great for Starmer. It likely won't do much rn other than batter polling further.

But I doubt he's totally immune to sentiment, including at PMQs

If they keep shrinking the private sector and no growth let's see in a year. It won't be happy with lower spending

Figgygal · 24/11/2024 10:11

Where were the petitions and outrage while the tories decimated this country and lined the pockets of their mates for years. How about when they literally killed people through covid with their ineptitude?

They probably existed but went nowhere like this one quite rightly will.

I'm not a labour supporter But I'd rather them in charge than the other lot

100% but people haven’t been paying attention because VAT on school fees and so on…

genesis92 · 24/11/2024 10:12

Unfortunately we need to just let them hang themselves over the next 5 years. They are doing a sterling job already, quicker than I believed possible.

Just a shame that 5 years is such a long time and they'll certainly do irrevocable damage in that time. We need to stay democratic, they got voted in cause of how awful the Tories had been. It is what it is now.

Maurepas · 24/11/2024 10:14

I was talking about the white paper. It was in the manifesto that they would be looking at ways to get more people into work.

They are as woeful as I thought but it's still democratic to push for a GE and have one early

Not yet but people may increase calls over next couple of years

France and Germany have had or will have early GEs it's still the democratic process

This, exactly!
I did want the tory government gone for ages before the elections, but had to wait.
Now is the other side's turn to wait.
I may remind you that Labour won with a really good margin, so there is no point to the tantrums.

Then you should start a petition for shorter parliamentary terms.

Yep and that’s an issue in itself with a private sector now shrinking and huge job losses predicted due to the budget. I think people who voted Labour - as can be seen on this thread - thinking they’d support them as long term claimants: are in for an almighty wake up call.

ByMerryKoala · 24/11/2024 10:17

I'm, ever the optimist, hopeful that they improve. This level of discontent at the beginning of a term is a bloody tinderbox. By the time they're done, I expect we'll see a knee jerk reaction to a party that makes the Tories look cute and fluffy.

Beekeepingmum · 24/11/2024 10:17

Nothing changes overnight. They need to be assessed in 5 years when we have the next election. The tax changes so far have only really reversed Sunak's "vote for me" tax giveaway last year. The farmer piece will get sorted in the detail. I don't know if it will work or not but I don't think we need popularist every decision needs to be popular - too many many claim to be conservative whilst wanting lots of public services, or claim to be Labour but want low taxes - then expect efficiency to be the answer (when efficiency often means don't do the services I don't need).

EasternStandard · 24/11/2024 10:18

Or the public can put pressure on to see an early GE

It's not undemocratic see France and Germany

Maurepas · 24/11/2024 10:20

Nearly half a million sign now! Means something!

Caselgarcia · 24/11/2024 10:22

We vote for a Labour Government every few years to remind ourselves why we shouldn't vote for them.

Meant something, but all that happened was a debate was held. Which is what may happen here, or there will just be a written response.

Anyone who thinks there will be a GE is going to be disappointed.

ByMerryKoala · 24/11/2024 10:25

I can't imagine things will get better after winter when the real world consequences of the wfa changes are played out through the increased hospital admissions and excess winter deaths and when the increased employers ni increases worklessness further.

Bless, you think labour voters are claimants, you're wrong.

The private sector is going to find it a bit uncomfortable. Paying their own workers rather than getting the state to do it will take an adjustment period.

How Britain voted in the 2024 general election | YouGov

Using a sample of over 35,000 voters, YouGov looks at how voters voted at the 2024 election across factors like age, gender, class, education, income, work status, housing tenure and their vote at past elections

Macron called an early election because there was no clear winner in 2022 and because of the June 24 EP elections, right? I don’t think it was down to a petition.

Same as May called the 2017 election in a (failed) attempt to get a larger majority for brexit changes.

Johnson wanted to break with the FTPA in order to call an election in 2019 because he thought he would win a landslide (which he did) and the Tories then held on until almost the last moment, and after two more changes of leader, to get an almost full term.

Any country which (typically) governs by coalition is more likely than a FPTP country to hold early elections if a coalition isn’t stable.

Or better still, a form of PR so that 35% of the vote does not get 60% or more of the seats in the House of Commons.

https://defrafarming.blog.gov.uk/2024/03/12/grants-available-in-2024/

Quite a few grants mentioned without any date for applying, just a vague Autumn 2024 mentioned, not great for forward planning. All of the above is from when the Conservatives were still in power. It might be worth your friend getting herself a dozen cows or sheep @Meadowfinch
