Or better still, a form of PR so that 35% of the vote does not get 60% or more of the seats in the House of Commons.

Yeah, fair enough. Then it would be a Lab/Lib block or a Tory/Farage block in government, and we would switch between those two instead.

ETA: I say Farage rather than “Reform” to cover whichever party NF is heading at any given moment

EasternStandard · 24/11/2024 10:31

@SheilaFentiman you've reminded me of the times an early GE had happened.

We'll see how it goes over next year or so. Rn Labour are shrinking the private sector that will filter through to the public sector

If they can't turn the shrinking private sector around calls will grow

Aduvetday · 24/11/2024 10:32

Bless, you think labour voters are claimants, you're wrong.
https://yougov.co.uk/politics/articles/49978-how-britain-voted-in-the-2024-general-election

The private sector is going to find it a bit uncomfortable. Paying their own workers rather than getting the state to do it will take an adjustment period.

Ohh tricky. With a shrinking private sector… who is paying for state? Explanations on a postcard…

Kool4katz · 24/11/2024 10:09

Ah bless. They’ve got a billion miles to go before this government fails the economy as badly as loathesome Liz. 😂😂

True, but we got shot of her in 42 days 😃

They happened because of (perceived) advantage to the incumbent government.

They did not happen because of a petition or “calls” for an election.

That's interesting. Which of the changes do you support?

I support the changes to IHT (the numbers impacted will be very able to pay the significantly reduced rate & generous time to pay), the removal of the WFA (the changes to state pension will cover this for those that need). Also agree with the plan for housebuilding. Private schools paying VAT.

It's odd how welfare to the vulnerable was cut so badly in the past 14 yes yet little was said in the RW media, Drs, Nurses, Teachers Public sector worker went on strike and we're called lazy & workshy (Clarkson said we should be executed in front of our families). Yet the rich being asked to pay a little bit more is somehow a tragedy.

“We” didn’t. The Tory MPs did. Just as the Tory MPs got shot of May and of Johnson.

Anonym00se · 24/11/2024 10:37

Are people that dense that they think a petition will overturn our entire democratic constitution?

There were countless similar petitions calling for the Tories to be ousted over the past few years. Every one was rejected. This one will be too.

Edited

The increase in pensions over the year was built in to cover inflationary pressures, not to cover the loss of a benefit. You can't think your sums are more solid than, say, age UK who have detailed the scale of poverty that was engineered by this change?

EasternStandard · 24/11/2024 10:38

@SheilaFentiman it's possible whether Starmer faces the brunt of the public sentiment we'll see

I recall a few pre GE lines 'country before party' and 'we will tread lightly on your lives'

I mean I know it was all lies pretty much but still.

I'm fine to give it longer but I wouldn't be surprised if it gets worse. They can't keep up public sector pay through that amount of tax and spend at £70bn

What happened after the winter of discontent? Will read as a reminder

hattie43 · 24/11/2024 06:04

This government are proving to be totally inept. Liars .
I'm also worried they are so out of step with other countries current thinking .
This is going to be a very long 4 yrs but luckily 4 years is not long enough to do serious damage given how long it takes to get laws passed and infrastructure in place .

You sure?
Not enough to do damage?
These people going on about huge majority etc,
I don't know anyone who voted this bunch of lying audacious comrades in.
Like feral children in a sweet shop.

And they soon will Badenock, who has already been put to shame at PMQs by one of her junior ministers......

Ok, the country was rid of Liz Truss in 50 days.

Small change compared to what the increase in NI has cost us in growth.

There won't be another election, I doubt anyone expects that but if the petition tops a few million by next week, a message will have been sent.

Let's hope they have the sense to listen.

We don’t yet know the impact of NI increase.

The only message it will send is the same one that a general election sent. People have different political views and motives and by signing this petition it’s just a repeat of voting.

FWIW I didn’t sign because I want to give Labour a chance like Conservatives were given.

Yes, there were lots calling for Johnson to go.

I don't think this one should be rejected, though. That'll just cause more frothing. Let it run its course and then issue a written response outlining how the system actually works. Job done.

MrsCarson · 24/11/2024 10:40

It's close to 500,000 now.
I doubt it will trigger and election, but it may well give their heads a wobble.

I doubt the government will give it even a second thought. We are years away from a GE.

Well we do. The private sector has shrunk. Officially.

TPJB · 24/11/2024 10:42

Of course there won't be another election as that goes against democracy, however if it comes to a million plus pissed off people signing it isn't a great look for them.

Summernightsinthe21stcentury · 24/11/2024 10:43

I am pretty sure several million people signed the anti brexit petitions and that got us nowhere, so I am unsure why this one would do anything!

Sethera · 24/11/2024 10:44

There are approx 47,000,000 eligible voters in the UK, so 200,000 signatures doesn't mean much.

Six million!

You can't just ask for another going you don't like the result.

Grow up,
