OMG 4 people voted from Vietnam and 281 from the US. Or did they? VPN anyone?

Isatis · 24/11/2024 09:46

Tell you what, we can have a General Election if, before that, we have another EU referendum.

Reif · 24/11/2024 09:47

It is not a tiny amount. Click on the link and keep scrolling.

Eta, actually you might be right.

Oh well! Sad that so many in the UK don't understand democracy.

It’s less than one percent of the overall amount, so I would class that as tiny, it’s 0.80% of the total vote

Aduvetday · 24/11/2024 09:47

ByMerryKoala · 24/11/2024 09:37

It'll be fine, they've been entirely moderate in their actions and completely willing to listen when they get things wrong 😬

I know right? Sanctions for all.

Those are people using VPN's - you realise LOTS and lots of people use a VPN these days.

🙄

LastTrainsEast · 24/11/2024 09:48

It's not proof either way as others have pointed out since so many people use VPN.

If you don't use it yourself you may not know that it changes your location. Often that's the purpose as people want to access entertainment that is limited to one country.

Aduvetday · 24/11/2024 09:49

.

That anyone with any sense uses a VPN nowadays with the amount of data the net harvests.

Here is a screen shot of some of the petition data, showing where the signatures have come from. I will leave people to draw their own conclusions.

So 53 out of 400,000 are not in the UK. Exclude them then. 😂

405,000 now

CandiedPrincess · 24/11/2024 09:50

In the run up to the GE I actually joined the Labour party, this was the first time I have ever joined a party and I was excited about change and what they could bring.

I've been really disappointed since then, and I do regret my vote. I am also cancelling my membership, and pulling support for the local councillor candidate they wanted me to canvass for, and will be telling them why. I have no faith in this government at all.

That would be funny if it wasn't so frightening for so many people.

Maybe this petition will persuade them to moderate the white paper, at the very least.

Aduvetday · 24/11/2024 07:29

They’ve managed to shrink the private sector with their budget, There is no-one to pay for the big state. It’s a car crash.

This

Honestly it is so horrifying just how far the capacity to talk in an even moderately evidence-based and rational way has fallen over the last several years. You can see it on Mumsnet as well as in the world at large.
Of course in the old days too, MN was full of people charging in with half-thought opinions and a scant grasp of the facts but at least it used to be their own half-thought opinions and scant grasp of the facts.
Now, participants in online discussions are responding to deliberately seeded lies and distortions (and stupid gimmicks like this misuse of the petition tool), and the ignorance of individual contributors just adds layers of additional unrealism onto online narratives that are spun by agitators.
And the more people are immersed in this impoverished level of debate the poorer and poorer their critical thinking skills become.
Soon we will be in a position where there are fewer and fewer people around who can remember what it was even like before our former mediocre level of public discussion descended into this curated mass stupidity.

Agreed. The paucity of online discussion that isn't heavily seeded with inane viral phrases is saddening.

Nina9870 · 24/11/2024 10:01

I’d never ever vote Tory, but I couldn’t vote Labour in the last GE. That’s basically coz I’m not thick and could see Starmer et al for the crooks they are.
But come on, all the Tories throwing their toys out of the pram and demanding another GE is laughable- and they call US snowflakes?!

Aduvetday · 24/11/2024 10:01

Meadowfinch · 24/11/2024 09:55

This is the issue. People are so obsessed with sucking it to the ‘rich’ and taking off everyone. No-one is paying attention.

Pensioners, workers, business, private sector, farmers…next its welfare.

The private sector has officially shrunk, there is no money. The budget has shrunk the cash cow. People are now under threat of losing their job and people are oblivious to the release of the paper called “Get Britain Working” paper next week. The so called saviour of the ill and disabled wants to and needs to radically reform and reduce the welfare state as it has ballooned out of all proportion in comparison to similar economies.

It is like people think the endless money tree keeps growing. My real concern is the hugely vulnerable which will be pulled into this mess. Like the vulnerable pensioners, farming families and those reliant on their job in the private sector,

EasternStandard · 24/11/2024 10:02

Alltheprettyseahorses · 24/11/2024 08:46

If anti-Labour threads are by Tory HQ, were all the anti-Tory ones by Labour HQ? Labour aren't above criticism and they're certainly not the 'grown-ups'. The claim upthread that they're looking after the most vulnerable is laughable - in reality we're being punished and the people I care for are terrified of Reeves and Kendall and their crackdown on disability benefits.

I think the petition is silly. But I also think there's a massive strain of hypocrisy. After the Brexit vote there was a widespread campaign to overturn the result and there are even comments on here condemning the petition but saying the referendum should be overturned (I voted Remain but it was 8 1/2 years ago and the truth is it made no difference). I can also remember the protests after the Tories won in 2019 which included one particularly charming posh trainee doctor screeching that Johnson should die in agony. Then there are all the riots against Trump which may stop short of storming the Capitol but they are violent and dangerous, plus a lot of people are actively hoping he gets assassinated. The petition is extremely civilised in comparison (and not misuse of the system either).

I think some want mn to be pro Labour posts only. Which is unlikely given how badly they are polling. Public sentiment isn't with mn posters who claim all should be pro Starmer and Labour.

They have been woeful but we'll see how the calls increase as they make more 'difficult decisions'. They're shrinking public funding and can't borrow at the rate they are.

Beekeepingmum · 24/11/2024 10:02

Hilarious the Tories demanding a general election now after not giving us one when Truss destroyed the economy.

Heylittlesongbird · 24/11/2024 10:03

I didn’t vote labour, I don’t agree with what labour have done so far in office, but they have been democratically elected. So 400,000 people signing a petition is neither here nor there.
Labour got about 9.7m votes in the election and about 29m voted. So the petition would surely need to get beyond 20m to even start to look like the will of the people had shifted?

If people are oblivious they don't read the news. It is being widely reported.

Writing to your local MP to express specific concerns about a specific policy is a better idea than signing a general petition demanding a general election.

That’s an apolitical point - it’s true whoever is in power.

I am really worried about food security. I don't think anyone in this government has a clue about farming and food production or where our food will come from if uk farming goes under.

food security is definitely under threat, but more so due to climate change. Record numbers of crop failures this year alone. If food security is your concern, you need to look at candidates/ parties with a robust climate change policy. None of the main parties have these

You can see by many posters on here…they are. Shrink the private sector then the welfare and public sector will follow. As night follows day.

Over 9M voted for Labour in July.

Millions voted in petitions to try to overturn Brexit.

200k (likely from a significant number of RW bots - big in Nigeria at the moment) is a drop in the ocean.

This is hysterical.

I voted for Labour and am delighted so far.

That's interesting. Which of the changes do you support?
