A stagnating economy and high tax and spend plus huge borrowing isn't really that

To be fair @EasternStandard The Conservatives saw the biggest tax burden under their tenure and government borrowing was also record breaking.

Also people talking about high earners paying more tax , well surely the solution would be to increase everyone's wages, that way the Government would get more tax to pay for public services ?

How do you increase everyone’s wages then, without putting the price of everything up. Where does the money come from to pay for the increased wages?

Oh yes. Like the FT

'They don't understand business' : corporate Britain cools on Labour

From the FT. Sounds correct

I signed as worried about food costs with the changes to farming land.

Me too.

Labour have admitted they have signed up to lucrative deals with the corrupt corporation Blackrock which is the company that bought up all the small farms in America and turned them into factory farms 😱

This is why they are trying to put the small British farmers out of business.

Labour is the party of corrupt big business.

What, like you over Bwexit

I accepted the Brexit vote though voting for it is nothing to be proud of.

If you get your wish and a GE is called, which party will you vote for?

Over 100k signatures and a parliamentary debate is considered. Even if this led to a vote (unlikely), the size of the Labour majority means it’s a waste of time as it’ll be rejected. Even the other parties won’t want an election - they’re broke from the last one.

So you can say that online petitions work but I doubt this will make any difference.

I think you're right about nothing much being achieved.by this petition, at least on the surface. But it is sure to give the Labour Party chills about their future prospects when many of them are already uneasy about Starmer.

Have you noticed tax and borrowing has gone up since the budget?

Losingthetimber · 24/11/2024 18:02

I can only imagine how the new changes they are proposing to benefits, inc creating roles that people need to take, inc disabled, both physically and mentally, or face sanctions is going to go down.

my worry is most Labour mps will see it falling apart so hard and will vote starmer out based on it, and someone even more incompetent will take over.

as this petition won’t drive a new election. It will potentially drive a change in leadership, as starmer keeps coming after all pockets of the British population and coming after them hard.

Look around at the world - war and hatred

See the sorry state of everything in the uk from education, NHS,climate
Look at the horrible selfish mess the tories left behind
Look at how they continue to sabotage any efforts to make things better

And tell me with truth that you think we have any possible government in the uk today who could do better than the one we have now?

Btw I can define truth if you are struggling with the concept

Yes, genuinely I think it’s went down hill since Labour took over, with inflation, interest rates, unemployment , cost of living. all set to rise. I also see it was recovering under th4 tories. Now I’m no Tory supporter but I genuinely think what we had was better, as this is bad, so so bad.

PandoraSox · 24/11/2024 18:07

This petition calling for a GE had 906,624* *signatures . Funny how it wasn't plastered all over the right wing press...

Growth was better in the first half of this year. Yes I think if policies hadn't reversed that it'd be better

Plus £70bn tax and borrowing to de escalate growth? It'll be interesting to see how that pans out next year

Inflation hasn't gone up as much under Labour government, interest rates have also come down - whilst interest rates and inflation rocketed under tory government. Inflation is predicted to be 1.8%

where are you getting information from that inflation and interest rates have gone up since July? Torys had inflation at 10%

Yes, it’s also funny how the far-left are denying the current petition - despite being even more popular

Yep. Like every other change of government leader before him. And some new leaders who weren’t part of the new government but decided to pretend they were eg Johnson on May.

The Tories were banging on about sorting out the Blair/Labour legacy for years, not just months.

Inflation and interest rates would have come down if the Tories were still in power. Inflation is most likely going up now due to the changes implemented in the budget. It’s such a shame that Sunak called an election when he did. He could still be in power now and we would be in a stronger position as a country. The company that I work for was seeing green shoots of recovery in May (after a dismal 18 months). That all changed after the election was called and has got worse since. 2025 is going to be a tough year for a lot of businesses.

What do you mean "denying the petition"? It is just a petition, it has no actual power to make a GE happen.

Caselgarcia · 24/11/2024 18:16

@midgetastic I can't see any visionary/statesmen/talented/charismatic MPs in the the Labour Cabinet - but then I can't see any in the Tories Shadow Cabinet either. I don't think we've ever had such a poor group of elected representatives in the Commons ever. Saying that - who would want to stand for parliament? I certainly wouldnt with the intrusion into your private life. I thought the Greenpeace stunt on Rishi's private residence was unacceptable. If we are to get good candidates standing for election we need to protect them, otherwise there will be no improvement in the quality.

Oh if only it was as simple as that when vast vast numbers of us wanted a second referendum post Brexit - it's strange plenty were very pro democracy then!! They are in power so tough shit.- just as those opposing Brexit were told. As it happens I agree with virtually everything that's proposed/happening under new gvt-

Problem is the well off don't like the fact they are getting rid of non Dom, changing IHT , vat on school fees, not focussing purely on old people for votes etc. and those more to the left don't like the fact they aren't bunging money left right and centre at all their pet causes etc and actually daring to question benefits as if there are no piss takers- meanwhile plenty of people like me are perfectly happy to let them get on with it . My only issue is I would rather they joined single market/customs union .
