Courtney Ellis, 14, was run over by Brandon Turton, who was driving at 93mph in a 30mph zone, in September 2020. Her older sister who watched she was hit and killed by a speeding driver now "suffers daily" with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Their mother, Angela Burke feels the seven-year driving ban is not enough and is campaigning for anyone who causes death by dangerous driving to receive a lifetime ban.

She said: "I don't want her death to have been for nothing. Imagine seeing the killer who is responsible for taking your child away from you in a horrific way driving around like nothing had happened, it's like rubbing it into my face. Driving is one of life's luxuries and it comes with rules and regulations so if this is abused in this way then this luxury should be taken away from them for life.
All I have left of my Courtney is a box of ashes, photos, her clothes, some of her hair, her handprint from the night she passed.

Courtney is pictured with her older sister and mother below. She is on the right. Please take a moment to sign this petition.

93 fucking mph in a 30! I am stunned at that sentence. That is a barbaric way to kill someone and could not be classed as bad judgment at all. It's playing fast and loose with people's lives with no thought for the consequences, what a dangerous person. I'm appalled at that sentence.

Snowdropsarelovely · 03/12/2022 18:21

I've signed, that's just so unbelievably sad. And I cannot believe how lenient that sentence was...

I have signed. This family live very locally to me. I'm so sorry about what happened to Courtney.

Is this Swindon?

LexMitior · 03/12/2022 18:27

Signed.

Drivers would be much more careful if they lost their license as a matter of routine for driving offences, never mind killing someone.

msssm · 03/12/2022 18:28

Signed. Rip Courtney 💐

REP22 · 03/12/2022 18:31

Signed. That poor, poor family. No excuse could ever be good enough. He should have been banned - and jailed - for life.

No, St Helens Merseyside.

Signed. Rip Courtney 💐

Thanks. Something similar happened in Swindon in the last few weeks.

Onnabugeisha · 03/12/2022 22:07

Thank you everyone and yes this happens a lot and many innocent lives are lost to drivers such as this. It is long past time that the government took dangerous driving more seriously.

Signed. It's horrific and I hope more see the thread in Active and sign it too.

NoWordForFluffy · 03/12/2022 22:51

I've signed too. 93mph is just reprehensible and the sentencing is woefully inadequate.

93 mph on a 30mph zone is not an accident. I've signed.

93 mph on a 30mph zone is not an accident.

It's Russian roulette with a machine gun but shooting at strangers as well as yourself.
I can't imagine anyone who'd played a recklessly dangerous game with a gun ever getting a firearms license again.

Especially when zooming past a park where children are playing. That’s where Courtney was…she was crossing the road after playing in the park with her elder sister. This was in broad daylight too.

I never understand why the courts impose driving bans to run concurrently with custodial sentences.

Eg 5 year driving ban, 5 year prison sentence. When the offender is out, he can just start driving again.

It should be that the driving ban starts as soon as they are released. Because they can’t drive whilst in prison regardless, so a driving ban on someone in jail is just pointless - there’s no substance.
