Justice for Courtney Ellis aged 14 killed by a driver going 93mph in a 30mph zone

Courtney Ellis, 14, was run over by Brandon Turton, who was driving at 93mph in a 30mph zone, in September 2020. Her older sister who watched she was hit and killed by a speeding driver now "suffers daily" with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Their mother, Angela Burke feels the seven-year driving ban is not enough and is campaigning for anyone who causes death by dangerous driving to receive a lifetime ban.

She said: "I don't want her death to have been for nothing. Imagine seeing the killer who is responsible for taking your child away from you in a horrific way driving around like nothing had happened, it's like rubbing it into my face. Driving is one of life's luxuries and it comes with rules and regulations so if this is abused in this way then this luxury should be taken away from them for life.
All I have left of my Courtney is a box of ashes, photos, her clothes, some of her hair, her handprint from the night she passed.

Courtney is pictured with her older sister and mother below. She is on the right. Please take a moment to sign this petition.

Sentences in this country are an absolute joke.

No different to delibarate, straight up murder when you actively decide to do something this dangerous. Shocking.

We are all careful to make sure we have insurance, yet, IME, when someone is seriously injured (or killed) by an uninsured driver, the outcome is that there is no compensation for the seriously injured victim and the perpetrator gets off very lightly.

Ididanamechange · 26/11/2022 16:38

I've signed it OP. No one accidently drives as 93mph even on a motorway, it's always a choice and when that choice ends someone life there needs to be harsh consequences.

Thank you everyone. 🙏

The system isn't even joined up. You need insurance, an MOT and tax but you can tax your car without having any insurance.

Quick Sunday bump. The petition has gone from 2,530 to 2,702. Anything you can do dear MNers to help push it to the 10,000 for the government to take notice would be absolutely stellar. This is a grieving mum and elder sister who only want dangerous drivers kept off the road. They’re not asking for much. Please support their petition.

Sunday afternoon is a good time for a Brew and a check of the petitions board.

This is the first I’ve seen of this, it’s absolutely horrifying. That poor child’s sister, having to witness it, I can’t imagine how you cope with that. The sentencing is disgusting. I’ve signed.

This thread could do with being bumped regularly so more people see it.

Is that allowed? I’m happy to do so

Yes, bumping petitions threads is pretty standard practice else they languish on this board unseen. It's not meant to be a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard’ but that's the effect unless you can get it into active convos once in a while.

Morph22010 · 03/12/2022 09:49

Don’t disagree wirbt the Petition but for the type of people we are looking at a driving ban isn’t likely to stop them driving anyway. Needs to be harsher sentences for anyone found driving whilst disqualified whether they’ve caused an incident or not

caroleanboneparte · 03/12/2022 09:50

Signed.

Unescorted · 03/12/2022 09:52

I have signed it.

If you "accidentally" speed you should not have a driving licence.

If you "accidentally" didn't realise you had been drinking you should not have a driving licence.

If you "accidentally" don't see another road user you should not have a driving licence.

I wish her the best of luck with the petition.

Hidingawaytoday · 03/12/2022 10:04

Signed, how sad

Yes I agree, the petition isn’t asking for much and I’d have signed one asking for a much harsher penalty and also one that bans dangerous drivers before they kill someone.

Hmm…ok then i will shamelessly bump this petition now and then to catch those who have missed seeing it. 😁

And a bump before I run errands. Petition is now at 2,779 signatures….can we break 3,000 this weekend? 10,000 is the ultimate goal.
