Justice for Courtney Ellis aged 14 killed by a driver going 93mph in a 30mph zone

Courtney Ellis, 14, was run over by Brandon Turton, who was driving at 93mph in a 30mph zone, in September 2020. Her older sister who watched she was hit and killed by a speeding driver now "suffers daily" with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Their mother, Angela Burke feels the seven-year driving ban is not enough and is campaigning for anyone who causes death by dangerous driving to receive a lifetime ban.

She said: "I don't want her death to have been for nothing. Imagine seeing the killer who is responsible for taking your child away from you in a horrific way driving around like nothing had happened, it's like rubbing it into my face. Driving is one of life's luxuries and it comes with rules and regulations so if this is abused in this way then this luxury should be taken away from them for life.
All I have left of my Courtney is a box of ashes, photos, her clothes, some of her hair, her handprint from the night she passed.

Courtney is pictured with her older sister and mother below. She is on the right. Please take a moment to sign this petition.

Morning bump. Hopeful for more signatures :)

Yes - it's unfortunately quite hard to get petitions noticed, I'm sure a lot of people don't know this board exists or even if they do it's easy to forget to check it for new petitions worthy of support.

Maverickess · 26/11/2022 11:14

I've signed too, doing 93mph anywhere isn't an accident or a momentary lapse of concentration, he should never be allowed to drive again.

NiceTwin · 26/11/2022 11:28

@Onnabugeisha saying the driving ban runs concurrently is simplistic, you should look up the legislation. Half of the ban period is added on to the total ban, making the assumption he will serve half his sentence, so the ban period is still the full total given. I haven't explained that very well 🤦🏻
He will not be driving months after his release and will very likely have to sit an extended test before he can get behind the wheel again.

That said, his actions were abhorrent and I have signed the petition.

Thank you for clarifying, I was just going by a sentence or two in a news report. I’m sorry it was not accurate.

I’m guilty of forgetting and not checking it as often as I should.

@Onnabugeisha don't apologise.
I only know because I was outraged myself at bans being similar to sentences.
I looked it up and was somewhat cheered to know the bans do actually impact those that receive them.

TwigTheWonderKid · 26/11/2022 13:26

I've signed. People who act in this way have no right to ever be behind the wheel of car again. I also find the brevity of prison sentences for people who kill with their cars utterly shocking.

What a devastating and totally avoidable loss.

Signed. If you've killed someone because of such obvious dangerous driving you should never be allowed to drive again.

How awful. I'm not sure I've even driven 93 in a 70.

There are parents in my bereavement group who have lost their children in shocking circumstances, killed by drivers with no licence, no insurance, not even legally in the country, never mind driving a vehicle. Nothing is done about these people. They seem to be untouchable. Even the ones who are drunk or under the influence of drugs just get a temporary ban. They should be permanently disqualified and go to prison.

It happens far too often. There was recently Fanella Hawes, aged 20. Walking along the pavement and a drunk driver drove off the road, onto the pavement and killed her, injuring another teen girl.

I think none of these drivers should ever drive again. They’ve proven to be a menace. And to be clear, not talking about drivers that have a seizure or a spider jump on their face and then cause and accident. Talking about drivers that knowingly drive dangerously and kill anyone.

Its not much to ask. One day I’d like to see a lifetime driving ban even no one has died (yet). After a life is taken, it should be automatic and the least thing we can do to keep everyone else safe.

Driving at 93 (or even the 73 which was the lower end of the range mentioned in the petition) in a 30 limit is so wilfully reckless that a lifetime ban might be a reasonable precautionary measure.
