Justice for Courtney Ellis aged 14 killed by a driver going 93mph in a 30mph zone

Courtney Ellis, 14, was run over by Brandon Turton, who was driving at 93mph in a 30mph zone, in September 2020. Her older sister who watched she was hit and killed by a speeding driver now "suffers daily" with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Their mother, Angela Burke feels the seven-year driving ban is not enough and is campaigning for anyone who causes death by dangerous driving to receive a lifetime ban.

She said: "I don't want her death to have been for nothing. Imagine seeing the killer who is responsible for taking your child away from you in a horrific way driving around like nothing had happened, it's like rubbing it into my face. Driving is one of life's luxuries and it comes with rules and regulations so if this is abused in this way then this luxury should be taken away from them for life.
All I have left of my Courtney is a box of ashes, photos, her clothes, some of her hair, her handprint from the night she passed.

Courtney is pictured with her older sister and mother below. She is on the right. Please take a moment to sign this petition.

Bumping again after seeing the Harry Dunn verdict.
12 month ban and 8 month suspended sentence. Absolutely appalling.

Does that ban just apply in the U.K. where that woman is unlikely to set foot again?Hmm still, getting her tried and found guilty was a victory of sorts for Harry Dunn's family, against such odds, so I hope it brings them some peace now.

Yes, ban only in the UK. There was a good discussion on R4 this evening. Evidently the judge sounded v. pissed off. But, the penalties were similar to those if defendant had been in the UK. Only issue of course, is that defendant actually doesn't have to face any real consequences.

Sorry, didn't reply to your question upthread OP. I'm not sure - I just don't understand why this thread/the petition isn't getting more interest. Perhaps an AIBU discussing the broader issues of whether driving is a right or a privilege, and the level of sentencing for various types of killing by car might?

Thinking of other mothers tonight who have lost their child(ren).

Onnabugeisha · 12/12/2022 19:42

Yes, it’s my greatest fear really, just thinking of parents who have lost child(ren) makes me want to hug mine close.

I've forwarded the petition to a couple people who I hope will sign. Sad to see the petition not getting the support that it deserves.

Thank you. I am sad about that too tbh. I’m wishing I were a huge influencer of some sort or a celebrity with millions of followers.
