Petition to implement a 2 week school closure before Christmas

Please sign this petition if you would like schools to move to online learning from 9 December so we can all self isolate before meeting elderly relatives for Christmas

Don't be so ridiculous. Education is more important than your jolly at Christmas, and there is nowhere near enough time to ensure families can facilitate home learning. What do you suggest working parents do, what about children without access to a computer?

Not everyone has elderly relatives who want to be treated like idiots.

Most of us have to work. Are we to leave the children home alone all day?

Maybe just spend Christmas at home, instead of trying to fuck things up for others?

Well my DS has GCSE mocks from tomorrow until 18th so no, I won’t be signing. His final grades may yet be based on mock grades so he needs to take them as planned.

Besides which the wording is crap. “So they can see older relatives”? Seriously, Christmas is a day. Wait a few months and they can see their older relatives then. Or do you think that kids who have broken up from school too weeks early and are bored are going to obediently stay home while their parents have to go out to work....?

The "online learning" provided during bubble closures this term has been utterly shit. No live teaching. Just worksheets uploaded that take the children 20 mins a day to do. So no I absolutely would not support this.

No thank you. It's difficult enough to juggle work with the threat of self isolations etc. An extra 2 weeks is too much. Many of us work out of the home and can't justify another 2 weeks off.

I note that it hasn’t actually been suggested in any official circles that the schools be closed, so I think it’s safe to say it won’t be happening. Especially not with this little notice.

Bear in mind that this would need to be voted in, and I think there’s 0 chance that it will be.

My youngest child is currently off isolating yet again. She has had a previous period isolating with symptoms (negative test) and the class bubble burst. She has spent more time off than in since schools went back in September.

I will not support an early school closure so people can fuck about over Christmas mixing households (And before anyone gets on their high horses I am CV and my autistic kids mental health suffered massively during lockdown one so DO NOT throw at me that I don't care about vulnerable people or those with mental health problems).

The elderly and vulnerable in my family don't want this.

They know that the children have had a tough enough year already.

They don't want any more stress on working parents (their children).

They are happy to make their own decisions re: Christmas. Accept the risk of infection for a day or two of normality or wait a few months for a vaccine.

Of all the things to campaign about?!

I work in a school with very underprivileged kids and don’t agree with this, and I have a Y11 child who needs to be in school.

The children in my school, whilst given every opportunity to learn during the lockdown, are so behind in their leaning it’s scary. We have children who have pretty much forgotten how to read and write. The children need to be in school more than they need to see their relatives.

The local MAT put this out to parents as an option before it came to light that the DFE had already rejected one Trust’s request to do so. I was against it.

No! I know I'm being selfish when I say this but I'm a supply teacher and I don't get paid if I don't work. I was furloughed over the long lockdown but I wouldn't be furloughed again. Dh lost his job due to covid and we're on the breadline. If I don't work we can't pay rent.

Whilst we are it, let’s shut the emergency services down, all front line staff, shops, and everything else. Just so we can see elderly relatives 🙈

I’d happily sign a petition to stop this stupid idea of relaxing restrictions over Christmas. I think that’s utter madness!!

If there was going to be an extra lockdown/schools off for longer, it should be after Christmas when people have mixing with all and sundry and then going back to school/work and passing it in, as that would counteract the stupid idea of relaxing all the restrictions.
