Please sign this petition if you would like schools to move to online learning from 9 December so we can all self isolate before meeting elderly relatives for Christmas

I work in a school and it's a firm NO

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 29/11/2020 16:56

You're petitioning for the wrong thing

Petition for safer schools and mitigating actions (with budget to allow to them to be implemented), proper IT and wifi access for all children when they do have to learn at home, some kind of decent strategy for GCSE and A level, and no fines for vulnerable children missing school or children with vulnerable people in their households, and I might sign it.

Growapair · 29/11/2020 16:56

Oh don’t be so ridiculous. If you want to keep your kids off, then keep them off. Don’t try to disrupt the education of the rest of the countries children though! 😡

AlternativePerspective · 29/11/2020 16:56

I’d happily sign a petition to stop this stupid idea of relaxing restrictions over Christmas. I think that’s utter madness!! I started a thread suggesting Christmas just be cancelled i.e. there be no mixing, and was royally told to fuck off among other things. How people would be doing as they wanted and how we can’t tell people they shouldn’t be mixing.

And yet now there are allowances people are complaining about those.

My personal view is that it’s Christmas, so what? Given that most people only celebrate Christmas for the food, the drink and the presence rather than the religious element I think it’s fair to suggest that they could have such a party any other day of the year.

Interestingly I suggested fairly early on that they leave restrictions in place and have an extra bank holiday next year, and I read earlier this week that the extra bank holiday is being considered.

Artus · 29/11/2020 16:56

Absolutely not.

And older members of the family dont want this either.

pastandpresent · 29/11/2020 16:57

No. Sorry. I don't want school to close.

OverTheRainbow88 · 29/11/2020 16:59

I would prefer to sign a petition to stop Christmas mixing

MiddleClassMother · 29/11/2020 16:59

How ridiculous, what about those of us that have jobs to do? Just because you can have a jolly at Christmas and go see everyone doesn't me we can.

TheFairyCaravan · 29/11/2020 17:00

Nope.

Children need to be at school.

Cecilia2016 · 29/11/2020 17:01

A big NO! My children has just finished 2 weeks of isolation and tomorrow will be the first day back to school.

EnglishRose1320 · 29/11/2020 17:02

I would be all for a relaxation of the fines for individuals based on situations, giving a head teacher the right to decide but even then only in extreme situations. If the relative they want to see has a terminal illness and it's very likely their last Christmas, then yes I think it would be okay for the child to be off long enough to isolate, but only if they aren't in exam years. I don't think closing schools for two weeks will help anything though, most people would just start socialising early.

whiskybysidedoor · 29/11/2020 17:03

I would also sign a petition to stop the Xmas mixing thing. Problem is the economy needs the Xmas spending in the run up. I wouldn’t be surprised if they back track at the last minute to be honest.

OudRose · 29/11/2020 17:03

Why the need for the petition? Just take your children out if you want to surely?

School isn't prison, if you're happy for your DC to miss another two weeks of learning then crack on.

movingonup20 · 29/11/2020 17:10

Education is more important. Do what we are doing and spend Christmas at home, won't be seeing my kids or parents which is upsetting but necessary.

TheHobbitMum · 29/11/2020 17:13

As someone who is CEV and visiting Inlaws for Christmas, I won't be signing either. Kids need to be in school and what are working parents supposed to do? Will never happen

FrippEnos · 29/11/2020 17:13

I would prefer a petition that asks for more funding for schools so that they can remain open safely.

LilyMumsnet · 29/11/2020 17:14

Hi OP

We're just moving this over to our petitions topic.

BackforGood · 29/11/2020 17:21

Another big 'no' here.
I'd be FAR more interested in some sensible conversations to explain to the cerebrally challenged that the virus is NOT going to go on holiday for 5 days over Christmas, and that, if we want to celebrate future Christmases with our loved ones, people need to think very carefully about what they are planning to do this year.

Biglumpycustard · 29/11/2020 17:30

Nope, I have to go to work.

Susanwouldntlikeit · 29/11/2020 17:31

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.... No.
This.
I am a teacher and I value education, so no.

Ylvamoon · 29/11/2020 17:33

No, No and No!!

My DC understand the importance of school and my elderly relatives understand why christmas will be on a tiny scale this year. (= as in just the people in my household)

CiggyStardust · 29/11/2020 17:36

Sure, I'll sign it.

Are you going to pay two weeks wages for me, or come and look after my kid so I can keep working?

Assuming the latter would scupper your isolation plans so I'll PM you my account details 🙄

Cheesecake53 · 29/11/2020 17:40

signed, thanks for making aware of that.

Throwntothewolves · 29/11/2020 17:46

No. I won't be doing that because the children have already missed too much school this year, we won't be able to home educate as we're both working outside of the home ('key workers' if that is of any relevance now), and we aren't seeing family at Christmas anyway as I'm working right through, including Christmas day.

But feel free to keep your kids home (say they're 'self isolating' if you need an excuse) so you can meet your extended family safely. No one is stopping you doing that, so please don't try to stop the rest of us living our lives as normally as we can

Ralphschocolate · 29/11/2020 18:01

I work in a secondary school and that'll be a 'no chance' from me.
