Can you help my DDs?

Kind fellow Mumsnetters. We live in London and Hammersmith Bridge has now completely closed. My DDs (15 and 12) are back to school this week and what was a 20 minute walk to school is now iimpossible. Thousands of people but only 3 buses per hour (max 14 pax) and even if they do get on its now a detour of up to 1hr40 mins each way.

Staggered starts and not allowed in school before then so really tough to drive them both (plus up to 4hrs in car each day for me and would have to give up my job)

Walk would take 1hr 20 mins each way, some through an unlit park that is a hot spot for muggings.

And it's not just kids, pensioners are really trapped 1.5 hour journey to get to the Dr or the shops when it was a 20 minute walk.

We are running out of options and despite us pleading for discussion the government is playing politics and utterly stonewalling.

We would be so grateful for your support

Hello neighbor :) at least I think you are. I got your a very similar request through the estate management company. Obviously signed.

For school kids (both ways) I'd love to see a ferry service :) Boats aren't allowed to pass under the bridge anyway so crossing wouldn't interfere with "normal" river traffic.

There are about 600 kids at St. Paul's senior school who are affected as well. I'll circulate with them to sign.

Also signed. It’s a disgrace. They’ve known for years (decades?) that this would happen and there’s no contingency plan yet, in the meantime, lots of money has been wasted on plans for fancy garden bridges that never actually happened. Makes you wonder what we pay taxes for if not for basic infrastructure 😡

Summertime2 · 03/09/2020 12:44

You are all amazing! Thank you mumsnet

Just googled it - there won't be another Oxford Cambridge Boat Race.
Maybe encourage the rowing clubs & Oxford and Cambridge Uni students to sign?

itbemay1 · 03/09/2020 13:14

Signed. Ridiculous!!

Summertime2 · 03/09/2020 13:17

I cant tell you much it means that you all are signing! This back to school is pretty stressful for everyone but not being able to get them there safely is making me feel desperate.
