Can you help my DDs?

Kind fellow Mumsnetters. We live in London and Hammersmith Bridge has now completely closed. My DDs (15 and 12) are back to school this week and what was a 20 minute walk to school is now iimpossible. Thousands of people but only 3 buses per hour (max 14 pax) and even if they do get on its now a detour of up to 1hr40 mins each way.

Staggered starts and not allowed in school before then so really tough to drive them both (plus up to 4hrs in car each day for me and would have to give up my job)

Walk would take 1hr 20 mins each way, some through an unlit park that is a hot spot for muggings.

And it's not just kids, pensioners are really trapped 1.5 hour journey to get to the Dr or the shops when it was a 20 minute walk.

We are running out of options and despite us pleading for discussion the government is playing politics and utterly stonewalling.

We would be so grateful for your support

Just giving this a bump, as it’s in a bit of a backwater.

You are all amazing! My 12 yr old DD spoke at the protest at Hammersmith Bridge this afternoon about how scared she is about trying to get to school. You are helping her x
@LilyMumsnet Why are you doing that? No one will see it there.
It is the rule on MN. It's still getting hits though Smile

Why can't they keep it open for pedestrians and cyclists?

They did, for months (it's been closed to vehicles for yonks)

It's in a parlous enough state now to ban all use and (if still in force) river traffic below. Because it could come down at any time.

So yes, a pedestrian bridge - probably a little distance away so it wouldn't be damaged if there was a collapse - is really needed. The Army can build this sort of thing pretty quickly, and it shouldn't be that expensive.

I think it's a disgrace that they're not already on to it.

Clymene · 04/09/2020 09:57

It's been in a parkour state for years. They should have planned for this some time ago

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 04/09/2020 10:19

Good luck.
