Can you help my DDs?

Kind fellow Mumsnetters. We live in London and Hammersmith Bridge has now completely closed. My DDs (15 and 12) are back to school this week and what was a 20 minute walk to school is now iimpossible. Thousands of people but only 3 buses per hour (max 14 pax) and even if they do get on its now a detour of up to 1hr40 mins each way.

Staggered starts and not allowed in school before then so really tough to drive them both (plus up to 4hrs in car each day for me and would have to give up my job)

Walk would take 1hr 20 mins each way, some through an unlit park that is a hot spot for muggings.

And it's not just kids, pensioners are really trapped 1.5 hour journey to get to the Dr or the shops when it was a 20 minute walk.

We are running out of options and despite us pleading for discussion the government is playing politics and utterly stonewalling.

We would be so grateful for your support
petition.parliament.uk/petitions/549607 Thanks

Csn you ask uber boats to run a ferry service?
Apart from temporary bridge option everything else will take months
How feasible is temp bridge built by army? Woukx it prevent boat traffic?
Coukd they patrol and light the unsafe muggers alley ? Can the kids cycld if safe cycle way put in using temp bollards ?

Also, if there's anyone one MN who knows Sir Steve Redgrave, Sir Matthew Pinsent or any of their families or anyone involved with British Rowing (there's Olympic Gold up for grabs next year!) please give them a gentle shove...

Lysianthus · 03/09/2020 13:27

Signed. Good luck, op.

BlackKittyKat · 03/09/2020 13:27

Signed. Good luck OP

@Summertime2
Your DDs may want to contact all of these people for their support:
www.britishrowing.org/gb-rowing-team/meet-the-team/

from TFL website "The bridge is closed to river traffic, and the Thames Path is closed below the bridge on both sides of the river." so no rowing under it until it's fixed.

Gunpowder · 03/09/2020 13:29

Another sign and bump.

greengreengrass14 · 03/09/2020 13:31

Signed. Email link to confirm.
OMG in solidarity with you and your DD's.

There I was having a moan about complications for the start of school here, but at least we don't have that to contend with .

This situation sounds like the school commute from hell.

Hope people power changes things. It must be such a worry but well done being brave enough to take action. I don't know London but hope something changes soon. How about approaching Woman's Hour, possibly to do a radio piece (or your DDs might be able to record it with a device and that would make the difficulties even more clear to liisteners.

Woman's Hour is fab.

Hi OP

We're just moving this thread over to our petitions topic. Flowers

pussycatinboots · 03/09/2020 13:32

@LilyMumsnet Why are you doing that? No one will see it there.

greengreengrass14 · 03/09/2020 13:33

wonder if it would also go on gransnet? as up say seniors are affected too and many grandparents help out with child care

greengreengrass14 · 03/09/2020 13:35

I agree, surely it should go under current affairs and stay where it is

NoImNotPregnant · 03/09/2020 13:38

Signed!

pussycatinboots · 03/09/2020 13:38

@greengreengrass14 I didn't know there was a "petitions" topic. Stupid idea to move something that is generating so much traffic.

ohtheholidays · 03/09/2020 13:39

Signed, hope it helps and it all gets sorted quickly.

Most probably something you've already done but just incase you haven't I'd share it on FB and Twitter.

Magissa · 03/09/2020 13:45

Signed. I need that bridge daily. Such a nuisance. Nothing has moved forward since it closed to traffic. How H+F and Tfl can't come up with a solution in this day and age is appalling. Maybe they should do a gofundme.

ChaChaCha2012 · 03/09/2020 13:46

I wasn't aware of this, so thought I'd post a link for others that might not be as well.

www.richmond.gov.uk/hammersmith_bridge_to_be_fully_closed_from_today

To give it some context, £140m of funding is needed. The government gave out £500m for the eating out scheme. Our priorities are totally screwed.

TheQueensCousin · 03/09/2020 13:47

Signed and letting you know for a bump. Good luck OP. Sounds like a nightmare :((

Magissa · 03/09/2020 13:54

Think it may be on TV later. I heard there is a demo at 5pm.

Magissa · 03/09/2020 13:57

Hope that works

Summertime2 · 03/09/2020 14:00

Thank you everyone! If people still see this in petitions I'll be so happy but if not, thanks all of you who have helped so far.

xx
