Would you vote to end the monarchy?

At the end of this month Republic is heading to Plymouth and Truro to host screenings of the documentary The Man Who Shouldn't Be King.

The film highlights the real problems Duchy of Cornwall tenants face becaues of the feudal way Prince Charles runs the estate. Making the film has spurred us on to get the Duchy taken off Charles's hands (it's not his private property) and to ensure all Duchy tenants enjoy the same rights as the rest of us.

All our events around the country are part of Republic's Where You Live programme. You can find out more and help us organise more events by donating at www.republic.org.uk/whereyoulive

No

Mner2000 · 21/03/2020 06:40

Yes

Republic

The film shows how Prince Charles is unfit to be king and how his failures are the failures of the monarchy he inhabits.

Experts and commentators question Charles's conduct as Duke of Cornwall, his interference in politics and public debate and whether his character is suited to high office.

The answer? We need to choose our next head of state.

A huge thank you to everyone who donated to make this film possible.

In June 219 Charles received 21 million from a landed estate called the Duchy of Cornwall.

The Duchy is not a private property, it belongs to the crown, a central part of the British State

The land, the power and the privilege

An awful lot is spent on that one family.

Yes

They cost an awful lot of money

I used to think it was good for tourism. But we have so many tourists now

Yes I would. What value do they add?

LastTrainEast · 01/05/2020 08:52

Yes. For the money yes, but for the principle. Do we want to be a democracy or not.

redcarbluecar · 01/05/2020 08:56

I would certainly vote to scale down the monarchy and reduce their public profile. The level to which we’re invited to have strong feelings about them (from adoration and deference all the way to judgement and loathing) is ridiculous. I do feel some attachment to the history and tradition they represent, but my head says the institution is outdated and unnecessary.

DodgyTrousers · 01/05/2020 08:57

Of course not

3rdNamechange · 01/05/2020 08:59

Yes , the sooner the better

Ajollygoodwrap · 01/05/2020 09:07

Yes - it's ridiculous now but...

No - compared to the alternative. It's between the rock and a hard place really. Either way, money will be spent unnecessarily on fellow human beings while others are treated like they're less than.

I hate celeb culture and that includes the monarchy, government officials, etc. No one is less than another and no one should be worshipped for their position. I vote for equal treatment of all but that's not going to happen, so let them stay. The devil you know....and all that.

Calyx72 · 01/05/2020 21:19

Yes

Trezo · 01/05/2020 21:27

There would be a choice it would be an elected head of state. Chosen by the people who would work in the interests of the people.

Someone like the president of Ireland who is well respected and liked.

Yes, of course. It astonishes me that any non royals would not. I don't know why anyone wants a system where what matters is who gave birth to you, not what you yourself have done.

NoMoreReluctantCustodians · 26/05/2020 23:07

Yes. I would vote to end the monarchy. But not in the Queen's lifetime

NoMoreReluctantCustodians · 26/05/2020 23:11

But I dont see the point of getting rid of the monarchy to elect another head of state. Can that not just be our PM?

Although at the moment maybe that isn't
going so well

Melonportal · 26/05/2020 23:15

Yes

Notmyrealname855 · 26/05/2020 23:22

Yes.

Andrew is an example of lack of accountability (in his “service” and private life affecting his “service”). Even if any of them do good work, what message is it that one family arbitrarily have this role? It’s not entirely clear what money they get and what time they dedicate to their jobs. I doubt it’d affect tourism, in fact we could open up all the palaces for tours/ private event hires.

Notmyrealname855 · 26/05/2020 23:23

Legit would rather have Jenny and Lee from gogglebox as our monarchs... (randomly thinking of role models). maybe we could have different people do it each year or so, like the county sheriffs?

LastTrainEast · 26/05/2020 23:36

Yes.

Many people seem to think if we don't have an elderly woman who makes a speech at christmas then we must elect a president. I don't know where they get that from.

We could have a competition and the winner could read the speech out.

Okay it's not quite all the queen does. She also travels to other countries to eat big meals and get her photo taken. I expect the people there who pay for it would be relieved if it ended. Especially in countries where many are starving.

No. We are heading towards a dictatorship and I want to keep our last protection.

Only 50 MPs to be allowed in the House, no suggestion as to how they vote and you want to help the dictatorship along. www.parliament.uk/business/news/2020/may/speaker-agrees-to-recall-of-parliament/

SuperFurryDoggy · 29/05/2020 08:05

Probably. I would want to have a good look at both sides first and would want a significant nod to tradition kept in whatever institutions and practices replace it.
