Would you vote to end the monarchy?

At the end of this month Republic is heading to Plymouth and Truro to host screenings of the documentary The Man Who Shouldn't Be King.

The film highlights the real problems Duchy of Cornwall tenants face becaues of the feudal way Prince Charles runs the estate. Making the film has spurred us on to get the Duchy taken off Charles's hands (it's not his private property) and to ensure all Duchy tenants enjoy the same rights as the rest of us.

All our events around the country are part of Republic's Where You Live programme. You can find out more and help us organise more events by donating at www.republic.org.uk/whereyoulive

It’s a shame that most people saying no aren’t explaining why.

MauriceandAlec · 10/03/2020 16:08

Yes. And they can fund their own lives with all their money, they have loads.

dudsville · 10/03/2020 16:09

Yes i would. I don't believe they are appointed God here to guide and direct us.

Yes, I think our current monarch should be our last. I used to think it was important to carry on as they were an important aspect of our history, traditions and culture, but I have recently changed my mind. The wealth and privilege - which are not earned - can not be justified in the modern day and appear obscene when compared with the austerity many of our citizens have to try to live with.

Bluebutterfly90 · 10/03/2020 16:32

Yes.

Once the Queen goes, thank you very much but that's your lot.

SirChing · 10/03/2020 16:32

Haven't we learned anything from the Brexit referendum fiasco?

Decide what you want to replace the Monarchy with before you ask people to decide to get rid of them!

GinnyStrupac · 10/03/2020 16:32

And yes, whether you are Christian or not, gone are the days when most people - any people? - believe that HMQ and her heirs are God-given.

Tartyflette · 10/03/2020 16:33

Yep. Too many of them doing fuck all on our (Metaphorical) dollar.
Even his mother thinks Prince Charles lives very extravagantly.
I don't suppose he'd be awful as king but i don't think he'll be terribly impressive either. A bit like Edward VII who ascended to the throne late in life after Queen Victoria died.
The latest rubbish with Megan and Harry has brought it into sharp relief -- the bottom line is that the survival of the monarchy as an institution Is paramount, and the throwing under the bus of the next monarch's second son is a small price to pay.
Would anyone outside the palace really give as fig if the Sussexes kept their HRH titles/used the word 'Royal' or not? It looks unbelievably petty and not a little spiteful but it seems to be something they obsess over.
(CF Edward VIII's wife being denied the HRH title post-abdication and Princess Diana being stripped of it after her divorce from Chas. And let's not forget the treatment of the Russian imperial family who were denied sanctuary here in 1917 because our Royal Family, their cousins, were shit scared that we'd somehow catch revolution and go the same way as the Soviets. It really is just about self preservation and survival )

I've always had a republican streak, but it was repeatedly shut down by people who claimed the Queen had special powers that ensured we could not drift into extremism like the poor republic countries of Europe.

Then last year, it emerged the Queen has no powers whatsoever. Nothing. It's debatable whether she could be allowed to even choose her own outfit, if the government told her to wear something specific.

It was at that point I completely lost interest. If we wanted an expensive family to set an example, we know how to follow the Kardashians on Twitter.

Hinchunup · 10/03/2020 17:06

Why do we have to replace them with anything ? Can’t we just have a prime minister and government? It’s not like the Queen actually lays the law down and vetos anything if she doesn’t agree with what the government is doing/proposing.

Squeakycheese · 10/03/2020 18:37

Yes

A quick.google alone will tell you that actually, the Queen has a raft of legal and political duties. That the public aren't aware of them doesn't negate their existence.

SerendipityJane · 10/03/2020 18:57

We all have duties. As we learned - painfully - she has fuck all power.

Name something that she - and she alone - can do without (or against) government advice. There is nothing.

ShakespearesSisters · 10/03/2020 19:00

No

Cheesecake53 · 10/03/2020 19:09

Yes, absolutely!

Mrskeats · 10/03/2020 20:52

Let's not allow the public another vote after the last fiasco.
And no I wouldn't.

SirChing · 10/03/2020 20:56

The power to prevent the police investigating certain criminal cases. Cases in court are R (the Queen).Vs whomever. The Queen can prevent criminal investigations taking place in the UK. Quite handy for her with Prince Andrew as a son.......

Snog · 10/03/2020 20:57

Absolutely yes
I strongly dislike their hypocrisy and can think of a million and one better ways to spend tax payers money

ChicChicChicChiclana · 10/03/2020 21:01

No. I'm not a fan or sycophant and am quite far left in my in my politics. But I think they give good value for money and I like a bit of tradition

I feel more disgust and offence in the obscene amounts of wealth of many other individuals and families.

The monarchy serves a public purpose.

monkeypigsysandy · 10/03/2020 21:06

Yes, the PA situation is disgraceful, they've had their day
