Controversial topic, I know, but there's a petition here for those who think schools should close.

Duh! kids would be in the house with a parent, that would have the spread

But they wouldn't. The vast majority of parents who are able to be home to look after their kids will not keep them at home the whole time. I can guarantee they'll be taking them to parks and soft play places and shops instead.

If you think closing schools will mean all those children are isolated at home, you're deluded.

AJPTaylor · 07/03/2020 18:37

My understanding is that in Italy
Kids are out and about
Being looked after by grandparents, the group most at risk
Parents are taking them to different regions where the risks to them are lower (but spreading it to new areas)

Devlesko · 07/03/2020 18:39

Not when soft play is closed because everyone's off sick.
Plus, could you imagine the look and scowls of parents taking their kids out to infect others.
A complete shutdown was required, short but nothing coming in or out. No, it wouldn't stop it, but it would allow fewer cases and the peak would be manageable.

Babytigerrr · 07/03/2020 19:00

From you, yes.

From other people? No!

SallyLovesCheese · 07/03/2020 19:20

And all the shops? And play parks? And coffee shops? And restaurants?

Close the schools and you'll have millions of kids out and about in public far more than they would have been otherwise.

bluehighlighter · 07/03/2020 19:41

The virus is spreading worldwide. How would shutting the borders for a short while some time ago have helped?

Devlesko · 07/03/2020 20:01

Babytigerr

Don't tar everyone with the same brush as yourself. I have faith that in a shut down most parents would keep their children at home, and those not adhering to it wouldn't be very popular.
We should have shut down, like all the other countries that have sensible governments.

Thisismytimetoshine · 07/03/2020 20:06

What’s behind that faith, Devlesko?

You’ve only to read the chickenpox threads to realise what selfish arseholes people can be.
“My child is covered with chickenpox, but they’re so bored at home, aibu to take them to the park? Oh, and if I go to the park it makes sense to drop into the supermarket while I’m out, right?”
Go for it, hun. Anyone gives you evils just tell them to fuck off! x 50.
There are far more complete fools about than you like to imagine.

Babytigerrr · 07/03/2020 20:08

have faith that in a shut down most parents would keep their children at home

Then i think youre very naive.

Most people will not be able to afford to stay off work unpaid for long periods of time. Most people have to work to keep their children with a roof over their heads.

nether · 07/03/2020 20:11

There is community transmission in UK (10? cases of unknown source)

So social distancing might be desirable. Closing schools wouid be a bit of a nuclear option (because it wouid take so many important workers out of the workforce, making the community impact much worse). So I'd want to see other, non-essential gatherings and hubs closed first

Devlesko · 07/03/2020 20:16

Right, so when the kids are off ill, or your work is closed, or you or your partner are off, you'll all go out infecting others.
They'll be nowhere to go anywhere in the event of the hypothetical shutdown we should have had.

Babytigerrr · 07/03/2020 20:20

If im off work actually ill, ill be getting paid anyway but i wouldnt go out no. If ds is ill i wont but i wouldnt take him out when ill, no.

People who are not ill are unlikely to keep their children under house arrest.

People who are not ill are unlikely to voluntarily stay off work unpaid.

People will use childcare. Therefore kids will still mix.

You are deluded if you think this wont happen.

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 07/03/2020 21:40

Right, so when the kids are off ill, or your work is closed, or you or your partner are off, you'll all go out infecting others

But the children, nor the parents are ill. Do you seriously think people would shut themselves in the house for weeks on end?

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 07/03/2020 21:43

I work in a school and will have mixed with hundreds of children over the last couple of weeks. If the school closed I would not shut myself away at home.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/03/2020 21:47

I work in housing. I also think the self-isolating stuff is nonsense. Most of my thousands of tenants don't have the money to prepare, the help to support it, the capacity to plan and risk assess and a lot are mentally ill, have addictions, are old and frail and so on. They need workers.

I suppose middle class people with the money, time, space, capacity and organisation to plan can do it. For everyone else, it's a ridiculous idea until it's actually needed. Urgently and for a short amount of time. It's not Ebola FFS.

titchy · 07/03/2020 22:13

I think we should lockdown for 3 weeks now

Then what? What's going to be different in three weeks time?

titchy · 07/03/2020 22:14

Oh and just because a petition gets 100k signatures doesn't mean it gets debated btw. Lots are rejected for being utter tosh even with large numbers of signatories.

Devlesko · 07/03/2020 22:22

I suppose we'll just see how the kids in Italy manage from tomorrow then. I wonder how many parents will brave the Police.
Some of us would have preferred to have ended up with fewer cases, but if you have your head in the sand, it might not happen for us in the UK, we're different Grin

Babytigerrr · 07/03/2020 22:27

Theyre not under house arrest though?

Babytigerrr · 07/03/2020 22:29

As far as i can see (news!) Theyre stopping people entering and leaving lombardy and banning events and get togethers and closing pubs and cinemas etc.

I cant see that it says youll get arrested on the spot for nipping round your mates.

Doesnt say anything about offices and shops being closed so presumably theyre not?

Vintage2020 · 07/03/2020 22:52

I have a new petition “quarantine” all the kids in the schools for let’s say 6 months? Meanwhile we adults can be freeeeeeeeeeee

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/03/2020 00:04

I suppose we'll just see how the kids in Italy manage from tomorrow then.

Having lived there I'll tell you they will do exactly as they please. They are not a rule bound people!

Greggers2017 · 08/03/2020 06:35

@Devlesko you aren't listening though are you? It's not realistic for people to be on lockdown. People need to live,
I'm in the same boat as the lady who works in housing. My service users cannot afford to prep. They need to go out to buy essentials and gas and electric. If they don't get their prescription for their drug substitute, they will be out shoplifting to find their habit to buy heroin. They have mental health issues. They need those appointment too. I am not being responsible for their deaths so I need to go to work. And that's just my job. There's thousands of others in the same situation.

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 08/03/2020 09:24

As long as school staff don't have to stay with them! A job for the PTA I think.Grin

Lotuscup563 · 08/03/2020 09:58

People who are shouting that this is bonkers do realise that at some point the schools WILL close?

The argument is not if the shoukd close, but if they should close now, rather than later.

People who are saying about work, childcare and GCSE children.....what do you think is going to happen when the majority of the country is sick because the virus was allowed to spread?

It’s true that the government believe money is more important than lives when it comes to the virus. To be fair it is true, as the county and it’s people need money....but the truth still hurts, especially if it’s you who loses a loved one.
