Controversial topic, I know, but there's a petition here for those who think schools should close.

Don't be ridiculous. Get a grip.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 06/03/2020 18:33

Done, mainly because I think the government needs to know we think they aren’t taking it seriously enough.

The government is doing what it’s being advised to do by the experts. Decisions are being made based on what the evidence base shows is worth doing and what isn’t worth doing.

I’d be more worried if the government had gone off piste and had started developing policy based on public opinion.

Nicepud · 06/03/2020 18:33

I've signed but I don't actually want them to close all schools.

I want them to consider removing the fines for absence temporarily, so that those parents who can take their dc out of schools do so. This would benefit everyone.

Less pressure on schools and less likely it will spread to those parents who can't take their dc out.

fallfallfall · 06/03/2020 18:33

You do realize the Spanish Flu lasted 3 years? And is still around.
Although kids tend to spread germs they seem to be fairing well.
All those with co-morbidities should choose their activities wisely. Limit hospital and long term care VISITORS.

bellinisurge · 06/03/2020 18:33

General prepper here who trusts the chief medical officer. More than Johnson, tbh.

ByAppointmentTo · 06/03/2020 18:33

Ridiculous idea.

Cinammoncake · 06/03/2020 18:34

They'll try to work out when the peak is and may close schools then presumably. They can't keep schools closed for months.

NoveltyFunsy · 06/03/2020 18:34

Oh for goodness sake

LEELULUMPKIN · 06/03/2020 18:39

I'll sign if you look after my Ds OP.

tempester28 · 06/03/2020 18:42

Who started it?

nat190 · 06/03/2020 18:48

Would it be more likely that a petition similar to the one linked at the bottom of this message would get approved?

The government will answer the current .gov petition by saying "yes they will consider it" whereas the one below allows parents who can remove their children from school temporarily, to do so, which will ease the spread without causing major disruptions to those who can't.

This would be a better compromise as it would reduce class sizes, rather than the government's idea of increasing them, and so forth. It would protect parents/carers who are vulnerable and would allow the schools to start thinking more actively about how they can provide access to school work to be completed and so on.

Deelish75 · 06/03/2020 18:50

No, just no.

CallmeAngelina · 06/03/2020 18:52

I'm a teacher. Despite being heading closer to retirement and therefore nearer to the age-group that is most at risk of this virus, I am still willing to take my chances against the germy Super-Spreaders that small children are.
If you wish to take your children out of school for what could be months, then as far as I'm concerned, you can go ahead. Fewer books to mark for me! But I think we should be continuing to provide education for children whose parents wish it - and need it.
Mind you, some proper hand-soap in the classrooms would be nice.

Sweetpea84 · 06/03/2020 18:52

God no. I’ll go mad stuck in doors with a 4 year old.

DivGirl · 06/03/2020 18:52

Of course we should be closing schools, kids are super spreaders. We should also be cancelling all large gatherings, halting all travel, and issuing hazmat suits on prescription. Hospitals are full of sick and old people let's close them too, the nurses and doctors will be at home looking after their kids anyway.

Or we could all relax and trust people who do emergency planning as their actual job. We're probably all going to catch this thing, some people are going to die. It's sad but in all honesty we can't continue hoping everyone will live indefinitely. Throughout history there have been large scale outbreaks which have brought the population under control somewhat.

CallmeAngelina · 06/03/2020 18:53

Harsh, but true, DivGirl.

reginafelangee · 06/03/2020 18:55

Folk need to calm down.

LEELULUMPKIN · 06/03/2020 18:55

See, that's my take on it DivGirl. Nature always finds a way.

Jackiebrambles · 06/03/2020 18:58

Started by someone who doesn't have a job I presume. Ffs

fallfallfall · 06/03/2020 18:58

Greta is probably grinning from ear to ear. Kids not in school, decreases air travel and carriers, a minuscule decrease in the population. Win win win on the environmental front.

coconuttelegraph · 06/03/2020 18:59

Done, mainly because I think the government needs to know we think they aren’t taking it seriously enough

What do you mean by we @TheMammothHunters, you don't speak for all of us, by all means sign it for yourself but don't assume you know what everyone else thinks

PickAChew · 06/03/2020 18:59

Aye, let's just hole ourselves up for the next 18 months, eh? No risk of catching a virus that's pretty innocuous to the majority of otherwise healthy people, then. OK so the infrastructure of the entire country will have collapsed and, if we haven't starved to death with no way of getting food, we'll all have lousy muscle tone from lack of exercise and thousands of people will probably die of an embolism from said lack of activity, but at least we won't have COVID-19.

Stroll on

Sirzy · 06/03/2020 19:00

Mad idea! And I say that as the mum of an immunosuppressed child. He had an appointment yesterday at a hospital where a child has had a confirmed case - should they shut the hospital too?

The biggest issue at the moment isn’t the illness it’s the level of hysteria

Inthemuckheap · 06/03/2020 19:01

That's ridiculous. How to bring the country to its knees by taking a huge number of the working population out to look after their children. Economically bonkers.

bellinisurge · 06/03/2020 19:02

I'm a know it all Wink but I don't know better than the chief medical officer.
