Controversial topic, I know, but there's a petition here for those who think schools should close.

What a ridiculous idea. Is there a petition for schools to be kept open? Some of us have kids doing exams.

Dagnabit · 06/03/2020 20:42

I presume all the people signing don't have to worry about childcare or going to work Hmm

You can make a petition about any old crap these days! Why don't we listen to the ones who act know what they're talking about?

johnwayneisbigleggy · 06/03/2020 21:06

For goodness sake - stop spreading panic. How do you propose people who have to work are supposed to cope if children are at home? Utterly ridiculous.

stophuggingme · 06/03/2020 21:09

@StealthPolarBear

Cracking point Grin

stophuggingme · 06/03/2020 21:11

I’m going to start a petition to ask Parliament to invoke emergency legislation to place all the panic buyers and doomsday-ers in a giant compound made to look like a bottle of hand sanitiser or a toilet roll so the rest of us can all be left in peace to crack on with the day to day

StealthPolarBear · 06/03/2020 21:13

I think I'll start a petition to get all forty year old women with ginger hair an extra day off each week. Who is with me?

LuluJakey1 · 06/03/2020 21:13

Ridiculous petition. One person in the north-east has been diagnosed as having coronavirus. This would be a completely mad reaction and would cause chaos and panic.

stophuggingme · 06/03/2020 21:16

I will sign it @StealthPolarBear only if you incorporate 45 year old single mothers of three to have a night nanny and an extra gin ration Wink

CheekyMango · 06/03/2020 21:18

It's just an excuse to not go into work...

Dagnabit · 06/03/2020 21:28

@StealthPolarBear - I'm 44 but happy to dye my hair ginger if I can have a piece of that action!

StealthPolarBear · 06/03/2020 21:52

Oh yes free wine too plese

Patchworkpatty · 06/03/2020 22:03

Just interested to know what all the people saying 'ridiculous- who is going to run the NHS, care homes, essential services' ... etc ' are going to do WHEN the schools are shut down.. ? Because you only have to listen to the CMO to know that all those planning in government ARE expecting an epidemic and Are Expecting these type of contingency measures ? It's really clear. They are saying not IF but WHEN.

.. and on that basis . surely it would be better to do it now and prevent a rapid spread than later when all the hospitals are full and more of the general population have the virus. ?

SallyLovesCheese · 06/03/2020 22:20

If all the schools are closed then they also need to close all the places where children will otherwise congregate when their parents wonder what to do with them all day every day, eg. soft play, trampoline parks, theme parks, leisure centres, coffee shops, libraries, actually all shops.

Because no parent is going to keep their children at home the whole time, are they? Then, all those people who are more likely to suffer with the virus, and who perhaps usually don't come into contact with children much as they're usually at school, will suddenly find an influx of children all over the place, all day, every day.

I'm not sure sending all the children in the country out into the world every day is going to help stop the virus.

How many of you who've signed will keep your children home to help prevent the virus spreading? Really?

wanderings · 06/03/2020 22:26

@fallfallfall Oh yes, Greta must be loving it (or whoever is pulling her strings - I'm not convinced it's her, but that's another debate). Funny how she's keeping her mouth shut for once. Wink

Also Prince Philip. Among the many silly thing he has said, didn't he once say "I would like to be reincarnated as a deadly virus, to do something about overpopulation"?

Devlesko · 06/03/2020 22:27

I think they're closing one by one anyway, even for deep cleaning.
One near us has closed, 3 confirmed cases, it will be open again soon and on it will go.

Nicepud · 06/03/2020 22:55

Well at least it looks like it's going to hit 100,000 pretty soon.

Hopefully they discuss options.

I'm sorry, but people are going to have to figure out what they will do when the schools do close. It is almost impossible now that we will avoid an epidemic. And it isn't just a cold, or just a flu.

Unless you think our governments way of containment is working or that British people have magical immune systems you must know that it is extremely likely we will follow the patterns of our European neighbours.

Some people are just arguing it should happen sooner rather than later.

SallyLovesCheese · 06/03/2020 23:16

But I don't understand, why close schools? Wouldn't closing all other sites where people congregate also have to happen? What good will it do, sending all the children in the country out in public rather than being semi-contained at school?

Genuine question. I don't understand the logic behind this.

Devlesko · 07/03/2020 12:32

Up to 123k, will definitely be debated, but not holding breathe as stated before, money and capitalism more important than life, in this country.

Thisismytimetoshine · 07/03/2020 12:42

As Sally, says, how would it help? If anyone thinks having all the country’s school aged children out on the streets 24/7 is an aid to containment of the virus, they’re barking.
Hopefully expert opinion will be sought before the government respond to this ill advised nonsense.

Devlesko · 07/03/2020 15:48

Duh! kids would be in the house with a parent, that would have the spread. Other parents could work from home. We'd only need essential workers going in.
By not containing it now we are just postponing it, so we end up with a peak in the middle of GCSE's, yeh great planning we'll all be off sick together and the country will come to a halt.
The world is Barking.

Babytigerrr · 07/03/2020 16:47

Duh! kids would be in the house with a parent, that would have the spread

Do you really wholeheartedly believe thats what would happen?

I really dont.

I think childminders will end up over ratio and people will look after friends and families kids.

Kids will still mix. People cannot just stay at home. People have bills to pay!

Greggers2017 · 07/03/2020 17:44

@Devlesko you do realise there are for more essential jobs than what you think don't you?
My children have 4 parents, I'm a drugs worker, my clients will still need their methadone; their step-dad works for probation, his offenders still need monitoring; their dad is a power station engineer, we strill need electricity; their step-mum is a pharmacist, people still need medication.
None of those jobs can be done from home.

Devlesko · 07/03/2020 17:50

I don't know because I don't know what you think I don't know.
what a stupid question.

surely they aren't the only ones doing their job, and it will be even harder with many of their colleagues off ill, and when they are ill themselves because we didn't slow it down.

Thisismytimetoshine · 07/03/2020 17:53

It really wasn’t a stupid question, Devlesko. It’s quite apparent that you don’t know half enough to be spouting about it on the Internet 🤣

Babytigerrr · 07/03/2020 18:02

So we keep kids out of school. For how long?

2 weeks? A month? 6 months?
