Controversial topic, I know, but there's a petition here for those who think schools should close.

Close the schools?

Are you advocating this OP, so those in the front line, how are they supposed to providde child care and front line servicce as the same time?

Hmm somebody left a lightbub somewhere!

bluehighlighter · 06/03/2020 19:03

Barking that people are so worried about this but not about a no deal Brexit...

nat190 · 06/03/2020 19:03

@Jackiebrambles or they may be self employed and able to work from home. A luxury you may not have but reduced class sizes would also protect the children who are going to school.

TheoneandObi · 06/03/2020 19:06

I understand current thinking is that Easter holidays may be extended by a week to slow the spread. The disease can't be stopped, but slowing it would have huge benefits. So this measure might be sensible, particularly at primary or at least pre GCSE level. This came from a Head I know who says its being considered. If that's the case it will
Be being modelled and examined as an idea by people who have expertise. Let's leave it to them!

quiteathome · 06/03/2020 19:07

If you want to keep your children off then do so. Please let life continue as normal as it can for the rest of us.

quiteathome · 06/03/2020 19:08

I will listen to the experts as much as I can.

Selfsettling3 · 06/03/2020 19:08

“All those with co-morbidities should choose their activities wisely. Limit hospital and long term care VISITORS.”

  • The problem with that is for some of those people is they will have multiple hospital appointments and will need multiple visits a day from carers.

I don’t think they should close schools. I have considered going to buy some things to keep my 3 year old occupied if she is off school nursery or if we were in lock down.

fixitma · 06/03/2020 19:08

If schools are closing anyway then let’s just get on with it. It can only be more effective earlier rather than later. Hopefully then it’s needed for a shorter time. I would rather club together with one or two other parents to share childcare than see people on ventilators or worse. As for exams, it’s a global emergency - we can make adjustments for exam dates or grades later. If there’s a chance to stop this thing then we have to try.

Devlesko · 06/03/2020 19:09

It won't make any difference, but I'll sign.
I can't believe we aren't doing more tbh. But the gov won't close schools until it's too late, we live in a society where money is more important than health.

CalleighDoodle · 06/03/2020 19:09

Was the petition created by teachers? Grin

EmbarrassingMama · 06/03/2020 19:10

Idiots. Hmm

namechangehelp · 06/03/2020 19:10

Because that will be oh so helpful to working parents 🙄

Devlesko · 06/03/2020 19:11

OMG nearly 30K signatures, come on folks.

fallfallfall · 06/03/2020 19:12

selfsetting3 not clients/patients but the family and friends who often visit hospitals and care facilities. People who drag along toddlers to see great gran often accompanied with the family dog.

KittenVsBox · 06/03/2020 19:14

At 18.27 someone said nearly 10,000 had signed.
At quarter past 7 (45 mins later) it's close to 30,000.
I suspect it will get the 100,000 names required for a commons discussion soon!

nellodee · 06/03/2020 19:14

The things is, if we can only close schools for, say, a 3 week stretch, it would be better to do it now to limit spread. I know we always need nurses, but we won't need them as much now as we will later.

Anti-intuitive as it may be, I think it's better to close sooner than at the peak. Closing schools at the peak will do nothing to stop spread.

My maths earlier was too complicated. Lets say we can halt spread totally for 3 weeks by closing schools.

Do you want:
New infections:
1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 Total cases = 34
1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 16, 16 Total cases = 63

If you freeze growth early, you get less total cases than freezing it at the peak.

CottonSock · 06/03/2020 19:14

Maybe it was started by a teacher (almost lightharted)

JayAlfredPrufrock · 06/03/2020 19:15

Ha ha ha.

People will die.

People die every day.

waltzingparrot · 06/03/2020 19:15

Bet my 15yr old has signed it 😁

scaevola · 06/03/2020 19:18

By the time the government find time in the parliamentary calendar for a debate, the issue will have been completely overtaken by events.

Interesting post nellodee
The exponential rise in cases in Wuhan was very brief. Possibly because within a couple of days of that magnitude of daily increase, the Chinese imposed even more and much stricter quarantine restrictions; and a week or so after that, the daily number of new cases had dropped back significantly. No one will have had a chance to look at this properly, to scrutinise if it is likely to be caused not coincidence, and compare effectiveness of delaying measures (as each country will be doing it differently)

nat190 · 06/03/2020 19:19

@bellinisurge I'm not a know it all but I do know better than to cough into my hand like he did. Do we know if he cleaned the desk after?

Greggers2017 · 06/03/2020 19:20

What about all the jobs that have to keep going. It's not just emergency services. I'm a drugs worker, partner is a probation officer. Well stlll be needed. So will plumbers and shop workers and 1000s of other people. The country would be on its knees if no parents could work!

Greggers2017 · 06/03/2020 19:22

@waltzingparrot my son definitely has! He's had a cough for a few days and keeps trying to convince me he needs to self isolate 🙄

nellodee · 06/03/2020 19:23

Exponential growth doesn't go on forever. I hope it stops soon over here. I just think, if we don't shut schools, and we don't stop flights, and we don't close down big gatherings... well.... what exactly -are- we doing?

Thisismytimetoshine · 06/03/2020 19:24

It’s exam season, wind your silly neck in.
