Thread on this here:

twitter.com/SafeSchools_UK/status/1161957169731911681?s=20

Sadly this doesn't surprise me. My daughter won't sit upstairs on the bus because all the boys are watching porn on their phones making it a hostile and unsafe environment for her and her friends. SSAUK are calling on the Department of Education to do something about this. Lots of MPs have been tagged in this thread so please share it if you are on Twitter. Its on Facebook too - www.facebook.com/safeschoolsallianceuk

If you don't think I am BU please share and send to your MPs flagging the urgency of the situation.

I am dreading my daughter going to secondary school because of this. YA Absolutely NBU.

YouJustDoYou · 15/08/2019 14:03

Even back in the 90s when I was in school (and there were no phones therefore phone porn etc) the boys were just awful. Who had the biggest tits (we were 13, 14 for fucks sake), etc, it never stopped. I seriously fear for my girls at secondary school. The young boys are so innocent and sweet at the moment at my young ds's age, and it all changes for some of them. It's just horrifying that at so young an age they start to do stuff like that.

GColdtimer · 15/08/2019 14:21

I know, it was bad enough in the 80s and 90s. If I imagine some of those boys with easy access to porn 24 x 7 it's horrific. My daughter took ages before she would tell me why she tried to get not he single decker bus. Loads of girls crowding on to one single decker whilst the double deckers left half empty.

Problem is if everything is priority, then nothing I say a priority.
I agree revenge porn a problem, but to me the priority is stopping all these kids from being stabbed to death.

Kitsandkids · 15/08/2019 14:38

Is it really that bad that boys on a bus now all openly watch porn on their phones?! That’s horrifying! I have two foster sons, one of whom starts secondary this year. He has no clue atm what porn is. The most he’s seen is Tom Hanks’ character briefly touching a clothed boob in the film ‘Big’ and he was a bit shocked about that! I hate the idea that he’ll see it on other boys’ phones. There’s no way I’ll be getting him a Smartphone at this age. For a variety of reasons but access to porn is one of them. But if this is so widespread I suppose it’s inevitable he’ll be shown it by someone else his age Sad

GColdtimer · 15/08/2019 14:41

If may dd was at a mixed secondary school I would be fearful for her safety every day and not because I was frightened someone would stab her. I would say that the rate of sexual violence against schools girls should make it a top priority. I don't think we are talking about an either or situation are we? Are you saying that MPs shouldn't tackle this until knife crime is sorted? I think they are two entirely different issues. Its like saying let's not research a cure for cancer until heart disease is eradicated.

araiwa · 15/08/2019 14:43

Im pretty sure sharing sexual images of an 11 year old is already illegal.

Revenge poŕn has also been illegal in uk since 2015.

Either could land you in jail

What exactly do you want doing?

GColdtimer · 15/08/2019 14:45

Kitsandkids, yep. It really is that bad. And its lowest common denominator stuff. Schools around here ban phones in school and have a zero tolerance policy on their use but still if your son is friends with a child who has no boundaries then yes, they are likely to be shown it. Age verification for porn sites are in development but have been delayed and I am unsure how robust them will be anyway.

GColdtimer · 15/08/2019 14:54

Have you read the Twitter thread in the OP araiwa? There are calls for people to call on their MPs to make age verification happen for porn sites, but also for the DofE to make a priority of tackling sexism and sexual harassment in schools. Some ideas here: ukfeminista.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Report-Its-just-everywhere.pdf?fbclid=IwAR2MDMGhzYIQl0JyrwLEpQHpDOWHO2yIn34RmGReN-W9TCJR3UidRJk9v0c

High quality PSHE and RSE teaching is crucial - kids need to be taught that distributing these images could put them on he sex offenders register for instance - as well as the concept of consent. So many teenagers have no concept of what that actually means because they have learnt all they need to do from porn. Problem is PSHE/RSE been hijacked by the teaching of more fashionable initiatives.

The thread also calls on Amber Rudd to fulfil Penny Mordaunts promise of an enquiry on why so many girl are identifying out of their sex. Personally I think its no wonder if they are growing up in such a hostile environment. It would be really useful if people could share this thread and tweet/write to their MPs about the fact girls are facing this in our schools is unacceptable.

It’s not “ revenge porn” it’s images of child abuse”.

GColdtimer · 15/08/2019 15:00

My DC, I would agree with you there. Revenge porn is the term used by the press.

Winsomelosesome · 15/08/2019 15:12

I do think educating children about porn, the dangers of sending nude photos and the legalities around these topics is up to parents. However I agree porn sites should be much harder to access because smart phones are here to stay. My 7 and 9 year old nephews were exposed to porn at after school club!

NeurotrashWarrior · 15/08/2019 15:14

Jesus yes.

NeurotrashWarrior · 15/08/2019 15:18

Absolutely.

The roots of all this are spread far and deep in so many areas of society; so much is normalised now.

There's been a few really shocking threads on mn about the effect on yp of porn.

"All the boys want to choke" is one chilling thread I remember.

Well done SSA.

joggerbottom · 15/08/2019 15:41

Yes, urgent action that should have taken place years ago.

I remember boys of 12/13 accessing websites with porn on class computers at break time back in 2002ish. The same little shits that liked to risk getting caught watching porn were also assaulting girls in school at the time and nothing was done about it.

This will never change unless the general public attitude towards it changes.

Scarydinosaurs · 15/08/2019 15:51

We need to get youporn to stop allowing anyone to upload, and using revenge porn as a category.

Sotiredofthislife · 15/08/2019 15:55

Such as? I have worked in schools across a 15 mile radius in the last 3 years (supply). This has been something on the PSHE curriculum in all three schools.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 15/08/2019 16:15

My son was shown the most horrible porn when he was only 11. He was really upset that when he got older he might have to do what he'd seen on screen.

He's a sweet, gentle young man now but I hate to think of the harm watching this vile stuff is doing to boys - who are then doing even worse things to girl.

The government needs to address this as a matter of great urgency.

Sunkisses · 15/08/2019 16:19

I think parents are sleepwalking into this by dishing out smartphones to kids, allowing them to go on social media, without thinking it through. Within 8 seconds any kid with a smartphone can click through to horrific FREE, violent, misogynistic porn (the most searched for items are rape, torture, choking and 'barely legal' (i.e paedophilia). Parents have literally no idea. And once this stuff is seen it cannot be unseen. My DD is about to start year 7 and I've given her a brick that can only do phone and text, and taught her that a phone is for emergency communications and arrangements only. If enough parents did this, there wouldn't be the huge peer pressure. I'm amazed at the otherwise sensible parents carelessly dishing out smartphones. Yes I do feel judgemental about this Grin

Whatisthisfuckery · 15/08/2019 16:33

Absolutely, and we need accurate stats about which sex of student is committing these offences, and the sex of the victims. Now it just gets passed off as peer on peer abuse, which is masking the problem, namely boys perpetrating against girls. It’s only when we have a true picture of the extent of the problem that politicians won’t be able to hide behind this peer on peer bullshit and we might finally get some meaningful action. I’m not holding my breath though.Society will always go out of its way to excuse, minimise and deny the extent of male violence.

NeurotrashWarrior · 15/08/2019 16:34

Dr Em wrote a horrifying piece about all this but I don't have the link.

MsTSwift · 15/08/2019 16:38

I think this is a social emergency second only to climate change.

I have sent both my girls to an all girls secondary. My dd and her friends are noticeably more confident than their female peers at the equivalent mixed school. Both schools state btw.
