Women can't consent to death - Natalie Connolly is not alone

WomanDaresTo · 24/12/2018 11:40

Natalie Connolly's case is not unique.

Over on feminism chat we've found many of UK cases of men claiming that women they have killed consented to it as part of rough/kinky sex game gone wrong.

You can see them here: www.wecantconsenttothis.uk/

Often, that defence works - especially recently when the women or girls are young, and often when man who kills them has just met them.

WIBU I ask you to sign the petitions, write to the Attorney General on Natalie Connolly's killer's sentence, and also let us know on this thread if you know of more cases like this.

Searching your local newspapers would be so helpful - especially those newspapers which might not be particularly online yet. These cases often attract little wider attention.

and WWBU to ask @MNHQ to think about a campaign on this?

[oh and merry Christmas, and Flowers to all the women and those who loved them]

Scary how this really is becoming a 'thing'.

We really do need to push back against this, it really is the most extreme form of victim blaming.

BoreOfWhabylon · 24/12/2018 11:52

YANBU

Here's an excellent letter to the Attorney General about the Natalie Connolly sentence

www.laurarichards.co.uk/featured/misogyny-at-its-worst-hernamewasnatalieconnolly/

I too hope @MNHQ will campaign against the "she liked rough sex" defence in the New Year.

feministfairy · 24/12/2018 12:34

It would be great if MNHQ would get behind this. Natalie's case is unbelievably awful - she was murdered in the most terrible way by one man and then failed by a whole system, including a Judge .

In an increasingly porn soaked world, we owe it to our daughters and sons to make sure that the "rough sex gone wrong" defence is binned forever.

SoleBizzz · 24/12/2018 16:07

I have read the heartbreaking link. The evil bastards are getting away with their murderous crimes. Signed.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 24/12/2018 16:10

Bumping. Signing is at least one thing we can give Natalie's family this Christmas.

Theswaggyotter · 24/12/2018 16:19

Thanks for flagging this and I agree would be a great campaign for mnhq to get on board with
I’ll be signing too, for Natalie and all the other women who have died in such violence circumstances

PatPhoenix · 24/12/2018 16:30

Terrible link. I'm glad to have read it, I think.

The only chink of light is that so many of these men's defences actually failed and they received a sentence that looked something like justice.

sackrifice · 24/12/2018 16:37

Signed and shared.

MNHQ need to get right onto this.

Missingstreetlife · 24/12/2018 16:46

That's surely a life sentence even if they get away with manslaughter(sic). There are some things people do which you can't imagine consent for, but it isn't legal to maim and kill in any case.
Bastards lie and lie.what kind of man would be party to that

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 24/12/2018 16:55

How dare they! By which I mean the barristers and CPS who accept this unbelievable defence with no evidence. Will sign and write after Christmas.

MulticolourMophead · 24/12/2018 17:02

Signed.

firawla · 24/12/2018 17:08

Signed thank you for sharing this

Coldhandscoldheart · 24/12/2018 17:08

I didn’t see India Chipchase. Another young woman murdered by someone she just met.
Bloody awful all of it.

Thesearmsofmine · 24/12/2018 17:11

Reading about what happened to Natalie made my blood run cold. He should rot in jail.

Graphista · 24/12/2018 17:20

I've been following (for lack of a better descriptor) this case elsewhere.

It's clear to anyone with an ounce of common sense that he's lying through his teeth!

And for the fact that even though guilty of manslaughter he's been given an outrageously minimal sentence. Basically he'll be free again in less than 2 years to quite possibly batter maybe even kill another woman.

I've emailed the AG. I get he probably won't personally read every email but it's a direct route to someone who can actually make a difference not only in this case but all similar cases and I'm hoping if enough of us contact him the volume of communications will hopefully motivate him to address this.

I'm no fan of tories but the one thing they're supposed to be good on is crime & punishment!

Personally I think 10 years for manslaughter should be the minimum not the max!

As mother to a dd who is now at an age of being sexually active such news items are terrifying to see!

As a society we desperately need to make sure people like Natalie's killer KNOW it is completely unacceptable to behave like this, that it won't be tolerated no matter how much money & influence you have!

PartTimePunk · 24/12/2018 17:22

MNHQ please do get behind this campaign

Lilimoon · 24/12/2018 17:28

Signed. MNHQ please get involved with this campaign.

LilyMumsnet · 24/12/2018 18:04

Hi there OP

We're going to have to move your thread over to the petitions topic now.

We'll forward it to our campaigns team but in future, posting in the petitions topic and seeing if there's a lot of support, is generally the best way for us to decide on new campaigns.

Merry Christmas all. Flowers

PoliticalBiscuit · 24/12/2018 18:20

What's the maximum sentence he could have received?

PartTimePunk · 24/12/2018 20:34

Would it not get much more attention where it was?

I've been on Mn for an age and I hadn't a notion there was a petitions board.
