Apologies if this has already done the circuits (I'm sure it has, but I've had a look and can't see it) but here's the link to the petition calling for a revote as less than 75% of the population voted and the margin was so tight.

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/131215

AIBU to think that its perfectly reasonable to expect a revote considering that in less than 4 hours after the results, the Leave campaign backed out of some of their most significant promises?

Ok that Mirror link is hilarious (if it's reported accurately).

In Farage's own eyes, the british have 'unfinished business' because the vote was so close!

howtorebuild · 25/06/2016 19:35

The EU does have the power to suspend any member state, under Article 7, if the state breaches any of the EU's principles. Democracy is a principal, so if the democratic referendum isn't accepted, we are out.

Rosie0987 · 25/06/2016 19:37

Good for you!

I've signed the petition - something as important of taking us out of a continental community that we've been a member of for most people whole life should require a significant majority of the population such as the 65 % of the whole population and not 53% of 72% of the population, especially when the younger generation have to live with it for all their life and have their continent take away from them not just their country.

It too important to make a snap decision - If the leaves are confident of the democratic decision they will be happy to put it to a second democratic process especially now some of the lies have been exposed.

Can I also point something out.

Hell of a lot of my eastern European friend on FB signing and passing around this petition and also quite a few of my nephew's friends (under 15).

It's not exactly like two million suddenly regretful brexit voters are signing it....

howtorebuild · 25/06/2016 20:15

It doesn't surprise me. So cheats, kids and non UK citizens blocking democracy. The list of those who signed can be obtained by a FOI and will be used in legal action by Brexiter if the referendum isn't accepted.

Oh they won't category about that as long as it leads to them getting their own way.

Democracy in action right there

Well at least we have our new Remain slogan;

Knocking off pensioners, educating the poor and stamping our feet, till we remain.

Vote remain!

Allisgood1 · 25/06/2016 20:47

Were you a Remain campaigner? Are you sore about the referendum result? Check out these 10 top self-comforting strategies.

1.) Call every white person who voted Leave a "racist", ignoring the fact that Europeans are also white. Make sure you ignore and marginalise ethnic minority leave voters.

2.) Claim that the (huge) turnout wasn't high enough. 72%? It should have been at least 75%! 80%? It should have been 85%! Make sure to keep moving the goalposts.

3.) Make a stupid e-petition demanding another referendum, just like the socialists did when Labour lost last year. We need to keep having referendums until we get the "right" result.

4.) Get over-excited about the economy, even if the impact has been pretty boring and mundane. Pretend that your 2:2 in English Literature makes you an expert on currency markets.

5.) Attack the very idea of Democracy, because it's only a good thing when it goes the way you want it to. Working class voters don't know what's good for them, but middle class liberals definitely do.

6.) Share memes bashing Brexit, ignoring the unwelcome and uncomfortable realisation that you are in the minority of public opinion.

7.) Boldly claim that Scotland will leave the UK, forgetting that A) they can't afford to B) the EU can't afford to take them C) 1.6m remain votes don't cancel out 2m NO votes.

8.) Make fun of Boris Johnson while sweating slightly and really hoping he doesn't become Prime Minister.

9.) Learn absolutely nothing from the campaign, blaming the result on everyone but yourself. Scaremongering and bullying are clearly the best tactics to use, there's no way they could possibly backfire.

10.) Curl up in a ball and cry yourself to sleep while listening to "Ode to Joy".

Reapwhatyousow · 25/06/2016 20:58

Allisgood1 - that sums it up for me. I was appalled at the histrionics of the Remain (students?) today in London and say that I for one am glad that the future is not in the hands (yet) of the 18-24 age group with their limited knowledge and experience of real life and adult responsibility.

SeaEagleFeather · 25/06/2016 21:05

reapwhatyousow your name is so apposite :/

NewLife4Me · 25/06/2016 21:23

Can we have a rematch for the Euro footie, you know for the teams that lost, ffs some of you need a grip.

johnofwhixall · 25/06/2016 21:34

Although I'm a member of the slightly smaller half of the UK and am going to stay European at all costs I'm not looking forward to actually selling up and shipping out so I'm not prepared to grant the Brexit mob victory easily After all its the country of the young and with 75% of the young people voting to stay in we owe it to them to give the old farts that voted for leave a b* good run for their money

CateNoviceBaker · 25/06/2016 21:56

The fact that the biggest googled phrase at 10pm after the voting had closed was "what is the EU?" is terrifying.
Isn't Google available globally? People from China to Russia could have been researching 'what is the EU?' after seeing the news stories about our referendum. Just a thought, unless you are saying that the phase was googled in the UK.

Britnyspears · 25/06/2016 22:14

Can't I change my vote for Blair in 1996 please?
ffs!

OhTheRoses · 25/06/2016 22:19

You'd have a job. It was 1997.

Britnyspears · 25/06/2016 22:20

Allisgood1 I salute you

sandrabedminster · 25/06/2016 22:22

If it got more names than the Leave vote then it would have full legitimacy I guess, but that's unlikely to happen.

Not at all. Lots of people are signing it multiple times and people signing it that aren't elligable to vote.

Could have 50m and means nothing.

AppleSetsSail · 25/06/2016 22:25

Allisgood, nicely done. I particularly liked:

Pretend that your 2:2 in English Literature makes you an expert on currency markets.

akkakk · 25/06/2016 22:29

So it would be more democratic to take notice of 2 million signing an unofficial petition which has no identity checks...

Than to take notice of the majority vote of over 33 million people...

How silly...

So basically everyone signing that petition is saying that a vote is only democratic when it fits with their view - how arrogant...

How do you confirm that all those 2 million people are a) genuine unique individuals and b) all eligible to actually vote?

If it doesn't raise over 16 million signatories can we assume that many of those who voted remain no longer have that view? Or could the others be the many decent people who voted remain and accept democracy even when a vote doesn't go the way they want...?

And what would be the point of a second referendum? 65% of the eligible population voted to leave or didn't care enough to vote to remain... Is that really going to change?

His is another sign of those internet random viral trends based on a total lack of logic and a false belief that somehow the government will be forced to respond to it if enough sign it - totally wrong...

What nonsense, some people need to grow up and accept the results of a legal valid vote with a majority of over 1.5 million people... A clear result... I am just glad to see all those who are honourable and accept the result even though it wasn't their personal choice, those are the ones I respect...

howtorebuild · 25/06/2016 22:34

That petition is invalidated by all those singing who are outside the UK and not British citizens. Only a few exceptions were made to vote with British citizens.

That petition has made a mockery of many legitimate petitions.

Reapwhatyousow · 25/06/2016 23:35

Agreed, one has to question the integrity of a University education in the UK if the majority of Remainers think this "petition" is in any way valid.

Rosie0987 · 26/06/2016 07:11

The petition was put up by a leave right wing activist in Leicester as he thought there might be a marginal remain vote which he thought would be unfair and democratic for such a momentous change to our constitution for decades to come - unfortunately the petition has assisted the remain campaign instead

The country is democratic and as such you can start an alternative petition to accept the minority leave decision if you feel it's a threat

We all have to accept the rule of law which at present this isn't and up to the time it is we can all continue to reflect our views

and you point is?
It my foot and I'll stamp it as embarrassingly as I can!

blitheringbuzzards1234 · 26/06/2016 08:03

I can see your point(s), Allisgood, may I add that if we get another go at this Jeremy Vine will get so over-excited that he'll probably self-combust and we really don't want to see that do we?
