Apologies if this has already done the circuits (I'm sure it has, but I've had a look and can't see it) but here's the link to the petition calling for a revote as less than 75% of the population voted and the margin was so tight.

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/131215

AIBU to think that its perfectly reasonable to expect a revote considering that in less than 4 hours after the results, the Leave campaign backed out of some of their most significant promises?

oranges

I want a decision based on a clear strategy from the leave camp as to what the alternative will be.

I want a decision not solely based on a misunderstanding of how the migration issue can be addressed.

I want a decision that people don't wake up and think what the fucking did I just do, as seems to be the growing case.

I want a decision based on sound economic, security and social welfare planning. Not spurious claims made on the side of buses that are untenable.

That's what I want for the future of the UK.

CathemeralChild · 25/06/2016 17:10

You do realise that even if there were to be a second referendum, all Leave would have to do is NOT vote.
Then Remain would never get the 75% turnout to overturn the decision.

SeasonalVag · 25/06/2016 17:18

I think the only way it could be held again would be if there had been deceit at play....surely they can't just promise any old crap and do a uturn immediately as farage did yesterday am??

rookiemere · 25/06/2016 17:24

I've signed it because, well why not I suppose. But I do feel very uneasy about the idea. If it got more names than the Leave vote then it would have full legitimacy I guess, but that's unlikely to happen.

However SNP appears to have no shame in demanding a second referendum because they don't like the results of the first one, so why not.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 25/06/2016 17:27

If you look at the map, lots of signatures are from Brexit areas.

PanEuropeanPan · 25/06/2016 17:37

I signed as I am simply not prepared to let my 16yo dd's life chances and options be heavily influenced by the votes of the ill-informed and hood-winked electorate regarding what they were actually voting for.

As well as allowing the nasty, stupid xenophobia that the Leave campaign engendered to be part of her future life. In my teens I was on the streets of Manchester fighting (twice literally) the National Front (and often the police) on principles of fairness and anti-racism (Anti-Nazi League/Rock Against Racism anyone?)- a struggle , which I had hoped dd would never have to face.

rookiemere · 25/06/2016 17:38

But why is that important Chardonnay ?

In all areas even those that voted to Leave, there were a proportion of Remain voters who are presumably signing this.

If there were over a million signatures or whatever the margin was from people with their name, address and voting ID saying I voted Leave and it's a terrible mistake, I'm so sorry then that would mean something I suppose. Or if some of the almost 30% who couldn't be arsed voting were to sign then that might make a difference. But 2 million of us who already were outvoted less than 48 hrs ago, not sure to be honest.

OrangesandLemonsNow · 25/06/2016 17:38

If you look at the map, lots of signatures are from Brexit areas.

Where I assume Remainers voted. I don't recall there being any area that was 100% leave.

My friend has signed it. They were remain. This area voted leave.

Kennington · 25/06/2016 17:44

I think this is daft. So what happens next? We have another referendum and we get a 'remain' result. Then the leave campaign petitions for another referendum and so on.
It was unfortunately a clear win for exit. It wasn't 'close' and the turn out was much higher than average.
Democracy has these limitations but I don't see the point of a second referendum. It might result in an even higher exit vote than now.

Livingtothefull · 25/06/2016 17:46

I have signed the petition and urge as many as possible to sign. If enough people sign then I don't see how it can be ignored, petitions are a part of the democratic process too. It is heading towards 1.9 million now on the petition.

I think that this is a disastrous outcome for my country. So I can't, won't just roll over and accept it & make no apologies for opposing this any way I can.

This is just too momentous an outcome to hinge on a single minority vote, especially when the result was so narrow. It is not like a general election which can be repeated & rectified a few years down the line; this is a once & forever decision (there is no guarantee that the EU would accept us back should we reapply in the future).

So the consequences of this are enormous and we will have to live with them for generations to come…quite apart from the fact that it seems that the Brexit campaigners peddled (acknowledged by them) lies.

BurnTheBlackSuit · 25/06/2016 17:53

When the petition reaches 17,410,743 registered voters then maybe we should have another referendum.

Until then, no.

PanEuropeanPan · 25/06/2016 17:58

Well hopefully Parliament will say "No, very few of your reps wanted this - thanks for your advice but no."

Livingtothefull · 25/06/2016 18:07

Well we will see how many sign then. Edging towards 2 million now & that is in less than 2 days.

Oliviaerinpope · 25/06/2016 18:08

I've signed it.

Livingtothefull · 25/06/2016 18:10

Thanks Oliviaerinpope

Kimononono · 25/06/2016 18:13

You do realise that even if there were to be a second referendum, all Leave would have to do is NOT vote
Then Remain would never get the 75% turnout to overturn the decision

See it's pointless.

PanEuropeanPan · 25/06/2016 18:18

yeas but they won't not vote. That would be irresponsible and Leavers can never be accused of that, can they?

Livingtothefull · 25/06/2016 18:22

That is hypothetical Kimono, who is to say that that would happen or that Leave would do that? Nobody knows what is going to happen next. But I don't even care whether it is pointless or not, I want to do what I can to oppose what I believe would be a disastrous outcome for this country.

Just coming up to 2 million signatures btw.

Allisgood1 · 25/06/2016 18:29

I cannot believe what I am reading on this forum.

DEMOCRACY IS NOT RUNNING AND RERUNNING A VOTE UNTIL YOU GET THE RESULT YOU WANT!!!!!

and the remainers had the gall to call anyone who voted leave stupid. The hypocrisy is breathtaking.

Livingtothefull · 25/06/2016 18:42

Why hypocrisy? This is what NF thought i.e. that a second referendum would be appropriate if the result was not a conclusive majority:

PanEuropeanPan · 25/06/2016 18:44

Well yes Nige supports a 2nd referendum. It;s very democratic!

rookiemere · 25/06/2016 18:46

DEMOCRACY IS NOT RUNNING AND RERUNNING A VOTE UNTIL YOU GET THE RESULT YOU WANT!!!!!

Someone should tell that to the SNP.

PanEuropeanPan · 25/06/2016 18:49

Well conditions materially change - and with the lying Remain scumbag lies being revealed as time goes by then they are material changes. So it's democratic to say 'try again - the last one was predicated on lies'. Sort of thing.

Also I think you're caps lock gets stuck on IF you were unaware.

PanEuropeanPan · 25/06/2016 18:50

or even the the "lying Leavers scumbag" !!

Livingtothefull · 25/06/2016 19:07

Up to 2.1 million signatures now. That is 100k more signatures in little over half an hour.
