Apologies if this has already done the circuits (I'm sure it has, but I've had a look and can't see it) but here's the link to the petition calling for a revote as less than 75% of the population voted and the margin was so tight.

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/131215

AIBU to think that its perfectly reasonable to expect a revote considering that in less than 4 hours after the results, the Leave campaign backed out of some of their most significant promises?

There have been cuts in education long before the referendum. I don't think this can be entirely blamed on the decision to leave the EU.

StandoutMop · 25/06/2016 14:36

I didn't sign it because I expect there to be another referendum. I signed as I wanted to put my name to not being in favour of leaving. Basically it was a place to say I'm not in agreement with the outcome.

I fully expect us to leave. On a long-term basis it will probably be neither as good or bad as either side predicted, but I don't expect leaving the EU to fix the problems that caused so many in this country to want to do that. The problem is with the whole political and economic system, and leaving the EU will not change that. (I suspect it will make it worse, but hope I'm wrong).

noblegiraffe · 25/06/2016 14:38

music it wasn't Nigel Farage saying that the money would be spent on the NHS. Look at Boris in front of his bus!

It would take ages to organise another referendum (remember there are legal obligations for them to follow if they did this - postal votes, more campaigns, opening up registration to vote again - it'd be at least another 6 months before it could be done), and all that uncertainty would spiral the country into further problems. The best way forward is to go with the democratic decision and move on.

GingerCuddleMonsterThe2nd · 25/06/2016 14:38

You honestly think the north and the Welsh valleys who feel completely betrayed by Westminster will be happy to have their votes overturned to have another go?!

The most disenfranchised and poorest of our country have used their democratic right to stage a riot and you want to dismiss it and think nothing will happen?! Talk about kicking someone when they are down!

OrangesandLemonsNow · 25/06/2016 14:40

Basically it was a place to say I'm not in agreement with the outcome.

Surely you did that by voting remain in the first place Confused

AristotlesTrousers · 25/06/2016 14:40

I've signed the petition too. Happy to do so. Smile

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 25/06/2016 14:40

The poorest will be even poorer. Labour should have been there to explain in, but JC could not be arsed.

Theirs was the majority of the protest vote.

Mooseboots · 25/06/2016 14:40

GingerCuddleMonsterThe2nd - Excuse me but i am part of the north and yes, i very much do believe that they would like to have another go, you dont live here clearly so you havent heard the conversations i have.
As already mentioned, they could always vote the same way again if that is truly what they believe in. No harm in that.

Muddlingthroughtoo · 25/06/2016 14:41

Oh Jesus get over it. We are leaving Europe, accept it and pull together or you are going to be in for a really bumpy ride.

RunRabbitRunRabbit · 25/06/2016 14:41

I am embarrassed at the undemocratic tendencies of so many of my fellow Remainers.

The majority voted Leave in a free and fair election with a huge turnout.

Leave voters didn't base their decision only on the stuff the campaigns came out with, any more than Remain voters did.

We all know that politicians and lobbyists twist and stretch the truth in electioneering.

In a liberal democracy you sometimes have to live with results you don't like, hell, that you even think are deeply damaging. We've all felt that way I'm sure when a Tory or Labour government gets in when we voted against them.

Focus your effort on making the best of where we are. Democracy works. Don't mess with it.

Bogeyface · 25/06/2016 14:42

But the voting system was flawed because the reasons for voting were based on lies

On that basis, every election there has ever been should be reheld.

And no one promised that the EU money would go to the NHS, it was said how much better it would be if that money went to the NHS. And it would be. But no one actually promised that that would happen.

YorkshireTeaDrinker · 25/06/2016 14:43

"That is there issue now what are we negotiating on. We have rejected the status quo, but the population did not vote for what was going to replace it. We urgently now need to do so."

This. I don't think we should re-run this referendum, but we must be allowed to vote on whether to accept or reject the terms of whatever EU exit plan is put together. The exit plan needs to be approved by at least 20 EU countries with 65% of the total EU population. I think a right and proper step after that is for it to be approved by the population of the country seeking exit.

GingerIvy · 25/06/2016 14:43

People seem to think the government will say "okay, we'll have a do-over. How's next Tuesday work for everyone?" and they'll just rock up to vote. It doesn't work that way.

Bogeyface · 25/06/2016 14:46

Its just so fucking patronising!

"I know you meant well, but I dont think that you really understand what you are doing so we are going to give you another chance to see if you can get it right this time!"

Bremainers are making themselves look far more prejudiced and bigotted than any of the Brexiters that they claim are racist and xenophobic!

GingerIvy · 25/06/2016 14:46

Slight flaw in voting to accept or reject the terms. Once it's set in motion, we have two years, unless EU agrees to let it go longer. They're hardly likely to do so, and frankly it's not in our best interests to do so. Once two years has hit, if there's no agreement to postpone it for more negotiations, that's it. We're out. Do you think the government wants to take chances with that? What if the voters say no, they don't agree, and effectively our time runs out, while EU says nope, no postponement. Not a chance the government will take that risk.

Reapwhatyousow · 25/06/2016 14:47

GingerCuddleMonsterThe2nd well said.
It will fall on deaf ears though, there are some formidable intellects egos expressed here. Oh, and they have degrees - ever so many of them and therefore qualified arrogant enough to explain in detail the facts of other people's lives and experiences. Thanks to an education system that indoctrinates our children.

speakergirl · 25/06/2016 14:48

Exactly Bogeyface. The true colours of remainers are coming out

Topseyt · 25/06/2016 14:49

I signed it last night, and so have my DDs.

It may not get anywhere, but I do think it is important, especially for the many, many young people who wanted to remain (voted for it in large numbers too) and feel disenfranchised by the older "leave" voters.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 25/06/2016 14:55

I think there could be a second vote a little further down the line based on some firmer proposals of what is on the table. Possibly a general election though rather than a referendum, if a Pro-Remain party or cross-party alliance can get their act together?

Anyway, have signed the petition as anything is worth a try to stay in and try to keep what we had - you don't know what you got til it's gone hey?! Referendum was "advisory", and I do think that many people were seriously misled by Leave sides empty promises.

GingerIvy · 25/06/2016 14:56

if they revoted every time politicians made empty promises, we'd not be sitting with a conservative government in number 10 right now.

WeirdAndPissedOff · 25/06/2016 14:56

I voted remain.
I spent weeks and weeks looking for good information that would support a leave campaign. I'm terrified at what we've done to the UK and potentially the EU, and of what the future holds now.
I'd love for there to be some way to change it.

However I won't be signing the petition. It is undemocratic - you can't just keep revoting if you don't like the result.
And it would cause even more uproar and unrest in a country that is already tearing itself apart. Same if the MPS decide to disregard the vote.

For better or worse we voted out. Now we all need to pull together and make it work, because no matter which way we voted we all want the best future possible, right?

GingerCuddleMonsterThe2nd · 25/06/2016 14:57

So what, were going to knock the pensioners off to get a remain vote?!

I live in Wales, I work in the Welsh valleys, the people are elated, they knew what they were doing, there not shagging sheep on a Monday and voting leave on Thursday you know Grin

The electorate has spoken, young and old accept it. A 2nd referendum would be a farce, undemocratic and will lead to upset.

GingerIvy · 25/06/2016 15:00

Another referendum would take ages. And that whole time would the country would be polarised all over again, only worse, as people would feel the government weren't recognising their first vote. It would be disastrous.

noblegiraffe · 25/06/2016 15:00

Will the Welsh people still be elated when they lose their EU funding though?
