Do you not believe in the concept of democracy, then? Or is it that you just don't like it if you don't get your own way.

user7755 · 25/06/2016 11:45

I think it's arguable that the referendum was democratic. So many people with a complete misunderstanding of the facts, or who thought that their vote somehow didn't count, or now regret how they voted.

How does that stop it being democratic? If people chose not to vote with the full facts and now regret it, that is their choice - if they choose not to vote, it's their choice - if they choose to vote for a perspective other than yours, it's their choice. That is democracy. Trying to overturn a vote because it didn't go your way, is not democratic. People doing this are really not helping anything.

GloriaGaynor · 25/06/2016 11:48

That isn't how democracy works

Sometimes democracy doesnt work.

The idea that a 4% majority on a 72% turnout is democracy is bizarre, particularly given the volume of leavers now regretting their vote, or only having voted in protest.

There's a reason referenda are banned in Germany - the Nazis manipulated popular ignorance to get results that they could claim were 'democratic' but were anything but. The German populace had no idea of the consequences of their votes, or what they were really voting for.

If you give a vote to an electorate many of who are not educated, informed or experienced enough to understand the issues, and in this case are angry with the government for reasons that are nothing to do with the EU, you will not get a representative or sensible result.

BeyondTellingEveryoneRealFacts · 25/06/2016 11:48

I am not going to accept leaving the EU without a fight, but neither am i signing a petiton for a second referendum.

The reasons we lost run much deeper than voter apathy and need to be addressed, which will take time.

Lynnm63 · 25/06/2016 11:49

London 66% voted Scotland the same 24% of under 25s voted if 1.2 m of those had bothered to go to the polls you'd have won. Not my fault remain were complacent or unmotivated. Tough tits you lost,

BeyondTellingEveryoneRealFacts · 25/06/2016 11:50

Great post gloria!

(And before anyone shouts godwin, godwins law only applies to irrelevant topics)

GloriaGaynor · 25/06/2016 11:52

I am not going to accept leaving the EU without a fight

And how do you propose to do that without another referendum? Without MPs challenging the results of the first?

BeyondTellingEveryoneRealFacts · 25/06/2016 11:53

By buggering off out of england/wales? Wink

Lynnm63 · 25/06/2016 11:54

Ok Gloria didn't see anyone calling gof that before they lost though. Or chukka umunna not sure if that how you spell it saying 4% wasn't enough at 10pm Thursday when remain thought they'd won on the exit poll. No then it was "have to accept the will of the people" obviously with the caveat only if you agree with me then.
If you wanted list these caveats you should have campaigned for them BEFORE age vote, after is just sour grapes.

BertrandRussell · 25/06/2016 11:57

I'm not signing. The referendum result was narrow but clear. We can't overturn a democratic decision because it was made by uninformed people- the precedent set would be too dangerous.

AuntDotsie · 25/06/2016 11:58

YY Gloria - so many echoes of 1930s Germany here, it's scary.

Also, the referendum isn't actually legally binding, it's advisory. We've seen Ireland repeat referenda. It has happened before and may happen here.

I've signed the petition.

lolo14 · 25/06/2016 11:59

I won't sign it, the decision has been made. I was a remain voter but don't think another referendum is need. If leave won again, would we call for a third referendum?

ExasperatedAlmostAlways · 25/06/2016 12:00

I voted remain..I wont be signing the petition.

shockandawe · 25/06/2016 12:01

No thanks.

Palomb · 25/06/2016 12:04

If this petition made any difference at all no-one with half a brain would ever bother to vote again!

It's democracy for fucks sake.

TheDuchyOfGrandFenwick · 25/06/2016 12:13

I've signed.

Kimononono · 25/06/2016 12:15

This will never happen as it will set a precedent for any further GE ect...

I'm just waiting for a go fund me page to start now ...

KitKat1985 · 25/06/2016 13:31

I'm a remain voter. I'm gutted by the result and what is happening. But it was a free and democratic vote, and we can't decide to change the terms and conditions of the referendum now because we don't like result and demand a second referendum. All the leavers who are regretting their vote or didn't feel they made an informed enough decision when they voted on Thursday, only have themselves to blame, and are likely the reason that the leave camp won. I sense they will have plenty of time to regret their decision over the coming months. I'm just gutted that they are going to drag the whole country down with them.

GloriaGaynor · 25/06/2016 16:56

Democracy has always and will always be flawed.

People make mistakes, government makes mistakes.

The UK has voted by a tiny majority to leave the EU without a clear understanding of the consequences. It is therefore appropriate and fair that there is a second referendum once the terms of exit and our relationship post-exit are known so that the UK people can make its final decision from the position of knowing the consequences of its actions.

It was a mistake to bring a referendum on a issue too complicated for many in the populace to really understand. As the result is a disaster for the UK, it's mature and indeed democratic to admit the mistake and try rectify it.

GloriaGaynor · 25/06/2016 17:00

we can't decide to change the terms and conditions of the referendum now because we don't like result and demand a second referendum

Of course we can. In what other situation would that apply?

In life, a business, a family, an institution, if you make a decision that turns out to have devastating consequences, what do you do? You change your mind, and change your course.

Nailing your colours to the mast of a flawed choice and refusing to reconsider is as naive as it doomed.

TheGoodEnoughWife · 25/06/2016 18:33

In all honesty no one actually knows if it will have 'devastating' consequences as it is too early to say.

AdultingIsNotWhatIExpected · 25/06/2016 18:36

the precedent set would be too dangerous.

This was a referendum! Not a general election

The precident is already there, you can have multiple referendums on issues if public opinion may have changed, which it has, it usually doesn't happen as quickly as this (with all the Bregreters) but that's how referendums work, they are repeated when public mood changes.

a second referendum wouldn't set a new precedent at all!

First people didn't understand what we were voting on

And now people don't understand the concept of a repeat referendum

AnotherOddSock · 25/06/2016 18:39

If there was a second referendum there would be rioting in the streets. It will never happen anyway, just suck it up. There are some of us who believe this is a good thing, and exciting new era. Sure, there'll be teething problems but if you look long term, we can make it on our own and we will be strong.

TheGoodEnoughWife · 25/06/2016 18:40

'First, people didn't understand what we were voting on'
There it is again. The 'leavers' are thick and didn't quite get it. Can we have another go now that they do?

I understood exactly what the vote meant and I still voted leave.
