I was looking at Matthew Rice's Architectural Primer in our local book shop the other day and so many architectural terms sound sexually charged and rude

Buttress
Shaft
Rusticated
Swag
Soffit
Jamb
Ogee
Parapet
Kneeler
Quoin
Reveal
Perpendicular
Openwork

Swedes · 10/07/2009 15:42

I'm not sure I could say gossamer without blushing. Or denier.

UnquietDad · 10/07/2009 15:43

Dado.

UQD you could experiment by knocking on a lady's door and confessing to walking past her house several times a day as you feel very drawn by her rusticated openwork. And you could ask for permission to return in the near future to take a closer look at her hammered buttress. Menitioning her dado might be pushing your luck.

Rhubarb · 10/07/2009 16:10

Just watched the YouTube link posted by UQD. Is it a prerequiste that you have to be thick to get on Family Fortunes then?

ManicMother7777 · 10/07/2009 16:11

Masticate

Rhubarb · 10/07/2009 16:11

UnquietDad · 10/07/2009 16:11

Some of the FF out-takes are hilarious.

"Name something red"
"My jumper"

"Name a dangerous race"
"Arabs"

That last one UQD just made me splutter!

And spot the dodgy jumpers and hairstyles they have on there!

UnquietDad · 10/07/2009 16:14

This is my most successful thread ever.

I'm going to keep away from stuff about schools, god, Center Parcs and books in future and just post rude words.

Can I add not a word but a stage direction that always had my friends and I in stitches when we were studying Anthony and Cleopatra:

'Roman soldiers enter from behind'

We were university students btw, not even school children (which might have been more forgivable )
