Here we are on the fourth instalment of crazy misspellings, misuse of words and all the other topsy-turvy attempts at literacy from the illiterate.
Post your observations. Lady’s the flaw is youre’s…

@Whosthetabbynow

Sorry to be snippy/dense, but the poster who typed "cherrards" obviously assumed that they had spelt the word correctly. They were definitely talking about a game of charades.

You are the OP of this thread which you said was for "crazy misspellings, misuse of words and all the other topsy-turvy attempts at literacy from the illiterate". I posted an example of this. Am I not getting something?

Some of these are very amusing.

I’m on our local Facebook page for our village/town and it saddens me how poor some people’s education must have been. I don’t mean the typical dyslexic or English as an additional language type of mistakes, just a terrible grasp of spelling and grammar. Mainly grammar. I was talking to teenage DD about it and saying how those with EAL often have really good spelling and grammar compared to people with English as their first and only language. I don’t mean dialect either. The local facebook group might not be a good representation of the local population but it’s shocking nonetheless. My P3 and 4 teacher would be turning in her grave. I’m 50 and still remember her tell in a girl to get out her dictionary and look up “alot”. Should that be ‘alot’ or “alot”? Obviously neither for the spelling, but for the punctuation? She didn’t teach us that one and I always worry I’ve got it wrong. Poor girl used to say she couldn’t find it. Mrs. B would then explain that was because it’s not a word. I loved her so much. Best teacher ever. Strict but fair. Tiny class of 9 in a little convent school. Individual desks, fountain pens, silence for work. Perfect for my ASD and ADHD self. English has always been my favourite subject and I still have much to learn.

Yes that’s why I said it’s not a typo it’s an assumption on the part of the person who wrote cherrards. They assumed that what they’d written was correct.

My original comment on your post wasn’t aimed at you. It was to point out that the person assumed charades was ‘cherrards’. Sorry for any misunderstanding x

@Whosthetabbynow

No problem.

mumumental · 06/10/2026 20:23

Not only on Mumsnet, but absolutely everywhere, is this ridiculous phrase “dropped” . No, I don’t want to buy your recently “dropped “ item. Hideous trend.

Agoddessonamountaintop · 06/10/2026 20:38

A poster is currently in the throws of peri-menopause.

I remember that phase, throwing off cardigans and bedclothes.

I’m also not happy with all those data centers being ‘built out’ - why not just ‘built’ or ‘expanded’?
(spelling of ‘Center’ is most likely to be accurate in this context)

mumumental · 06/10/2026 21:38

Totally superfluous “out”.

MagpiePi · 07/10/2026 07:31

The phrase 'watch it back' when talking about replaying or re-watching something really irritates me. Equally, things being 'lit on fire'; they're either lit, alight or on fire.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 07/10/2026 07:59

Someone recently mentioned they would have to have their precious footwear "prized" from them.

Whosthetabbynow · 07/10/2026 10:35

At my last job we sent forms out to people to be completed and returned. The number of staff answering phone queries regarding those forms and telling the person calling to “return it back” made me want to scream.

Thats like the old joke....
Man at railway station: " A return ticket please"
Clerk: " Where to?"
Man: " Well, back here, of course".
