This drives me mad too. I always read it as noon and it makes no sense, then have to read again to realise it's meant to be no one!

This is a verbal rather than written one but I cannot understand why so many people struggle to pronounce ‘sixth’.
It’s not ‘sickth’! It’s six, with a ‘th’ added on! Grr.

It’s one thing to be pedantic about spelling and grammar; I’m all for that. But pronunciation? Really? Accents, dialects and speech impairments make pronunciation harder to criticise, IMO.

Yes, I’m admitting that I find it very difficult to sound every letter in ‘sixth’, and that I also say ‘shtriped’. 😂 (I actually didn’t even realise I do the ‘sh’ thing until I read that post.) I’ve always pronounced those words like that and am not about to change after all these decades! Almost everyone where I live pronounces those words the same as me. But it might just be that I’m lazy 😉

I think it might be called ‘consonant elision’ if anyone is interested in reading about it. Just a perfectly normal feature of speech production.

I agree. I think it’s extremely rude to criticise someone’s pronunciation. I’m from NI and people (not from NI) have asked me to pronounce specific words just so that they can marvel/laugh at how I say it. Be it the pronunciation or the intonation, it’s all hilarious apparently. And they often mimic me. Very badly😅

Accent, dialect and pronunciation are different.
