Bolognaise not bolognese

It’s all ragù to me, but I’ve noticed people starting to put lentils in their “bolognaise”, and it troubles me more than the recent potato lasagne. When did it change? 🫤

I've always called it spaghetti bollocks but I'm extremely childish

@CreativeGreenWhat’s wrong with “The proof is in the pudding”

The saying is 'the proof of the pudding is in the eating'.

Unless you taste the pudding, you won't know if the pudding is a good one.

It means that the true value or quality of something can only be determined by experiencing or trying it. It originated from the act of checking a sausage for spoilage by tasting it, emphasizing that one cannot judge something solely by its appearance or claims. In essence, it suggests that results or outcomes are the best indicators of quality.

@Emptyandsad ,what was funny about your 'gnocchi'?
I can't imagine what they are like as I never fancied trying them.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating. It's not in the pudding.

CrowsInMyGarden · 11/01/2026 21:19

@CaptainMyCaptain of course!

CrowsInMyGarden · 11/01/2026 21:21

I think the principal difference was that, having never even laid eyes on them before, I had no idea how big they should be, and I think I made them much too big - like the size of a ping pong ball. It was decades ago, maybe 35 years, so my memory of exactly what was wrong is hazy.

I wasn't in the least offended - I'm very easy going and happy to laugh at myself. And I was pretty clear that she knew what she was talking about. She wasn't rude just perplexed

Thanks. She said they were nice, so you must have got something right.

I've had arancini (from the supermarket) but didn't like them. I imagine gnocchi would be equally disappointing. Smile

Emptyandsad · 12/01/2026 17:02

I would expect shop-bought arancini to be disappointing, in the same way that all little bites are in a supermarket; samosas, pakoras, spring rolls, vol-au-vents, they're always tasteless - unless perhaps you buy them in a specialist deli.

Gnocchi are more like a staple, and I have had, since my early failure, good ones from supermarkets. They're very filling and rely on a great accompanying sauce (not necessarily an actual sauce but whatever goes with them; it could be just butter and fresh sage). And you wouldn't want them too often.

Pedant5corner · 12/01/2026 17:10

I hadn't thought about eating them with sauce. I don't like floury potatoes or the taste of flour.

Little bites are disappointing, I agree.
I bought these (Emmental & Extra Mature Cheddar Potato Frittata Bites | Higgidy) when they had a yellow sticker and wasn't hopeful but they were good.
