Bolognaise not bolognese

It’s all ragù to me, but I’ve noticed people starting to put lentils in their “bolognaise”, and it troubles me more than the recent potato lasagne. When did it change? 🫤

I add lentils! Makes the dish go further, higher protein and fibre content. I'm not serving it to a Michelin star chef so don't really give a wotsit

BambinaCucina · 08/01/2026 14:29

I've never seen it written anything other than "bolognese".

People add lentils to mince to stretch it out, no it's no longer authentic ragù. But it's all about the budget.

Also spag bol/sketty bol/spag bowl and every other variation makes me cringe inside.

Waitingfordoggo · 08/01/2026 14:40

It’s interesting that several posters have commented on a different pronunciation of ‘bolognaise’ and ‘bolognese’. I thought we were just talking about a spelling difference. Would people pronounce those differently? If so, how? (I would pronounce both the same way).

SteelyEyed · 08/01/2026 14:54

Nowt wrong with calling it sketty bol when trying to appeal to picky children's palates... I think cutesy names are allowed in these circumstances. Also think it might be an Australianism, we shorten everything (viz chocky biccies)

If you don't even put meat in, it's not spaghetti bolognese anymore though, is it? So you don't need to worry about spelling and pronunciation.

I have come across spaghetti polonaise on a restaurant menu.

What is the polonaise (not polacco?) concoction? Perhaps now (in)famous strawberry pasta?

We used to make polonaise topping in school cookery classes. It was a finely chopped boiled egg and breadcrumb topping. If I remember rightly we would melt butter, add the eggs and breadcrumbs and cook for a couple of minutes. Then sprinkle over things. Could it be that?

It’s bolognese and lasagne, because they’re Italian. People don’t write bolognaise because it’s French, they write it because it rhymes with mayonnaise.

It doesn't rhyme with mayonnaise.
It's bolonyeh-seh. (ish)

Spag bog makes me think of food poisoning.

I know. I speak French and know lots of Italian. I’m talking about the way English people say it; they assume it rhymes with mayonnaise and is spelt the same way. I only call it boloñe-se when I’m in Italy, though, because I’m not Italian.

Pedant5corner · 08/01/2026 17:29

I can only go by what you had posted at the time, @ProfessorRizz . I can't mind read.

I mentioned on another thread yesterday the abomination that is "panini's", so I'll leave that thought here as well Envy

How mad would sandwiches’s be? I’ve got myself in a knot now with my possessive plurals!

Putneydad7 · 08/01/2026 18:36

I had a mate who once broke up with his South African girlfriend because it really annoyed him when she said "pitza" for pizza.
So these things are clearly important or my mate is very shallow, obvs.

Sandwiches’s and panini's are as bad as each other.

It doesn't matter how people say it or spell it we all know what they mean.

Cakeandcardio · 08/01/2026 18:50

I hope you don't put garlic in

What is potato lasagne?

Probably she means moussaka? But it is not the same of lasagne and was never called lasagne.

Coffeeismyfriend1 · 08/01/2026 19:02

I’m guessing to bulk it out since the price of meat shot up! You can bulk it out with lentils and make it stretch to two meals instead of one!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 08/01/2026 19:04

I make minced beef tomato garlic stuff with spaghetti often. Sometimes I add lentils to it because they're indistinguishable from beef if you're a small child, they're good for you, and they're cheap. But I know it's not bolognese.

I have once made proper bolognese from the official recipe and it was delicious but took for bloody ever!

PipeOfPringles · 08/01/2026 19:04

Beekman · 07/01/2026 23:46

I just thought it was people spelling “Bolognese” wrongly. Usually the “naice ham” brigade.

"Naice ham" is an in-joke, not a spelling error, surely.

If you add aubergines to the potato lasagne, you make it moussaka 😀

That sounds like it should be an inspirational quote Grin

It could have been worse: she could have been a Vengaboy.

What is potato lasagne?

Someone (in another thread) decided to make a lasagna and forgot the lasagne. So they made it with potatoes. And their DH said “mmm love Shepherds pie”…. Which would have been fine if they hadn’t also been planning to put POTATOES IN THEIR LASAGNA!!! Dirty bastards. 🤦🏻‍♀️🙈

SpringIsComingSoonFolks · 08/01/2026 19:43

Bubblyaero · 08/01/2026 07:25

Ha! Yeah, I’m not the one putting the lentils in. Should have quoted that differently. Variation of original dish aside, it’s the written name that intrigues me.

If we are going to be pedantic, the authentic name is ragù, with that accent, and would be more likely to be tagliatelle, depending on region. Is it officially “spag bol” now? I heard someone calling it “Sketty bol” the other day, which is quite cute!

Puttin some lentils in yer sketty bol, cause of the cozzy lives are ya love?

🙈🙈🙈
